Anyone read Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson?

I just started the book today at lunch.  Pretty interesting premise so far.  A red comet appeared in the sky, sometime after that, people started developing powers (not all people, just some).  None of the people stepped up to become heroes though.  Something about the power corrupted them, and they all became villains.  The titular character, Steelheart, took over as emperor of Chicago.

One of the points it made was that fighting against the epics (what the setting calls them) was pretty much useless, so the government pass legislation that made epics outside of the law.  So they could do whatever they want.  Which they pretty much could anyway, and that's why the law was written.

I've never read Sanderson's work. But I'm a faithful listener to the Writing Excuses podcast he co-hosts:

I was researching Mr. Sanderson and I found out that he was chosen to finish the "Wheel of TIme" series by Robert Jordan.

I think he actually wrote the last two books, using Jordan's left behind notes.

Personally thought he did a great job of emulating Jordan's style.

Was able to read a bit more during lunch today (that is really about the only reading time I can find).  Definitely enjoying the book and setting.  Not something I would prefer to model with V&V, but it would be plausible.

From a setting standpoint, I would compare it somewhat to the series by John Ridley "Those Who Walk in Darkness" & "What Fire Cannot Burn".  However, the main character in Ridley's set is a despicable character who has no growth and honestly is just as, if not more unlikable, than the super villain murderers she hunts.

I'll continue to give thoughts and considerations as I read through the book.
