Aura Perception:  Pr=0  constantly active  as any sense.  Can see a being’s aura.  +4 to hit them x4 for detections. With an action, can look deeper into the aura.  Save 1d20.  The number of success  above the intelligence of the user gleans more information.
        1-3  no more information

4-6 can see things like true form, or if they are Metahuman or magical.

7-9       can see if under mental attacks/mind controlled/ beings approximate level

10-12 what race the being is,  it won’t give you’re their name but you will recognize the aura’s racial traits, ei  dwarven,  human,  alien, etc..

Hey, thanks for caring. You can actually read quite a bit under the following titles.

The Way
The Horror of Yig
Black Tulips and Black magic
The Omphalos of the World
Loasian Death Cult

John did most of the writing but it's some story lines of The Oni and The Dreaded Spartan based off the Adventures John ran us through.

See also The Black Grail

Jimmy,
Can you write out the rules for his transformation die roll?   I have an idea for something but I want to know exactly what happens when you roll that die.

Oni Transformation

Subtract the difference between character charisma and 20. In this case the modifier would be -7 based off 13 charisma. Subtract 7 from charisma with a result of 6. Yoshi needs to roll a 6 or below when transforming in order to retain his personality. Anything above 6 results in "The Oni" personality being dominant. Same rules apply to turn back.

My main character in Johns' campaign. I tend to write the stories after John posts adventure follow ups. I'll put them in from both sides of the characters point of view under The Oni and The Way.

And of course I know No Name really exists. I see him all the time.........

He was pretty tough but not really a great hero. He was a Schizophrenic young Japanese man who was also quite mad in other ways. As soon as his Powers manifested he was already suffering from the madness.

He was delusional and believed he was actually taking his power from a Mythical Japanese Devil. In reality he was simply manifesting his own powers and changing his personality at the same time without realizing it.

The posts above have gotten mixed up when they were combined but though they seem to be from two different individuals they were actually coming from the same sick mind.

At least I think that's it. We'll never really know......

The scent from the Cherry Blossom tree had almost seemed a distraction after the summer storm.

Takeda Yoshi knelt and stared at the water forming on the end of a blossom some five feet from the ground. He had been in Seiza for quite some time now but it no longer mattered, he was born to endure. He had endured the training of his grandfather in "The Way.". He endured the the years he had spent in the Gaijin schools that his father had demanded he attend in order to learn the secrets of their industries.

His Grandfather,Takeda Shingen, had shown him the beginnings of "The Way." So many others had taken partial forms of The Way and given them their own names in arrogance but the true Way was the beginning of all and could not be altered. The Sword,Bow,Staff and others were taught and perfected but most important were the Body,Mind and Spirit, those who were not fully committed to them would never understand.

Yoshis' senses were focused on the water droplet that was beginning to grow as he waited for the moment. He would strike the straw target set before him at the very moment the droplet fell. If it touched the ground before he struck Yoshi knew the archer in the doorway some thirty feet to his rear left would let loose an arrow piercing his back and then his heart. This is of course as it should be, often enough he had been that archer. Should Yoshi become too anxious and strike the target before the drop began to fall then he would instead be dead by his own hand. No matter, he would continue on in another turn of the wheel in another life.

This life however had a purpose and meaning. He had been given direction, a true goal to set his sights on and a way to gain Honor for his family and clan.

  The GrassCutter.

He would train his Body and Mind to levels that were thought to be unattainable.Already his Senses were attuned to the water drop but his Mind could be contemplating other things. His body would react before his mind could even command it to. When the time came he would strike true whether it be Sword, arm or hand. It made no difference as they were all simply extensions of his Ki.

  One Draw, One Strike......One Kill.

With no where else to go after the destruction of Toyko, you decide that its best to suck it up and ask your grandfather for help.   Moving to the extreme north of the island of Hokkaido was not easy.   Your years of living in New York and Tokyo have made you accostumed to the easy life.  Grandfather's farm is cold.   And you just found out, much to your dismay, that he has no electricity.    Wonderful...

Oh it gets better.  Grandfather expects you to kill your own dinner.

After a year on the farm,  your soft belly melts into hard muscle.   Working all day by hot sun and reading all night by candle transforms the meek accountant into a rough outdoorsman.   Grandfather tells you about the old ways.   About the 12  Hidden Cities: about  Bushido:  and about  the way of Kodo.   Soon he will take you further north to meet his friends.   He thinks you are ready to meet the Secret Shogun.

Grandfather inspects your clothes and gives you three cucumbers.  He tells you to not stare at Mr Waterman.   "Employ an economy of verbage," he tells you.   "It is of the utmost importance that you do not offend Mr Waterman."
When you see this diminutive creature, you understand.
Mr Waterman is a four foot tall,  warty, briny covered man.  He is to take you into the mountains to begin your new life.   You give him the three cucumbers each time you need to rest.  It seems to please your guide.   He walks you to  the foot of the castle, and he leaves.  "Time to get back to the sea," is all he says.    You are greeted at the gate by Kiko. She is different. Her eyes are blue and catlike.  You learn she goes by the name of 'Tiger's Beautiful Daughter.  She is the only one who is nice to you.   Tashi is your taskmaster.  He is cruel and petty.   After months of menial chores, he tells you that you will finally meet the Shogun.   You are not to react to his appearance.   When the door opens up, you see the hideous, boil covered flesh that is pulled over the Shogun's face like rotton leather.  You vomit.  It was not the correct thing to do.  You are locked in a closet for four months.  You are let out to do chores and to be punished.   For some reason, the Shogun likes that you studied in America.   You think that that is the only reason you are still alive.   One day Kiko gives you a book and a candle.  You open to a page she dogeared and begin to read.
Watermen are mythical creatures that live in the sea.  They are said to be able to summon lightning, and communicate with sea life.   They are short, strong,  ugly creatures.  They are intelligent and crave cucumbers.
Could this be what escorted you to the castle?
One night while reading you are startled by a red faced demon.  He says he is your oni and soon you must drink from the cup.
You are permitted to see a contest of skill.    Wolfbrother has come all the way from Shangra La to fight a Kodo champion.  Tiger's Beautiful Daughter is chosen to represent the Dojo.   The contest lasts an hour.   At the end Wolfbrother asks Tiger's Beautiful Daughter to accompany him back to Shangra La.  The Shogun is pleased.   Your only friend leaves without saying goodbye.

After 8 months, you are brought up to the upper rooms.  There you partake of the Tea Ceremony with the Secret Shogun.  Afterward, you are directed to a back room.  In this room is  shelf.  The shelf contains  a set of Samurai Swords,   tea cups,  a photograph of Johnny Carson*,  A Winchester Rifle,  a folded leopard print cloth, and a smelly black cup.

The Shogun tells you its time to drink from the cup.    He pours some sake into it.   The sake sours instantly.   It tastes even worse than it smells.   You black out.

*  The photograph is autographed.  It reads; "  Keep Rambling, Johnny,  Love Johnny

After three days you awake.   You feel different.     You begin  training in the way of Bushido.    After a month,  you again meet with the Shogun.  He tells you that you will be locked in a room until you change.   If you have not changed after drinking from the cup, then you are of no use to him.   And if you are of no use, you will die.
It takes nine our of meditation before you change.   You become evil.  You become a devil.   You become  Oni.

You shatter the walls of the room with your mind.   You find yourself under attack by three men with swords.   The Shogun yells at you.   In a southern drawl he says, " OK  Rambler, start rambling."

You are stabbed in the back.   You feebly try to parry the next blow.  You realize you are in danger.  You dance around their blades while counter attacking.   It takes you a few seconds to realize you are faster and stronger now.  Something whispers in your ear, telling you when to move before their swords can hit you.    You realize that you are slowly bleeding to death from the sword strike.   You break on of their jaws with a strike from your mind.    The other two are dispatched.   The Shogun says you are not ready yet.  You need more training.    He tosses you something and leaves.    It is a Twinkie.   You are confused.

You are refused medical treatment.     You are about to panic.   The oni you saw in the dark tells you to give him a bit of your soul.   You know that you will die if you do not, so you give in.    You are healed.     All it cost was a fraction of your spirit.

The Shogun tells you that you have been selected to represent the Dojo in a Challenge.   Mother of Nine Spiders has come from Shamba La.  You must defeat her to win honor for the Kodo Cult.   If you win,  the Shogun wishes you to go to Island Zero.

.... After your last training session, you were told you would have to show your skills to the agents from Shamballa.   You do battle with Mother of Nine Spiders.   The battle is brief.  You show vast promise.   The Shogun is happy with your progress.  Gone is the flabby child who was educated in America.   He invites you to his room for tea.  A real oni battles you.  He is insulted that you chose his name.   Again, the battle is brief.   You earned the right to keep the name.  However,  the Nameless One says that one day he will fight you again for his name and your life.
The agents come and you go to the city.  The put you on a plane to Kathmandu.    While flying, you watch the news events about the King of All Tears.   You see Mr Clean battle the alien with an army of superbeings.  It is awe inspiring.
Taken to a house on Freak Street,  you simply wait.    After a few days the Agents from Shamballa take you into the mountains.   The show you the secret entrance to the Hidden City.    You are led the the spire of Gold, and inside you see more Agents.   They tell you drink some tea.   The Oni rebels and tosses the tea into your host's face.   They are insulted and you attack.   Why the Oni did this is unknown.  Perhaps he sensed something.   The four agents reveal themselves to be horrid creatures.    They try to destroy your mind.   You must summon strength from the Land of Shadows in order to stay alive.  A piece of your personality is lost.   You defeat these aliens and leave the house.   You realise you were tricked.   You are not in Shamballa, nor Nepal, nor even Asia.   You are in a small Massachusetts town called Innsmouth.  How did they trick you?   These horrid creatures have vast mental powers.    As you try to find safety,  a voice calls you from the fireplace.  Its the Nameless One.  He saves you, telling you that only HE has the right to kill you.   He brings you to a small house in Utah.   A skinny, sallow man in his underwear wakes as you emerge from his closet.   He grabs your hand.   You notice needle marks on his arm.    He tells you that he is a friend.  He tells you you are safe.

The dreams began to come more frequently now. Each night he was visited by his Demon was like a whole new found experience in sorrow. His Demon would tell him tales of pain and human suffering that were happening somewhere else at that same moment in time.It was impossible to tell if the stories were true or not but somehow deep in the depths of His tortured soul Yoshi knew they were all true.

Each night the Demon demanded to be set free to wreak havoc upon the world but Yoshi knew that to do so was to give away another piece of himself. He knew someday there may be nothing left of his soul but such was the lot he had drawn in this liife

Yoshi began to delve into books of Mysticism in an attempt to draw more power from the beast without having to give away more of himself in the process. He knew there must be a way but most of his time was spent in training and performing "Tasks" for his new found benefactors. He knew today would be a day for the spawn to be released and he prayed to his ancestors that he would be able to draw on the Demons power and yet still keep control.

Mysticism."To become one with the Godhead." How painfully true this was for him, unfortunately for Yoshi he was becoming one with the Demon instead...

It was time for Yoshi to return home.

He had been working as a Ronin for the last several months with the American government agency. The leader of their Covert division "The Black King" had assigned Yoshi to return to Nippon and recover The Black Grail. The idea was for Yoshi to play the part of the returning Prodigal Son and to re-insinuate himself back into the Kodo Cult. While he was there his primary objective would be to recover the Grail and return it to "The Black King."

It would have been a good plan had Yoshi any intention of returning that Evil Cup to anyone other than it's maker in Hell.

Yoshi would return to Nippon and he would return to The Kodo Cult but it would not be as the same naive child as when he left. He would return to claim what he now realized was his all along, His Leagacy, to be Daimyo of the Cult. The Kodo had been twisted over the years and needed to be returned to the true Way.

Yoshi knew who and what The Secret Shogun was. He also knew had had no real chance of defeating him in combat so the next best thing to do would be to make himself the Heir Apparent to the Cult. The Cult was a powerful force that could be used to combat the Horrors being created by the Cult of Yig and the other Horrors Yoshi had come in contact with at Innsmouth.

One day their would be no more Cult. It would only be known as The Kodo Clan. A force powerful enough to bring order back to His beloved Home.

Only one thing stood between Yoshi and his Dream and that was Death, or possibly something worse.
________________________________________

The Oni absolutley adored His slaves new plan. To take over the Kodo Cult this early was more than He could have imagined! He did not like the timeline so much but a little push here or there could alter Yoshi's thinking without him even realizing it. The Oni was nearly salivating with the thought of how much destruction could be caused once he was in control of the Kodo Cult. He would let His slave think what he was doing was for the good of his people. Even if the little Human failed in his effort The Oni would get what he had bargained for anyway. If by some miracle the little thing actually succeeded The Oni would appear greater in His Masters eyes.

   The true Nameless One.

Yoshi's return to Nippon had not been exactly what he had expected. He had been attacjed twice in one day. Once from a misguided agent of The Kodo Cult and once from a recent foe who seemed to be able to take powers based off his environment. The confrontations were of little consequence as they were merely tools to hone his skills in The Way.

Yoshi's concerns were for his people and his homeland. He had no desire to see battles between beings of power cause un necessary damage to either one.

At least he had been re united with Grandfather and been able to convince him that the Gaijin known as The Spartan was not an enemy. Convincing him was simple. His word of Honor was enough for that as well as it was know The Spartan was the last wielder of The Grass Cutter. Convincing Grandfather of his usefulness was another mater entirely. Had The Spartan failed in his challenge against the two agents of The Kodo he would be dead. Had he failed to battle them Honorably Grandfather would have ordered Yoshi to kill him.

The Onis' rage could not be contained. This was the first time that his little human had summoned a portion of The Onis' power but this time The Oni was unable to insinuate any of his own ID into the creature! It was becoming increasingly difficult of late for The Oni to force his persona into the mind of his slave.

Soon the little being would become careless and that would be when The Oni would make him and those around him regret his arrogance. The little fool did not even realize how he was doing it. All The Oni needed was for the Human to lose control  of either his emotions or his mind for a moment.

Based off what he had seen of this beings inner self He would not have to wait much longer.

Yoshi was very suprised he had not been brought directly to The Secret Shogun upon his return. Instead he was set back to his original tasks and training regiment from when he had first began as a member of The Kodo. It had taken nearly a month before the summons had come from his Master. Suprisingly it was a summons to a tea ceremony. He was called to it by his grandfather and instructed to bring his American associate, The Spartan. The Shogun seemed more interested in The Spartan than he did with Yoshi.

This gave Yoshi the opportunity to study his Master more carefully. He knew his true backround but it didn't matter. Yoshi had sworn his allegiance to his Shogun and that was enough. The fact that his Master was completely insane held very little weight with him but he could see that it was slowly beginning to worry Grandfather. What would come out of that realization Yoshi did not know but it certainly made him wonder.

The question really was simple. Where did his Honor truly lie? Was it to The Secret Shogun or was it to the Kodo? Could it somehow be to both when it seemed they were not neccessarily on the same path? One thing was for certain, either path was going to be deadly.

Oh, what absolute rapture it had been!! The Oni's latest trek to the Human realm had been such a delicious combination of pain and warfare. He knew that his little human slave could not keep his emotions under control always and this latest summoning had proven it. The Oni was also overjoyed to see the other human known as Spartan both suffer and return an extraordianry amount of pain himself. This one would certainly bear some watching as he was becoming very useful to The Oni. His game with the thing known as Yoshi was also quite enjoyable. He had allowed his creature to access a little more of his power and by doing so The Oni let his slave think he had done it on his own. What a foolish, arrogant little human!! No matter, it all worked into his overall plan from the beginning. Keep the being alive since he needed a host on this plane of existence anyway and continue to feed it a little power at a time until the addiction was complete.

The humans were so predictable. Two of them however had caused The Oni some minor concern. He had not been prepared when the little humans supposed " Master" had forced The Oni to release control of his slave. The Oni could still see all that was happening through his creatures eyes but the insult to him was almost unbearable. His plans for this disgusting Gaijin " Shogun" would have to change. He was planning on using him for a while but it may be best to just eliminate him entirely. For the meantime The Oni would simply release some of his awesome will into his slave in order to protect this shell better next time. He would not be taken by suprise again by that filth.

The one known as Grandfather was a much more difficult puzzle to solve. He could be  more useful than originally anticipated. His power was yet to be determined but his influence was obviously strong with both his slave and with the other humans.

Takeda Yoshi had nearly accomplished all that he had set out to do during his return to Nippon. The Secret Shogun had been removed from power over the Kodo and been replaced with Takeda Shingen, his Grandfather. The Vile Black Grail had been destroyed forever and would no longer be twisting his people into distorted forms of their original selves. With all that being said the Kodo was now both more and less then what it had been. Gone were the MetaHumans who were once a part of the Kodo but also gone were their powers and skills. It seemed a fair price to pay.`

Now would be the dawning of a new era for the Kodo. They would become a new force for the people of Nippon and in turn a force for the world. It would take time to recruit and train new warriors and Yoshi did not know just how much time he had left. The Horror known as Yig was becoming more powerful and he had heard stories from some of the CHESS agents that another location was found with his worshippers. Also the threat of the Mind Flayers was still out there as well as countless other threats.

It seemed to Yoshi that all he had left to do here was to claim The GrassCutter and that would be another step in returning his land and his people back to their old Glory. As he thought upon it however he came to realize that it was not him that The GrassCutter had appeared to glow for. Of course he could see it because he was in the room and had his special " Sight " but he was not alone in the room.

What had the Waterman said? You must follow the ways of  Bushido before you could even hope to weild the sword. Part of Bushido included a certain amount of Honor and Yoshi knew that his Honor was forever tainted by making the pact with his Oni. No The GrassCutter had not shown it's true presence becuase of him. The weapon of Nippons Glory had shown itself to another who truly followed the Way, one who had been respnsible for trying to teach these ways to Yoshi.

Takeda Shingen, Grandfather, The New Leader of The Kodo Clan and soon to be Shogun of Nippon...

The Oni was formulating a new plan. Gone was that wretched creature known as The Secret Shogun and in his stead was placed the other Human known as Grandfather. This last summoning was far too tame for The Oni as all he was able to enjoy was a few moments of pain from that creature Wolf Brother. It had taken a very small amount of The Oni's power to vanquish him and The Oni preferred these things to last a little longer. At least he was able to enjoy so much of the Death and pain going on all around him but it was so much lessened since he had not directly caused it.

Once again the being known as Spartan was continuing to show incredible amounts of power. As long as he continued to trust in The Oni's little slave then he could continue to be very useful. The Oni had hoped that arrogance would have caused his creature to name himself as master of The Kodo but perhaps it was wise to let the older one spend time and establish a more powerful group first. He could always eliminate him later and take over. The Oni had wondered if possibly some of his vast intelligence had slipped into his slave during one of their transformations but that could not be possible. It appeared that it was however possible that these dumb beasts known as Humans could on occassion have a useful thought.

One thing had caused The Oni some ire however. He could not locate that other one of his kind who called himself No Name. He would search his own realm and torture othe lesser Oni for information but all to no avail. It was as if he did not exist. This was of course impossible since he had seen the creature himself in the Human realm and even caused him pain. Perhaps he truly was a Demon instead and that was why he could not locate him. No matter, it was almost time for stage two of his plans and it was all working out rather well.

In perhaps less than a decade He would be named Shogun of a realm that was not his own and His Master would rule that entire world. Soon enough, what was time really when you were an immortal....

Oh Gods!!! How could he have been so foolish and arrogant.

Yoshi truly thought that by destroying the Black Grail he was simply destroying another tool of Evil in the World. He never thought about his own redemption.

The obscure verse in an old tome he had just read may not have meant anything but it also may have been his only salvation. What if there really was a way to reverse this change and The Black Grail had been the key to it all along.Had he locked in his own Eternal Damnation without even considering any other options?

In the past he had thought he was forever doomed, now he knew it for a fact.

It had been so simple to arrange for that Old text to make it's way into his slaves set of books. There were times that such little things could cause such great harm.

Ahh, The Oni would truly savor this pain for a very, very long time.....

Takeda Yoshi was dying. It wasn't that he was afraid of Death, that was only part of the cycle of life. He was afraid becuase of the deal that he had made in order to make himself a powerful weapon for The Kodo had cost him his very soul. Now it was time to pay for his bargain. At least he had accomplished his task and set Grandfather back to his position as Leader of The Kodo Clan. All that being said it was time to pay.

As his perception of this reality was beginning to fade he expected to re-awake in some dreaded burning plane of existence where he would be punished again and again for eternity but that was not happenning.

All he could see was blackness and he could not keep his thoughts together. No it was something else entirely, it wasn't blackness. It was nothingness and he was beginning to fade.

Oh Gods No!!!  Not this!! Please, Please, Please, Not Like This!!!!  I never knew it would be like  this!!! pleeaassee..........

The Oni's little creature had failed him. He had given this human the ability to draw on The Oni's awesome power but he a was foolish and did not take advantage of that quickly enough. The Oni's Master would be very cross with him and would cause him such levels of pain that mere mortals could not even contemplate but he would endure it as he had in the past. His Master however was controlled with his punishment and he would not normally obliterate an Oni Lord such as himself as he was still a powerful tool for his Master to use. Not normally but it had happened before to his kin.

His summoning would come soon enough and there was no way he could avoid it.

What was it the Humans said? " If you wanted something done right, you just had to do it yourself...."

OK. So I finally put this in order, at least the story portions from beginning to end. The Oni was the first PC I made after a 20 year layoff. These posts were initially in the old Forum and each was on a different thread. One was called The Way and the other The Oni. After each adventure I would post two separate quick stories. One from Takeda Yoshi's perspective and the other from The Oni. Think of it as seeing the story from both Bruce Banners and The Hulks side of things for lack of a better comparison. In this case however as I played the character all that time I really thought it was two separate beings. The original thought was that Takeda Yoshi could draw power from "The Oni" and the Oni would take over for that time. I guess a better comparison would be Jason Blood and Etrigan instead of Bruce and The Hulk. Since part of his weakness was that Yoshi would have to roll to Banish The Oni back to his plane I told The Oni stories like The Oni was really the one in control.

Well after he died John finally told me that there was no Oni. Yoshi was Mad from the beginning and I guess when he drank from The Black Grail it just kicked in The Metapsychosis so Yoshi was really just fighting his own madness and split personality the whole time.

Kudos to John as this was a Great time for me.

Each of the story posts above are the two sides of the story. The top being from Yoshi and the bottom being from The Oni.

That's a great, ongoing arc, and very awesome that John held off for so long, not revealing it until the end.  Cool
