Shiver Me Timbers!

Act One:  The Cat's in the Caravel

In the year of our lord, 1650, Ethan Cavanaugh, Adrian Voss, Katarina, and Alfredo De Corlone found them selves press ganged into the crew of Jean Petite, the French Privateer.   Working from Jamaica, Petite obtained a letter of Marque (so he claimed) from the French Crown and roamed the Spanish Main in search of Spanish Gold.

They sailed on the sloop; Le Oyster into the Atlantic.   One night while using the ship’s sexton, Katarina was accosted by one of the French crewmen, Dupree.   Dupree grabbed her wrist causing her to almost drop the valuable navigational instrument.  Voss spotted this, and intervened.  With two swords drawn against him, Dupree backed down.   The following morning, the ship’s boson gave Dupree nine lashes.

A week later, near the Bahamas, a Spanish Galleon was seen smoking in the distance.   They set sail for plunder.    The main mast of the Spanish ship was damaged and  the ship’s hull looked damaged.   They let loose with their small cannons, and then boarded the ship.   The Spanish fought back, but later surrendered to Jean Petite.    Petite took their gold, but left their men and ship alone due to them finding out that most of their crew had died from the plauge!

They set sail towards the mainland to divvy the plunder when they saw they were now being chased.  At first they thought it was more Spanish, but they soon realized it was much worse.  It was the Reaver, the hated ship of the dreaded  buccaneer, Captain Darque.

Petite said that he had escaped Darques’ clutches once before.   He said that Darque captures anyone he can, and they are never seen again. And that his  crew is loyal to the last man.   He would not stop pursuing them.   Petite, the hardest man they had ever seen, showed fear in his eyes.

They rammed the Reaver, and Cavanaugh jumped unto its deck, only to find himself entangled in a slaver’s net.    Alfredo and Katarina both hacked their way across the Reaver’s deck, taking  many of  the two man netting teams.   Adrian leapt aboard keeping an eye on the battle.    He and Ethan both saw Dupree, sneaking up on Katarina, trying to stab her in the back.   Ethan killed Dupree before he could harm the Black Cat.

Alfredo proved to be a skilled swordsman, dispatching many enemy swordsmen, while Jean Petite proved fearless and deadly.   Soon muskets fired hitting many of the Oyster’s men, including their captain.  Captain Darque jumped down, picking up Jean Petite, and slamming him to the deck.    This caused a wave of desperation among Petite’s men.

Katarina called out Captain Darque.   The crews of both ships came to a halt to see how this would play out.    Captain  Darque asked for terms.   She conferred with Adrian Voss and they said, “ If I win, I get your ship,  if you win, you get our ship”   He laughed and said he had their ship already.  He said that if he wins Petite’s crew become slaves, and  Katarina services his crew as the ship’s whore.   To everyone’s surprise, she agreed.

Darque removed his cloak and struck out with lighting speed.   Katarina parried and struck back three times.  She slashed Darque’s face, shoulder and throat, killing Captain Darque.  His ferret slinked away.

Adrian called for hails to the new captain.  Ethan seconded this and together they got the crews cheering.     This day was the birth of the newest pirate captain,  El Gata Negra, the Black Cat.

They inventoried the ship, finding 27 emaciated people in chains below deck along with chests of  Spanish gold.   Adrian and Ethan went to the captain’s quarters to get the key to unchain the poor wretches, and both screamed when they saw what horrors were in that evil captain’s chambers.    They saw a pentagram painted on the floor, and a tapestry with star charts hanging over the ceiling.  Skulls were littered on the shelves and lastly, on the closed shutters over the windows, was an eviscerated torso.    They called for crewmen to clean out the room.  Darque’s boson refused,  whereupon Ethan Cavanaugh ran him trough with his trusty Spanish long sword.  The next person asked to clean out the room did not object.

The imprisoned were freed.   They were fed, given water.   Katarina  opened Darque’s private locker and found books and more gold.   The books were written in Latin.  One of  freed prisoners was Spanish priest, and he refused to read those damned books.  All he did was say their titles, and blessed himself profusely.  One was the Cult De Ghouls, another the dreaded Necronomicon, the last,  Captain Darque's journal.

Jean Petite recovered and was helped aboard the Reaver by Alfredo.   Captain Petite, and Captain Katarina made an accord.   Petite would now sail under the standard of a Black Cat, and he would kick back 10% of his booty to the Chat Noir.     Katarina envisioned a new fleet all sailing under her standard.

They interviewed the crew and the freed prisoners.  Most had soldiering skills.   The former first mate of Captain Darque was a mestizo named Quincy, short for Quinctlotlqi.  He said he was good for the ship, as he could talk to the natives that they might encounter.  He also said that Captain Darque would bring his prisoner’s to a certain spot to give to a tribe of savages.

The second night that Katarina slept in her new cabin, she was awoken by the ferret that fled earlier.  It spoke  to her in fluent Spanish.  It said that the captain of the Reaver was to deliver 40 souls a year.  She said that the captain was dead.   The ferret replied, " You are captain now."

The Black Cat did not get much sleep after that.

The crew is working out well, and Captain Katarina proves to be a formidible leader.   For six months the crew of the Reader prowled the Spanish Main plundering and looting.
The small ferret, Gehenna, whispers that the goddess is growing angry and demands her tribute.   Katarina ignores this, as per usual.   A few days later, a thick fog rolls in and under the cover of the mist, a Dutch Sloop is spotted.  At first they decide to leave the Dutch ship alone, as to respect Adrian Voss as he is a Dutchman.  The ship seems to pursue them.   They decide to engage the ship and they are fired upon.   Cavanaugh, their Irish gunner, orders the crew to fire upon the sloop.   For a few hours cannon fire is exchanged back and forth with minimal damage on either side.   The sloop crashes in and the crew of the Reaver sees that this is a not a ghost ship, but a something far worse, it’s a ship crewed by the dead.
Bearing the standard of William of Orange (AKA William the Silent) Voss guess this ship’s crew have been dead for over 70 years!    Ethan Cavanaugh is the first to jump aboard and engage the undead crew.
Katarina orders some oils to be brought up and the crew prepares some makeshift incendiary weapons.  Ethan sees that nothing short of decapitation harms these hellish seamen.  He comes back aboard the Reaver and they all act as one to push the ladders that the undead sailors are using to try to come to their ship back.

The flaming oil proves to work as the Dutch Ghost Ship is set ablaze and the attack is halted.   Quincy, the Mayan Spanish Indian of the crew says that the Goddess is angry.

Katarina decides to port in Petite Grove for some supplies, crewmen and to hire a surgeon.   Then they will make sail for the Yucatan and try bargain with the devil.

They find harbor and make way for the taverns, after all, they are pirates.    A bar fights breaks out and Ethan proves to be a real bastard of a fighter on land as he is on the sea.  Two men are taken prisoner by the resident Italian and Giles, a creepy Frenchman, is hired as a surgeon.   Giles bears watching as every third night he displays signs of possession.  He is, however, a skilled surgeon when he is not bling stinking drunk.  Every third night he doesn’t blink, and speaks in an archaic manner.
The group is then met by a group of aristocrats.  They want to purchase the captured books of the previous captain.   They want the copies of the Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register, the Greek copy of the Necronomicon, along with the Journals of Captain Darque, for their employer, the Black Marquis.   They say they will talk about it, and set sail.   Giles says that the Marquis is a feared man in France and has learned many demonic things during the Crusades.   Many say that he is the same man who fought under Richard the Lionhearted, and that he is only pretending to be the great ancestor of that man.  They fear he has learned sorceries that has preserved his life.

During this time Adrian Voss is writing a purposely flawed copy of the Cult De Ghouls in French.

They sail to the Yucatan, following a map made by Captain Darque.  They find the pyramid Xupki uses for her worship.  The goddess emerges, all beautiful, and all terrible.   She flirts with them all and drinks the blood offered by the slaughter of the two captured men.   She says she still wants her 40 souls and says that they only have 6 more months to obtain them.

They leave, thinking this expedition was a waste.
