Thinking of starting a new online game

OK gents, I've been giving the idea of starting a new online game, some serious thought. If I do decide start one, I'd like how many of you'd be interested in playing. I'd like to limit the number of players to no more than 8 (as it'll be a little to hard for me to keep track of). Turns would run once per week. The setting would be standard four color themed.

As for my house rules. character creation, etc. I'd list them once I get a committal from players. If any of you are interested, please let me know by next Friday.

if I get one more player, I'll start laying the ground work (background story, character creation guidelines, house rules, etc.)

OK, that's a total of four committals, I'll post info on initial character creation, and some ground rules within the next week.

Some basic game info.

CHARACTER CREATION

We'll be using modified versions of the "character templates" (See links below) previously posted here. But, if you got an idea for a character type, shoot me a PM, and I'll take a look at it and get back to you.

Characteristics

You've got two choices for the way you determine your character's stats.

1) Roll four dice, and drop the lowest roll.
2) You get 60 points to spread between your five primary stats, with no stat below an 8.

I don't care which method you choose to use, but once you've made your choice, that's what you're stuck with.

Characteristic Maximums

The maximum stat a non-powered, or “normal” human can attain is 23. The only exception to this rule is the Intelligence score.

Weight & Basic Hits

** Note ** The following info on weight and Basic Hits was posted on the old V&V boards, and I liked them. So like any good GM, I stole the ideas, and made them my own. Cheesy

Weight

When determining a character’s weight use the following:

Males: Roll 1d10 x 10 + 150
Females: 1d10 x 5 + 100

Basic Hits

Use the following table when determining the character’s Basic Hits:

Basic Hits Modification Table

100 lbs. = 2.0 basic hits
110 lbs. = 2.2 basic hits
120 lbs. = 2.4 basic hits
130 lbs. = 2.6 basic hits
140 lbs. = 2.8 basic hits
150 lbs. = 3.0 basic hits
160 lbs. = 3.2 basic hits
170 lbs. = 3.4 basic hits
180 lbs. = 3.6 basic hits
190 lbs. = 3.8 basic hits
200 lbs. = 4.0 basic hits
Etc.

**Edit: I forgot to mention this before (old age), but when determining HP, flip/flop the HP mods for STR and AGL.

Misc. Modifications

Perception: Replaces Detect Hidden
Intuition: Replaces Detect Danger
Public Standing: Replaces Reaction from Good/Evil

Hero Points

Hero Points are basically something I award to players for good game play. They can be used to modify dice rolls (you get to roll twice, and pick the one that's most advantageous to you), "discover" a secret, remember things that you'd forgotten (I tell you what you need to know), etc.

I'll award 1 per level, or 1 for really good role playing, or a truly heroic action. But, on that same note, I'll penalize heroic players 1 point, in addition to losing charisma, for unheroic actions. Say something like continuing to beat on a villain, after he's surrendered, refusing to provide medical attention to an injured prisoner, etc.

Aside from the skills and power list mods, is character creation as per the book? (1d6+2 and a weakness?) or do we get to choose the powers? etc..

I'm likely going to roll a bunch of pcs the old way and see what it sparks as a character, then I'll run it by you.

I'm allowing a lot of leeway in this area. I'm allowing you to use the Character Templates posted in this section (I can shoot them to you if you need them); you can roll them randomly; or you can submit a proposal to me, and I'll look it over.  Whatever method you choose, you'll be limited to no more than seven power, and one weakness, or in some cases, I may allow you to have eight powers, and two weaknesses.

I'm hoping to get you guys characters by next week, as I'll probably add an NPC or two to flesh out your group. If I do end up add an NPC, I still want you guys to remain the focus of the game.

Next week will be a better possibility.. This coming weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving and I'm spending it at Great Wolf Lodge with the kids and two other couples with their kids.

More over this week has been a killer at work. They've been calling me at home 4 out of the last 4 days for support. <sigh>

Me too.

To my fellow players:
Hi guys! Thrilled to be playing.
Any thoughts about a team origin or motif? (all Egyptian gods, all kids/teens, all mutants, all device-guys, all animal-themed, all aliens, all ex-cons, all nation-themed, the four elements, the four seasons, tarot cards, etc.)

Alternately, what if our handles were our characters' names?
Skydiver!
Hammer!
Dr. Weird!
Dr. Foom! (super scientist who discovered a new physical force/energy/dimension called "Foom")

Finally, will we be posting our turns directly to this forum?

Thanks Dom, for running this!

OK, I'll hold off on character requests until next Friday. It'll also give me a chance to post additional background info on some of the people and places you'll be dealing with. I'm also working on compiling some of this stuff into a PDF that you guys can download.

You'll be emailing me your actions, and I'll be compiling them. Once I do, I'll reply to you guys in a group email. I'll also be posting a summery of each "issue" here.

Dom, you mentioned a character sheet, but I don't see it.

I generally use Craig Griswold's excel spreadsheet for that (A lot of the calculations are done for you).

Does that work for you? Do you use the house rule that swaps the HP mods Agility and Strenght?

Just administrivia until I get around to my final pick for a character.

(Dr. Foom! I'll post tonight as soon as the kids are in bed).

Yep, I can squeeze you in, as this is the first time I've run a PBEM, I'd like to cap it at around six players, until I can get the hang of things.

The character sheet is a MS Word document, that's listed as an attachment to this thread. And yes, you can shoot me your character as an Excel spreadsheet. And yes I forgot to mention the switching of the HP mods for STR and AGL, but I'll add a note about it later, as well as the info on Gravity Control.

I saw the attachment symbol in the "hero talk" section, but for the life of me I can't find the attachment in the thread itself at all.

I'll shoot you three power makeup. I'm leaning towards one of them, but I would like to make sure I'm neither too high or too low or completely out to lunch.

Be frank, I'm a big boy. Wink

I have created 2 characters, 1 using my handle "The Cougar" so we can use board names

For a different theme, since there are 2 Doctors in the house 3 of us could have been patients of a secret Scientific facility (sorta like the Maximum Ride books) and the 5 of us escaped.

I didn't come up with something that matched my ID here.. I'd really have to dig up my old character sheet..

I know that he was able so he could handle a few kamikaze-style fly-by attacks, on top of his range attacks. Thus Skydiver moniker.

Thanks!
Skydiver, and everyone else, any thoughts on playing your board name or any of the group origin ideas I posted in Reply #22 of this thread? You won't hurt my feelings if you want to do your own thing.

fyi, Doc Foom is a theoretical physicist / adventurer in the mold of Tom Strong, Reed Richards and Doc Savage.

First stab at a power layout looks like this:

Heightened Intelligence B
Heightened Senses Device: Goggles that can see into other spectrums
Heightened Endurance A
ForceField device (defense only)
Teleportation device
Power Blast device

Homemade hero
Motivation is altruism and the search for knowledge.
Modus operandi is super scientist/inventor.

DF, the first draft looks OK, but I'd like to see a detailed character sheet breaking down his specific ability scores. But off of the top of my head, I've got a suggestion, he could be one of the staff/faculty at "Empire University".

Skydiver, I'm looking over your stuff now. Also, I'll be adding a few more bits of background info on Empire City. But, before I get to detailed, I'm waiting for the rest of guys to respond.

Also, if any of you missed it, when determining HP, flip/flop the STR and AGL HP mods. I'll make sure to post a note in the character creation section.

Here is my first stab

The Machinist - He is a gadgets kind of guy along the lines of Gizmo, Hank Pym, and McGyver.  Visually he looks like Scalphunter assembly components from suit and the enviroment.  The Machinist makes tools not weapons

Powers
Magnetic power
Energy Constructs (Animated)
Gadgeteer (B)
Power Blast
Heighted Agility A (capped to 23 limit)

Currently Handyman/Mechanic for Empire University.  He is a bit of a recluse with an unknown past.  A High Official with connections to University got him the job to pay a debt but no one will admit to knowing what the debt was (like the Steven Seagal character in Under Seige).

Cougar, and everyone else for that matter, one of the now retired members of the Guardians, the heroes who've gone missing, is named Cougar (his daughter, Bobcat, is currently a member of the Guardians). If you want, I can give you a quick rundown of his abilities.

Would you mind explaining how his Energy Constructs would work? Would it be something like "Box" from over in Alpha Flight? And while I'm thinking about it, could all of you guys include a brief write-up of how your powers work, it'll save me having to ask you a lot of questions.

Madison Jeffries is who I had in mind (Now that might be "Box" now, I haven't keep up with Marvel since Bendis took over the company).

I will send you a complete write-up of how the powers work with V&V character sheet tonight.

V&V character creation is too much fun.

Dom,

Do you want me to explain my powers further from what I sent you?

Just a brief description to go along with each of the drafts. Say a couple of lines describing them, or an example would be great. And I'll shoot you a couple of notes later this evening.

At the moment, I'm working on my "campaign bible", for me, a Empire City Source Book, a PDF file with background info for you guys, info on Guardians, This world's Avengers/JLA, as well as an outline of your first couple of adventures. At the moment, the first issue's going to be "A Plea for Help".

Hey guys, good news! Thanks to John, we've now got our own section of the board, called, wait for it...Empire City. So, I'll be moving a lot of this over to that section.

Yow. Two inventor types with Power Blast. I think I'll modify Doc Foom or come up with something else.  Smiley
Any other archetypes been claimed yet, so I know what to avoid?

Don't change yet.  I am working with dsumner.  My character isn't really an inventor and the Power Blast is most likely going away.

But if a gadgeteer like Batman/Scalphunter is too close to your Reed Richards/Doc Savage character.  I understand.  I can change my character so you don't have to.

You did claim the archetype first.

Yeah but you fleshed out your idea really well. Yours feels like a complete concept.
Stick with it and I'll either have my big brain guy be biology (MD) or theory (PhD) based, or go with someone else. I have about 5 character ideas I'm wrestling with.
V&V character creation is too much fun.
