As Usual I got a drawing of my Marshal Strong character at this year's NY ComicCon.  This is Col. Strong smashing thru a door, (probably before accidentally killing his next victim and then feeling bad).

  I saw this full size last night. Another awesome Colonel Strong. But once again why does the guy who does 3d10 HTH  to hit still use a pistol???? Shocked

More importantly, why isn't he carrying his Stellar Rod in a pic yet?  Grin

Because its less damage!  1d8 vs 3d10 is much more merciful... and less prone to kill out of hand.  Especially if he's getting a damage bonus on top of that...

My character Thunderbolt has a 2d8 Lightning Bolt... and he carries a gun and a sword for similar reasons.

Though with Colonel it may simply be ...'old habits die hard'? Smiley

Great pic Mr. Strong. (I'm a fan of the domino mask) You seem to always find an excellent artist at these things.

As a side note: pulling one's punch would seem a lot more 'humane' than potentially putting a bullet in someone's spinal column  Embarrassed

Well, Strong is/was in the military (he holds the rank of Colonel), so carrying/using a firearm is part of his training. I don't recall him ever using it since I've played (I know he likes to use the Lightning Gun alot), but he does have it when he needs it.

...My point exactly.

But, is there a rule somewhere int he Revised V&V Rules for pulling one's punch?  I haven't seen one... and how would you 'pull' the punch of a Power Blast[d20] or a lightning bolt[2d8]?  You roll that '20' or double 8's and some normal thug is guacamole... so much for due process {more like food process}!

And the answer is...Marshal Strong carries a gun because ... It's cool!  Congratulations ONI you win!  I always liked characters with guns  - Grifter, Paladin, Rick Flagg, Fantomex, The Black Hood, Punisher. etc.
BTW, Gerry you are correct, Strong's military service is still the core of his identity. 
Also, he can't fly and in the beginning I was taking massive damage from bad guys who had guns and ranged weapons as well as supervillains who could strike from a distance or fly and stay out of range from my punches.  Guns and power blasts = death to first level characters!
and PS: this drawing was once again done by Elvin Hernandez and colored by his art studio partner Bryan. I think his colors add a lot to Elvin's art, I was really happy when I saw it for the first time.

Yes, the rulebook does have info on pulling punches.  See this thread for the answer (I wrote out the part straight from the rulebook).

And I totally agree with Ranger, a gun can have way worse complications than a Power Blast, generally.  Smiley
