Hacking attempts

All

The security reporting mechanism within the board software has notified me of about 30 hacking attemtps just last night.  I normally see about 1-2 a day so I am hoping this is just a flurry of activity from a similar source(s) and will subside.

I have it set up to auto ban IP addresses from would be intruders and also auto kick members who attempt to use scripts to  bring the site down.

Just keep an eye out of weird looking posts and make me aware asap. Also keep in mind that if the flurry continues, it could slow the site down periodically, but so far so good!

Thanks.

Probably just a super villain trying to glean secrets about heroes.

That or all the talk between John and Paul has drawn attention from gay porn spambots. Wink

LOL

I was thinking it was the "enjoy the boobies" thread. Seems ever since that was created some time ago, the attacks have increased!

Since nobody posts there anymore maybe I'll just kill it.....   Cry

What?
I think that thread needs to be protected and nurtured.
It's so... educational. Smiley

Just wanted to bump this up as last night there was a flurry of activity and this time they are new attacks.  People are trying to run scripts (programs) that are brute force attacking user names and passwords.

I am not really concerned about it from a username perspective, but if you know your password is relatively weak (if your account is more than a year old it might be weak) you should change it in my opinion.

John this is especially true for you and I since we are administrators.  If anyone gets access to our accounts it's bye bye forums.

Any idea whey they're so interested in hacking this site?

Honestly I think it's kids using crawlers to find keywords in sites and then if those words match they try to get access.  I wasn't kidding on the boobies comment because that, among other words throughout this forum, might make crawlers believe this is a p0rn0 site, hence the attacking for "free" access begins.

Others are just meniacal and just want to try their hacking toys out to bring sites down, etc.

The last reason, which I see as "normal" hack attempts (i.e. bots creating ID's so they can post) are mass spammers.  But I have that pretty locked down. I don't think anyone is seeing any spam posts or PM messages.

Critical Fumble had a recent bout of bot attacking.  The moderator commented about it in their chat thread.

And if the boobies thread is part of what is causing the issue, I'd say just axe it.
