The Defenders of the Realm

Print Post
The Defenders of the Realm, was a British NPC hero group I worked up for V&V, and posted back on the old RPGnet boards.

History

The Defenders of the Realm are a British superhero group based in London, England. They are the third incarnation of the team to carry the name. The first group of Defenders was formed by the British hero, Defender, during the Second World War (In reality, the team was secretly recruited by Her Majesty's government, and operated under the direct control of the British Special Operations Executive, or SOE). At the time, the team consisted of Defender, Britannia (a direct descendant of Sir Author Pendragon), the super speedster Hurricane, the super soldier Commando, and the mystic Lord Arcane.

The group concentrated most of its activities in Great Briton, but occasionally undertook missions in Occupied Europe against various Axis threats. Their largest European foray occurred on D-Day, where they supported the Allied landings in Normandy. Unfortunately, Commando, the team’s infiltration & weapons specialist was killed while undertaking a classified mission to destroy a Nazi rocket battery targeting Allied Landing beaches. Even though Commando’s death weighed heavily on the team, he was soon replaced by new members Galahad, his winged horse, Victory, and the size changing Tower.

During their time, the group encountered a number of superhuman threats, and racked up a sizable number of enemies, primarily the Nazi super group, The Overmen. Lead by the Nazi supersoldier, Der Aryan, the Overmen counted no less than a dozen members during its existence (other members included Furie, Feldjager, Donner, and  Der Bogenschütze). The two groups clashed on several occasions, with Feldjager eventually being killed, by Defender, in single combat, during the closing days of the war in Europe.

The Defender's had frequent contacts with a number of other heroes, and adventurers, including America’s Minute Men, Alex Knight: The World’s Smartest Man, and several of the European heroes that managed to escape to the UK, from Occupied Europe.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck once again. During his final hours, Hitler ordered that several new experimental rocket planes be used against London, New York, and Washington DC. The planes were equipped with atomic weapons that had secretly been developed by Nazi scientists.

When allied intelligence learned of the weapons existence, their governments dispatched a large group of heroes to attack the aircraft's secret launch site. The group consisted of the Minute Men, The Defenders, Alex Knight, as well as the original American Eagle and Winger. The launch site was protected by a group of  elite SS troops, and the amassed might of the remaining Overmen. During the ensuing battle, several heroes sacrificed themselves to prevent the successful launch of the rocket planes. The British hero Hurricane was killed, and both Galahad and Britannia were seriously injured.

With its numbers seriously depleted, the group was withdrawn from action for several weeks to recover. Its final official mission was another joint operation with the remaining members of the Minute Men, against the Japanese super team, Rising Sun (Daimyo, Kami, and three others).

Post WWII

With the end of the war, the team was disbanded as part of the general draw down of troops, and, with the exception of Defender, most returned to their "normal" lives, only donning their costumes, and assuming their former roles in times of great danger.

Unlike his teammates, Defender continued a life of active adventuring, until a he had a falling out with his superiors over a proposed mission to one of Great Briton's former African colonies. Defender didn't feel it was appropriate for him to be used in such a manner and refused the order. Only direct request by members of the Royal Family, prevented him from being arrested.

Origin and Background: British. Former Para, now professional bodyguard.
Legal Status: British citizen with no criminal record

Origin and Background: Jeremy Stone is a former member of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment and an Olympic contender. He’s trained his body to be at the peak of human perfection. After his father, Timothy Stone, the 2nd man to be known as Defender, and mother were killed by IRA terrorists, he assumed the mantle.

Combat Tactics/M.O.: In combat Defender is usually in the thick of it. When facing more powerful opponents, he’ll tend to stay to the sidelines moving from position to position, engaging targets at long range with his bow. When faced with melee combat, he’ll usually engage with his word or in HTH with his martial arts, as his speed, agility, and strength are usually more than a match for most opponents he faces.

Personality/Character Traits: Defender is a natural leader. He’s firm, but fair and is highly admired by the general public. He’s also one of the most famous British supers. He’ll never retreat if there are innocent lives at danger.

Rouges Gallery: Killjoy

Notes: Here's some additional info on the various Defenders over the years.

The UK based hero, known to the general public as Defender, first appeared during the darkest days of WWII. For Great Briton, things looked bleak. With its back to the wall, battered round the clock by Nazi aircraft, and the threat of an invasion looming just over the horizon, the country needed a hero, someone to give the common man hope and help raise their spirits. As if on cue, that’s when Defender first appeared. The dashing young man, in the colorful costume, would appear whenever or wherever he was needed.

Little did the public know that in reality he was Malcolm Stone, special operative for the The Home Office's Department of Strange Happenings, agent of Her Majesty’s government. His natural abilities enhanced through a combination of modern scientific techniques, and ancient magics, to near superhuman performance levels. Defender operated throughout the UK, and eventually Europe, executing missions as his handlers deemed necessary. During the war he faced such menaces as the Iron Knight, and his arch foe, Der Jager. He continued to operate well into the late 1960’s before finally retiring. He died peacefully in his sleep in late 1997.

Not long after Defender I‘s retirement, a new Defender appeared. Younger, and with a slightly more swarthy attitude than the original, he made his first appearance not long after the “Troubles” began in Northern Ireland. Unknown to the general public, this 2nd Defender was the son of the original. Apparently the process used to enhance his father’s abilities also had an effect on his bloodline.

His children, Timothy and Samantha, were both born with the potential to exceed things that could be achieved by normal humans. Timothy, Defender II, had an enhanced metabolism that allowed him to heal his wounds, and boost his strength, speed, and agility to superhuman levels. His senses were keen to the point that he could hit moving targets with greater accuracy than most machines.

Samantha, who assumed the identity of the crossbow welding costumed adventurer Lady Crimson, was born with the ability to resist the effects of hostile environments as well ignore the effects of poisons, and diseases. In addition, her senses were tuned to superhuman levels.

They operated first as agents of the Crown, then independently, and eventually became founding members of the Defenders of the Realm. Crimson, eventually retired to raise her two children, while Timothy continued to adventure until a serious injury forced his retirement.

During their many battles, both heroes managed to rack a sizable list of enemies, but none was more hated than the PIRA terrorist know as O’Bannon. After several defeats at the hands of the original Defenders, he vowed revenge on them, or anyone associated with them, and promised to not only bring down Her Majesty’s government, but to destroy them and everything they held dear. He tried to make good on that promise when he managed to discover the identity of the 2nd Defender and his wife, and tried to assassinate them in their home. He was stopped by the remaining Defenders before he could carry out his plan.

However, his brutal assault on the Stone estate had a number of unintended consequences. It exposed several traitors within the Department of Strange Happenings, forced a crackdown on IRA activities, and most importantly, served as the genesis for the most recent incarnation of the Defenders of the Crown.

Origin and Background: Elizabeth Haywood is the granddaughter of the reformed mystical villain, Lord Arcane. Over the years her grandfather has trained her in a number of mystical abilities, and her powers continue to grow over time. If she will ever reach anything approaching his level of power remains to be seen.

Combat Tactics/M.O.: In combat Susan tends to stay back and provide support to her teammates. She’ll begin by casting her Aura of Protection. She’ll use her Fog spell to obscure her teammate’s movements, her Cloud Burst, to slow down opponents, and her Mystic Bolt on truly tough opponents. She’ll only use her healing spell in emergencies, as it leaves her tired and vulnerable to attack.

Personality/Character Traits: Due to her upbringing, Susan is very conservative in her views. She’s very proper, and several of her teammates take it as her being a bit of a stuck up, well lets just say it rhymes with witch. While she does tend to be a bit of a snob, her heart is in the right place, and she does want to do the right thing.

Detect Danger: 16%
Inventing Points: 7.5
Inventing: 45%
Origin and Background: Scottish, Fisherman
Legal Status: UK citizen with no criminal record

Origin and Background: Ian McGregor was the Capt. of a Scottish fishing trawler when his vessel was hit by a massive winter storm. Unable to make it back to port, he ordered his crew to ride it out as best they could, despite their valiant efforts, the ship sank into the cold dark waters of the Atlantic. The last thing Ian remembers before waking up on the shore a week later, was the sound of voices in his head arguing if he was to be the one. Since that time he has discovered that he has been chosen as Mother Nature’s champions. Bestowed with abilities beyond those of mortal men and tasked with defending the seas against those who would defile it.

Combat Tactics/M.O.: Ian’s combat tactics are primarily based on water. When in the water he’s practically unbeatable. He’s usually batter his opponents with one of the various storms he can summon up, if he has to engage in physical combat, his physical strength is usually more than a match for anyone he’s likely to encounter.

Personality/Character Traits: Ian has accepted his new responsibilities and takes them quite seriously. When not adventuring, he spend much of his time working with environmental groups and the government in hopes of negotiating some sort of working agreement that allows for a natural balance between man and nature. Ian has a very dark and dry sense of humor, and his teammates find it hard to tell when he’s joking. He also tends to have a nonchalant attitude toward death as he has “seen the other side, and does not fear it.” , which can lead to him taking risks that others may not.

Inventing Points: 5.5           Inventing: 30%
Origin and Background: English, former personal assistant, no full time hero and media personality.
Legal Status: British citizen with no criminal record

Origin and Background
: Cynthia Baker grew up as an average looking girl in a working class family in Manchester, England. Then puberty hit, and things, shall we say, “changed”, she could barely beat of her admirers with a stick. While not the brightest student, she was prudent enough to realize her looks wouldn’t be enough to carry her through life, so she knuckled down, attended university, and  managed to land a job as a personal assistant to one of the BBC’s up and coming producers. While filming an episode of one of the many reality TV shows currently airing, the set was attacked Spanish villain, Corona. During the ensuing battle, Cynthia was struck by an errant energy blast. To everyone’s surprise, not only was she not harmed, she almost seemed energized. She soon discovered that the burst of energy had activated her latent mutant abilities. Within a few short months she’d assumed the identity of the heroine, Thermal. Since then, she’s been a media darling, second in the press only to the Royal Family, with calendars, T-shirts, posters, and hundreds of fan websites.

Combat Tactics/M.O.: Cynthia knows she isn’t a bare knuckles brawler. She’ll usually weight for Defender’s cue , and use her abilities as best he deems fit. She’ll also try to distract opponents with her looks (hence her latest costume design.

Personality/Character Traits: Cynthia is very attractive, good natured, and light hearted, she’s also a bit of a flirt, and isn’t above using her looks to get what she wants. When not adventuring, she’ll usually be found in the hottest clubs in the company of an equally attractive man. While she may come off as a bit flakey, she takes her responsibilities as a member of the Defenders quite seriously, and has never let the team down during a crisis.

Nice team.
Very rich in history.
You do basically what I do and that is fill in the backstory of the chara more fully.
I don't know about you. But when I do that it gives me a more firm grasp on who they are and where they come from.

The artist you have doing the work for you is spectacular.
I have no idea why you would want me to do illos for you when you have talent like that.

Nice stuff again.
So do you use these characters in a game? or do you just write stories about them?

Just curious.

The artist is Storn Cook (www.stornart.com), and he allows you to use artwork for personal use, as long as you're not reselling it, making a profit, etc. And don't knock your artistic abilities, as I think you're pretty good. Story wise, I like working out the backgrounds for these guys, as I think it's fun, and it gives me a bit of an outlet. Plus, everyone seems to enjoy reading over the material. I've never used the Defenders, as they were just something that popped into my head. I randomly picked characters, that I've previously rolled up, and just filled in their backgrounds.

I agree; his art is amazing!

I especially like Defender!   Smiley

The art rocks! It's the kind of art that could make even a dud character seem cool. You know, so what if he only has 3 hit poiints and his only power is the ability to turn into a chipmunk ... he looks cool!

Hey, my character, Mr. Nibblecheeks, is totally awsome.  Don't make fun!

I've had a lot of compliments on the art, but I can't take credit for any of it, as it was done by Storn Cook. For those of you interested, he takes commissions, but you'd need to contact him for pricing.

I'm thinking of adding an additional member to the team, so I'm bumping this one back up.

There are two, I'm still fleshing them out, and until I get my editing privileges back, I don't want to post anything I can't update later.
