An Old V&V Player Returning

Print Post
Hello all,

So the first every RPG I ever ran back in 1985 was V&V.

I fell in love with this game (I had picked up Champions at the same time and couldn't make height nor hair of it).

I loved this game but eventually got talked into MSH Classic in about 1989 and sort of moved on.

Now, older and hopefully wiser, I am returning to V&V.

I don't know if I will play it again, try to modernize it or just bask in the nostalgia.

Whatever the case turns out to be, it's just nice to see it is alive and well.

Cheers.

Welcome aboard, AslanC. If your name's a Narnia reference, it's very a-pro-po for a long-lost, returning player.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

Please feel free to check out my blog at;

http://earthalpha.blogspot.com/

My most recent post is about my V&V quest Wink

Feel free to sign up as a follower, I don't post often but I usually try to have fun with it Smiley

So since this is a nice neutral post, I will use it to ask some questions.

1] Living Legends wasn't my cup of tea, but has anyone ever updated or modernized V&V, while keeping the flavour of the original?

2] Are there any fan produced projects?  Or which section would be appropriate to discuss/create them in?

3] What are the rules of discussing other superhero rpgs?

4] What are the feelings on raising old threads from the dead?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Smiley

Hey Aslan,

No rules about other games, raising old threads, or pretty much anything.   If you want to talk about anything but you are not sure where to go, go to Hero Chat.   My Mod style is very laid back.  As long as a poster doesn't give out someone's personal info,  its cool.  We are all adults here.
I am in the process of revising my house rules and copying the rule books format.  In fact, if anyone has a scan of the rule book that I can use with Microsoft word, let me know.

And I never played Living Legends,  It didn't feel right to me.

Welcome, Aslan.

I'm Doug, the one who recommended this site over on the Yahoo email group.

As for your questions:

1) I think you'll find the general consensus here is that Living Legends is not a true, worthy successor to V&V.  It's got a tiny bit of the flavor, but not as much as most of us would like.  I playtested the game for Jeff Dee, and wanted to really like it, but too much of it falls short.  I wish there was a V&V 3.0 that we could all agree on, but I've found - especially in playing with different players and groups from around the world - that we're all too opinionated about what should or shouldn't be in there.   Smiley   Most of us have simply made up our own homebrewed rules additions and changes.

2) There's a ton of fan-produced stuff out there.  There's a number of websites that have stuff; two of the notable ones that are loaded with great stuff are:

V&V Emporium: http://paratime.ca/v_and_v/index.html

V&V Campaign HQ: http://paratime.ca/v_and_v/campaigns/hq/

There's also a Most Wanted Volume 2, and many people's websites devoted to their specific campaigns.

3) As John said, feel free.  Probably Hero Talk is the most appropriate place.

4) Go for it!

Great to have you here!

I've got the rulebook in Microsoft Word (or at least most of it), thanks to the hard work of Justice.  Let me know an email and I'll see if I can't get it to you.

I thought it was complete, but the last time I looked at it, it seemed like there was something not there.  I'll have to check when I get home.

Nice thing is, it's not just a scan (I've got PDF versions of the rules simply scanned in).  Justice took the time to carefully and methodically type it out character by character.  It's a beautiful thing for cutting and pasting in your own home rules (making a customized, personalized rulebook of your own).

Thanks everyone

Yeah how do I get this place to send me email notifications when threads I have typed in are replied to?

Sorry to miss all those posts.

Thanks for reading the blog.  I am still not sure returning to V&V is right for me, but I will read it over the holidays and see.

Thanks for the links.

Where do I find this "Most Wanted 2" project? Smiley

Here is the website to the project:

Just realize that it has been dead in the water (as far as anything new) for a LOOOOOOOONG time.

Living Legends - I really think this is Jeff's attempt to save the game he loves.  I mean V&V was created by Jeff and Jack in their teens, and look at how it has held up.  The fact that the publisher is killing it, and Jeff has no recourse is tough.  I think it's also an attempt to make V&V more similar to Champions, the game that I abandoned V&V for many years ago... I blame it on my youth. Smiley Say what you want about how bland and heartless Champions is compared to V&V.  If you look at what's going on in the marketplace, Champions s still rocking and rolling, growing and making cash.  They keep putting out modules, though most are remakes of their more popular titles, and revised rulesets on a regular basis.  They are at conventions, and doing what a game has to do to succeed.  I think Jeff's idea is to try to maintain the best of V&V, while apealing to the audience that wants the illusion of balance that a points based game provides.

I think the concept of game "balance" is a silly thing.  Certain characters are always going to excel while others will lag, and more often than not it depends on the player and the gm, no the system.

UNless it's D&D, then just play a wizard with lots of fighter and cleric meat-shields and eventually you will rule the universe Wink

Exactly, as I said, the illusion of balance.  You might use the same number of points, but that doesn't make all characters equal.

Comics have never been like that.  I think it's one of the things they got right with City of Heroes, I mean, I think there should be a way to get powers from other powersets, but the basic premise is a good one.

Believe you, me.  I have been a Champions guru since...  Nevermind how long...

But I can gaurantee that my 250 points and the next guy's are NOT the same.  I haven't played V&V in a long time.  Avatar suggested this site to me and its kinda got me jazzed about playing V&V.  I still have my original copy.

Both system's have their merits.  V&V is much simpler and the character generation is A LOT faster.

I'm looking forward to having some fun here though!!!

Until next time, EXCELSIOR!!!!!

Great to have you here, Draconis!  I think you're totally right - both systems have their plusses and their minuses.

We look forward to having some fun with you here, too!  Welcome!   Smiley
