Parrying and Blocking.

I have been thinking of making a parrying rule for years.  The problem is,  nothing I can come up with works.  Does anyone have a successful blocking or parrying rule?

I've got Jeff Dee's article parrying and shields, and my own house rules, if you want to see them.

Please post those optional rules. They're pretty easy to use. I have the article at home too.

I've got to see if I can shrink the page, as it says the attachment is to large.

For some reason I can't post the PDF, it keeps telling me the file is to large. I'll see what I can work out tonight.

The max size for attachments is 250 kb, i'll try to change it to like 1mb which should be sufficient. I'll post back when I've changed the setting.

**edit** ok changed to 1.5 MB which should be plenty for a pdf. Give it a shot.

I think parrying w/weapons is a great idea, but only if the character is trained in using the weapon (Heightened Expertise, Special Weapon, Solid Energy construct, etc,, or has used the weapon often).

We've been using Jeff Dee's version (posted above) for years, though in actuality it comes into play fairly rarely.  One character uses a Shield (it even got shattered once), so she put these rules to good use (she is a character that evades a lot so it fit well with her).

I have  been using this rule for sheilds for years.   A normal sheild gives a person -5 to be hit from the front.  It gives this to the side if the user can turn and is aware of the attack.     If the die roll to hit is within  the 5 point bonus given by the shield then the shield is hit and can be damaged by the attacker.  The player can roll with it as normal.  As long as one structural point is left, the sheild is intack.

Smaller shields can be only -3 to be hit,  larger sheilds can be -7.

While reading some old Amazing Spider Man comics I was thinking about Dr Octopus.  How does this fat tub of lard give Spider Man such trouble?   And the issues when Capt Stacy is killed,  it hit me.  Dr Octopus has a bunch of free attacks to block Spider Man!  This finally inspired me to come up with a blocking rule.  I haven't play tested it yet, so  lets see if it works.

Blocking:  The blocker must have a held action.  He then announces that he is going to block a punch or kick or what have you.   He is braced for the attack, so no evasion permitted.    The attacker throws a punch, the defender interupts the action with a block.  The defender rolls to hit.  If he hits, he can reduce the damage of the attacker's attack by the damage the defender rolls.

Example:  Bad Guy tries to punch Good Guy.   Good Guy gets ready as he doesn't want to start trouble.  Bad Guy throws a punch.   Good Guy interupts the attack, rolls a four and hits. He rolls 12 damage.   Bad Guy's punch did 13 damage.  So only 1 point gets through to Good Guy.

This is expecially powerful when used with a mulitiple attack as the guy who through the first punch can't block cause he has no held action!

Here's a thought.

I like requiring a saved action to block.

In Doc Ock's case, his arms have a high structural rating. So in that case, a blocked attack means that Spidey hits an artificial arm (structural rating = 20 perhaps), probably inflicting no damage to the bionic limb itself.

Just a though.

Parrying: The + to hit of the weapon also gives you the same - to be hit. If you have some sort of expertise with this weapon that bonus can also be used in defense on a case by case basis.
