CHESS - Knight & Valkyries
Feb 3rd, 2010 at 5:16pm

I have always like the idea of the government run task forces (Shield, Checkmate, ect.) and have always wanted to include a representative of CHESS in my games. I can not actually find any published character sheets or even pictures of what the power armor looks like. Any help or suggestions?

There are counters of their cycles and Knight armor in a couple of modules, I'll have to dig them out to see exactly which ones they're in though.

Yeah, there's a ton of markers for Knights and Valkyries in numerous adventure supplements. They look the same; the Knights wear light blue and the Valkyries pink (or dark pink, depending on which module).  Rooks (and Doves, their counterparts) were just James Bond-type agents, and the only major characters they had were Homer Grimsby (the King) and Alexandria Huntington (the Queen); Dawn of the Devil had stuff on them (their offices and such), but I'm pretty sure they never statted them out.

I believe the ones that had them (I'm going from memory here) include Most Wanted Volume 1, The Secret in the Swamp, and Dawn of the Devil, plus probably a few more.

If anybody saw "Absolute Justice" (the 2 hour Smallville mini-movie) last night, then you saw that they introduced Checkmate to the series as a major behind-the-scenes player.

I really liked Checkmate, back in the day, and wish DC had left it alone. I'm not digging the new UN mandate thing they currently have going on.

Thanks Majestic and dsumner.
I found a counter for both Knights and Valkyries. It's only a head and shoulders pic, but assuming the rest of the armor follows suit, I'm going with something like this:

I saw the episode, is the comic DC or Marvel... I don't guess it really matters at this point, as has been said here, the chess theme has been used many times.

Not sure what you mean by "the comic" in this case, Hammer.  Checkmate is (apparently) a DC comics organization.  I'm not that familiar with DC myself, but I know Marvel pretty well, and they showed up in Smallville, which means DC.

There have been two separate Checkmate comics. In the first run Checkmate was a US government organization, similar to the SHIELD. The second run had them operating under a UN mandate. I preferred the first run.

Yep, that's what I was asking, and what I thought as well.

Thanks!

I just read this now and see where the whole CHECKMATE idea was already used. It was right in front of me the whole time. Lovely......
