OK, I'll admit, I flat out stole the concept for this after reading over the Perception thread in the House Rules section. Instead of the standard Detect Hidden rules, I'm going to roll with "Perception".

Instead of a the standard Detect Hidden stat, your "Perception" % would be your INT x 3. You could also get a Observation skill that would add and additional 30% to your base % chance, or you could train in skill gaining 5% per level (to simulate you becoming more adept at searches, or just flat out noticing something out of the ordinary). The size of the object you're looking for would also affect your chances. Any questions?

How is this different from investigation as a skill?

I am wondering if the Search skill would be more appropriate for The Machinist as opposed to investigation or tracking?

Hmmm...I may rename Search to Observation as that's more descriptive of what it what you'd be using it for (this is why I post this stuff). But, Tracking is based on a number of things and while similar it's a vastly different skill (this is real life talking). Investigation is more along the lines of what you'd see detectives and/or cops doing in the movies and TV shoes, tracking down bits of information, using deductive reasoning to come to a conclusion, etc.

Okay that makes sense.  Search is a good description (Observation is possibly a little clearer).

Is it possible to switch Investigation to Search/Observation and make my training be gaining Investigation skill?  I think that would better fit from where the Machinist came and where he may be going.

What do you think?

If it is too late, then no problem.  I will put Search/Observation on my training list of things to learn.

I can make the switch if you want.

Just a note; in my group our formula for perception is

Int+Cha divided by 5. +3 + level (roll a D20).

ex; Blackout has a 20 charisma and 13 intelligence at 3rd level. His perception score is a 13 (33/5 = 7 after rounding off +3 +3 = 13)

Works very well!
