Hmmm.. neat.  Captain... simple but seems to need something else...

Star Captain, Captain Cosmic, Sky Captain {meh},
Captain Powers, {eh.. perhaps too close to Austin Powers}, Captain Falcon...{nah.. too much of a chance of FALCON PUNCH..spoofs..we want serious}.

Sky Commander, Iron Eagle, Captain Warp, Captain Justice... {not sure... some of these sound sort of golden age}.

Force Commander, Captain Steel, Starforce, Captain Q.

...so many ..I know some really cheesy..but it all depends on how you present it.

file name editted:
Thanks Rog I had forgot I had used that as the file name. It just represented his Air Force rank nothing more.

I'll write up a narrative background if Dom approves the character. Maybe a name will come to me then. I'm thinking it might be a monkier based on his training as an Op-For with the BSI/STOP teams ... or his old call sign as a F-16 pilot.

Then there's the angst of uniform design - I refuse to call it costume  Smiley

I actually like Captain... or something similar, and as to it being golden age(ish), his background has him coming from a very different point of view than the rest of the characters.

Reminds me of another Captain, in the Avengers movie... a totally different set of values than the other heroes.

He sounds very cool!

Thanks Hammer. I don't deny that you will find a number of character elements borrowed from Steve Rogers. I say Steve Rogers not necessarily Captain America.

The two come from different times in history, and if I do my job right that will be reflected in the character. I'm actually researching the poli-sci and history of that period even though I lived it while in the navy to make sure I'm on the right track.

I'm certain I'll be "golden aging" it a touch. Regan, the Russians, the economy, etc. All memories of a simpler time and all that BS'. He's a 'brick' but if he was a martial artist I would play the personality the same.  Tactical fighter. Moral (not black and white - moral) personality. A man who feels out of place and time. Or at least that's the plan. Have to see where the character and game take us.

Captain.

Conveys a sense of authority that is hard to develop in a RPG, and if it isn't a respected authority then it's really just an empty title. Captain America, even Marvell, after their deaths were widely respected. Captain Atom and Marvel (DC) not so much. Not that they aren't good characters and maybe even well liked, but they hardly carry the title 'Captain' with the gravitas of the other two.

In part I think the simple title of 'Captain' would be a great name for the character. Just not sure he could live up to the image I feel it should project. Some solid for for thought though. Thanks.

OK, I've been trying to come up with a name for this guy, and how does Bastion sound? (And yes I know that's the name of an X-Men villain).

Origin/Background:
Its 1987, and President Ronald Reagan was struggling with the fallout of the Iran-Contra Affair. In May, the U.S.S. Stark is hit by two Iraqi missiles killing 47 sailors. In June, Reagan challenges Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. Then came October, and in an instant, for Captain Jason Rollins the world changed forever.

Black Monday was the day stock markets plummeted all around the world, and the day Iran learned harboring meta-terrorist would have a price. A month earlier they had sponsored an attack in Brazil. It was covered up in the news as a radiation accident at an abandoned hospital. The truth was far more sinister. In response, the U.S. in conjunction with British and Israeli forces conducted a top secret surgical strike against a number of meta-terrorist training facilities.

During this multi-pronged attack, Captain Rollins flew with a squadron of F-16s into northern Iran. Operation: Tartarus Valley called for a strike on a training camp near a base near the Urmia Lake Bridge project. Reinforced by the presence of two American metas, a dozen air force Fighting Falcons commenced its attack run in the morning’s pre-dawn light.

In the first two minutes of the battle half the squadron’s jets and one of the ‘heroes’ had gone down to the villains.  Somehow they knew. Whether there had been a leak or by some other means, they knew. Only with the Falcons working as a team with the ‘hero’ were any of them able to survive. They were able to neutralize all but one of the aerial villains. That one in particular was causing havoc.

Someone needed to shut the door so the others could withdraw back into Turkey air space. As the senior surviving member of the squadron Captain Rollins ordered the Falcons to escort the wounded hero home. It was simple math. That hero was a national asset, and his jet was damaged. It likely wouldn’t have made it back home anyway. Out of missiles, Jason bore down on the pursuing villain guns blazing. At the last second the meta-terrorist waved his hands and the last thing Jason saw was a shimmering pool of light ... and then darkness.

. . . and then stars.

Six months . . . and twenty-five years later Jason Rollins is walking across the ECU campus to his Media and Modern Culture class. He was distracted at the moment. After this morning’s training exercise with the BSI, he had decided maybe it was time. He had just moved to Empire City, but he could see what the absence of the Guardians was doing to the city. They needed help. The kind of help he was uniquely qualified to offer.

“Crap … I’m going to need a new uniform.”

Personality/Character Traits:
Born and raised on a small farm by his grandparents in the midwest, Jason grew up in a community far from the hero-filled cities of the east coast. But heroes come in many forms, and for Jason, it was his grandfather, a veteran of World War Two. More through actions than words, the old man taught him the importance of values such as honesty, courage, and humility. These principles are what make up the very core of Jason Rollins personality.

As a child he had watched Nixon go through Watergate, and as an adult, Reagan deal with the Iran-Contra Affair, but no one man leads the nation, not even when that one man is the President. Jason may no longer be able to actively serve in the military, but he swore an oath over twenty-five years ago to protect his country from enemies both foreign and domestic. To his last breath, he with faithfully serve and protect its people and the principles they stand for.

The country has changed a lot in the last twenty-five years, in some ways it has stayed the same. The Colts were the same sad team then as they are today, and a good grilled steak and beer still taste best in the backyard with friends and family. What friends he had back then had all grown old now, and his grandparents died a few years ago. The world had rushed full speed ahead over the years, and now he takes university classes hoping someday he can catch up to it all.

Grin Hey now, even though he too hates the monkey suits, at least this guy recognizes the need of one right off the bat.

I've been waiting on your response my man Smiley I think the lessons learned from Blue are going to pay great dividends playing this character. Just the construction of the powers alone, I so wish I had thought of tweaking Armor like this - wow coming up on 2 years ago.

I was going to make a joke about a Star Hammer but couldn't stop laughing long enough to type it  Wink

Absolutely, and for a number of reasons.

Does 9/11 take place in the Protector's Universe? I know not all GM's incorporate that event and all that followed because of it in their comic worlds. Captain Rollins is of the Reagan era so he'll come from a time of cowboy politics.

He also will see his role as a support element for the police and military, not as a lone avenging 'vigilante'. I hope to try to stress someone who believes in supporting the system (not blindly). Who fosters cooperation between 'heroes' and the government. That they can do more as partners instead of as adversaries.

Cool Crap that's not bad better save some of that for the game  Grin

Okay off I go to do his Personality/Character Traits.

From his background, I can see him being a big fan of Peyton Manning, even though he's now left the Colts.  Smiley

And yes, I've been working on my character.  Will probably post him in a different thread, so as not to hijack this one.

He'd actually have very little knowledge of Peyton Manning. Peyton was in college when he dissappeared.

Now me? I like it so much I'm thinking of changing his name from Jason to Colt (have I mentioned I'm a fan of the Longhorns  Wink)

PS: Dom has named the Character and someone here is the grand winner of a bonafide "no prize" (ala Stan Lee)  Cool

I sent Dom some ideas on that very matter just the other day . . . and you my friend win the second "No Prize" (ala Stan Lee) of this thread. I did have a stylized flight suit  of sorts in mind for parts of it's design.

I like the Rocketeer's Jacket but I know that's too old and out of period.

Except for the fact my guy is Blonde, the following is a visual of flyboy's headshot. I got the original idea from the goggles WWI aviators would wear.

I'd like for it to be the one piece of tech/gear he would have ... at some point. It's suppose to be a streamlined version of military-grade nightvision goggles and laser-range binoculars. (available on amaxon.com - lol)  Wink

Remember - blonde

I like this one best because the earpieces can also serve as comm-gear.

Ick ... that sounds like someone running with the Floop Brothers buddy.

It is considered bad form to try to give oneself a call sign. It's why I asked for help. He would think giving himself one presumptuous. Dom came up with one that I think nicely fits his theme, so in that line of thought, I think it's only right he chooses when to "officially" hang the moniker on the character.  Wink

It's killing me not to though  Grin

Here's a little something that popped into my head.

CODENAME: RAMPART Pt. 1

January 13, 2012, an Air National Guard base located upstate from Empire City.

Senior Airman Ryan Richards yawns as he stretches his arms in the early morning light of the air traffic control tower. He’d had a late night and was still shaking off the effects of one too many drinks, when squawk in his headphones snapped him out of his daze.

“Tower this is Hammer Two Three, over.”

He glanced down at the radar screen in front of him, as the two icons representing a pair of a pair of A-10 ground attack aircraft slowly worked their way across the screen. They were right on schedule, and would be in view within a few short minutes.

Just as he pressed his radio’s push to talk switch to respond, the screen flickered, and then went blank. “What the hell?” he thought, as he double checked the power. But before he chad a chance to move, BOOOOMMM!

Glass flew everywhere as the control tower’s windows shatter from the force of the shockwave. Airman Richards and the tower’s other occupants were sent flying onto the floor, just as the radio came alive with excited chatter.  “Jeezus! What the hell is that? Tower, can you see this?” “It’s some kind of…some kind of hole in the sky.”

"You're not going to believe this, but an F-16 just flew out of the hole!"
