I have achieved limited alliteration.

This will be my next adventure. Just to be different, it has no Manga-ness. It's more steampunkish, and features some effectively-powerful baddies.

Because I like you'se guys - here is a piece of concept art of one of the bad guys (she's the nice one of the bunch)

Art-guy Yad is busy with work from FASA, but he assures me that he'll be on the job in a couple of weeks.

It also features a couple of these

- and that's the mundane stuff.

I guess I do need a teaser...

The city of Centerville is being held hostage by a magic-wielding megalomaniac who uses clockwork soldiers and Bionic Valkyries as his muscle. He commands his forces from a flying ship (not a blimp... an actual ship) that wields the power to destroy the city with a single shot. His demands are simple, he will accept only total rule over all of the nations of the Earth. If his demands are not met, he'll kill the citizens of the town a few at a time - when he runs out of citizens, he'll turn the town into a smoldering crater, and move on to the next city until his demands are met.

No anime or manga in this one. Really more of a "Golden Age" kind of plot.

Thunderbolt --- I can't remember Smiley Yad just labelled her as "Valkyrie" LOL! I may need to talk to him about that.

If you wanna see what a CHESS Knight/Valkyrie suit looks like, go get Department-88 (they started off with surplus Knight Armor and developed it into the Samurai armor), there is a pictorial history of the development form one suit to the other, and Yad did some REALLY nice work on it. I like it because Yad hates drawing MECHA, and I like making Yad suffer.

After some recent discussions with other creators, I have elected to step away from my role as a contributor for the V&V product line.

I don't know if I am allowed to just give my unpublished work away at this point, so this adventure may be further delayed.

It will be nice to come to this forum as a fan of the game, a player, and a GM, instead of someone representing FGU.

I harbor no ill will towards Mr. Bizar. And I enjoy chatting with most of the contributors - they have some fun/weird/fun ideas that are great fodder for "fan-boy chatter".

Thanks for supporting my work. Now let's talk V&V for real!

After a bit of arm-twisting by Yad, I've agreed to finish this project (since it was ready for art and layout anyway).

It should be an enjoyable adventure. No anime or manga this time, just the old stand-by of a power-crazed megalomaniac who wants to rule the world. His henchmen are robots, and his lieutenants are powered-up bionic/android/robotic-body ladies with minds twisted by years of brainwashing (and "medication"). The main bad guy is basically nuts, and was involved in both WWI and WWII. He is a fairly powerful magic user with an android body and has visions where a Norse goddess tells him to take over the world - so he's nuts.

As always I enjoy seeing my books in print - it has yet to grow old.

Nope.
If this adventure were not already written and waiting on art, I would not have moved ahead with it. I probably would have ended up posting it here for free.

But your fake quote had me wondering if I had lost my mind for a few seconds  Grin

Well guys, after a freakishly long delay, "Centerville City Under Siege" has been compiled and sent off to the boss (Mr. Bizar). With a bit of luck ya'll will have it in your hands fairly soon.

Sorry this took so long... thanks for waiting, there is an outside chance that it will be worth the wait.

Looks as though the "correct" number will be 2040c, so it will be in the same Giant as "Department 88" (2040b). I cannot remember what 2040a is though.

Woooooo! Yeah that was a heck of a project.. now with that out of the way there are some tweaks I get to look into for the website. Including new non pixelated front images! Since.. well… I didn't have time to figure out the correct resolution when we put it up.

I appreciate that. Even I wait for the print copies. I just like them better.

Unfortunately, this one may take a while. It and "Department 88" are in Giant no. 10 (I think), so it'll be printed after Giant No. 9 (and I haven't seen anything from that one yet). Hopefully it'll be worth waiting for. I know I'm jonesin' to get a fully published version of Department 88.

LOL!!!!

AK sent me an PM. Turns out there is no spellcheck in software Yad used to lay out the cover, and he and I are both dyslexic as hell.

Go back to the image of the cover and read it very carefully.

I'm unable to get it, as the website is one of the most frustrating I've ever dealt with.

First it would not recognize me.  Even though I have my password saved and tried it 3-4 times, it kept telling me it didn't recognize my username/email.

But then when I went to create a new account, it said my username/email was already taken.

So I tried saying that I'd lost my password, and it instantly sent me a confirmation email.

Which the "confirmation link" sends me right back to the page where it all started (where it won't let me even log in).

I can imagine a new customer would have given up long, long ago...  Angry

I would have loved to see what you came up with, John.  Unfortunately, FGU's website sucks.  Huh

Update: I was able to get it, as I was sent another email that actually allowed me to change my password (even though I'd never lost it).

Bottom line, I was able to get it, though it wasn't just $4.  They also add $3 for shipping, even though it's just a PDF (must be an electronic fee for "shipping" it across the internet)  Wink

It's also worth noting that the misspelling in the title was fixed, though the electronic document itself (which it automatically saves as unless you change it) still has it spelled wrong.

Yad did a great job on the artwork!

The cover has been changed?  Ah-ha!  I have TWO original covers, now!  Billions upon billions!  Nyah-hahahahaha!

AK told me not to say anything about the spelling!  Then he said something!?  What?!

I had trouble with the website, too.  I didn't have PayPal.  The guy who replied to my email told me to select PayPal to pay with, and then select Master Card instead of PayPal.

The website issue may have been a propagation thing. Since I finished the project and it is the holiday, we have taken a bit of time to work on the site to tighten some things up with behind the scene code stuff. You may have noticed the images on the front page are crisper than they used to be. Sooo yeah, sorry about that.

Also with replacing files, there is for some reason an odd delay, especially if the files have the same name.

Thank you for the compliments.

Oh.. gods.. I can't wait to receive my copy!!! I'm very tempted to buy it anyways... again!  My friends had an absolute SCREAM playing the play-test of the Centerville Assault... no better enemies than spellcasting Nazis with cybernetic Valkyrie... and my players were AWESOME..NONE of the Valkyrie died..they are actually trying to break their conditioning, such HEROES!

Been planning on buying Department 88 anyways.. want great bridge part 2...

If you can get me the odd-ball cover, I'll be happy to sign it for you. Just PM me for the snail mail addy.
Any time you catch something like that, it's fine to IM or e-mail me. Just hold off on making a public post. It's a little courtesy, and I'm pretty sure that's where AK was going when he asked you not to say anything.

Oh..

Wow! They were trying to turn the baddies! Very heroic! They deserve some bonuses for that.

Also, you're making me blush a little.

City Under Siege was a pain to write, but also a lot of fun! I got to step away from my normal anime/manga niche and do something a little different. It's really hard to discuss much on the forum without giving away spoiler - so I'll let it just go without comment for a while, other than to say it's actually kind of dark.

I really like Department 88. I just sat down and went kinda nuts with the whole "Japanese CHESS" concept. There is actually more stuff I could have put in there, but it was already getting to about the right page-count, and I could not figure out how to fit more in. Maybe I'll do another D-88 book one day. For now I am relaxing and pondering a Trilogy involving Kaiser Albrecht, the Valkyries, and more clockwork soldiers.

Great Bridge 2 was also fun to write. The biggest issue I had was that I had covered so many Anime/Manga archetypes in GB1, that I had to do some real work to get characters. I knew I wanted to do a Sentai Team of some kind, but I had already created the Armor Dolls in "Centerville Incident", so I went another direction with the low-tech sentai team. A Super-Sentai team would be cool as well, but the "Really Big Thing" rules need to be play-tested some more.

I did finally write an adventure featuring Marie LaRouge and her gals. It even has enhanced stats for her crew, and some information about how she operates. It was designed for first-time players, so it's really straight forward, but fun for new guys and can be tweaked for more experienced players. I still need to write backgrounds for her crewmembers. What do ya'll think? Should they be First Person like Marie's or third person (from Marie's point of view)?

Just started reading it, and it looks fun so far!

How many rockets at the start do you recommend?  It says "several" and each one carries eight Soldiers, so I imagine even sixteen should be quite challenging, if there's only, say, four heroes.  I suppose they could attack in 'waves', to make it more doable.  Thunderbolt, how many did you use for the initial attack?

Ironnerd, did Ms. Tabitha van Hoekstra get changed into Bradley van Hoestra at some point?

I'm looking forward to playing this one, though it might be awhile, being as my smaller, less-experienced group hasn't been able to meet lately and my long-time group hasn't found a chance to play V&V lately (we've been trying out FFG's new Star Wars game, and haven't even done our regular The One Ring for a few months).

Once ‘The Kaiser’ had made his demands and the Uhrwerk Soldaten began rounding people up the fight started in earnest.

I initially attacked with 50 Uhrwerk Soldaten, and Walkure – Skalmold and Kara {the two fliers}.  The Uhrwerk Soldaten were the main focus of the attack and the Walkure were to support the Soldaten’s efforts from above.  I held the rest of the Walkure in reserve with Hilder on the lift waiting as back up if needed.

The Soldaten were a fine opponent especially with all the civilian targets in the way… but I felt there should have been some function for the Soldaten to ‘combine-fire’ for greater accuracy as their +3 on Ranged attacks was not enough to be anything other than a minor inconvenience for the heroes… more of a threat to the masses of innocent bystanders.  Soldaten, at best, are 8- on d20 to hit - a less than 50% hit ratio.

Yes, with 50 of them on the field eventually several would be able to hit… but that is again why a battle map of the tactical combat area was sort of needed.  It did not seem reasonable considering the large scale of the area that all 50 could target the heroes at the same time, and with all the civilians in the way a clear line of fire would have been unlikely{not that this was a concern of the Soldaten}.

In my play test the Soldaten parachuted down from the Von Stengle... the 'rockets' must have been a refinement in the finished adventure.

Majestic: I figure "several" rockets is enough to drop a number of Uhrwerk that would prove challenging to the Player Characters and get them introduced to these new opponents. With the highly cinematic nature of V&V, it is sometimes difficult (or even counterproductive) to give exact numbers.
Bradley is Tabitha's father. He is the CEO at GreenFuture and managed to get her appointed as one of the Mayor's aids. Both Father and Daughter are in this adventure (although they play bit parts). I'm hoping both will become more important in future adventures.

Thunderbolt: In this updated version of the adventure you tested, I added the rockets as an additional delivery system for the Uhrwerk. The parachutes were replaced with rotor-chutes (auto-gyro back-pack units, 'cause Yad thought it would be cool, and I agreed). And the Uhrwerk can "Combine Fire".

As always, I made the bad guys a little on the weak side, remembering that the GM can (and really should) cheat to make things interesting. Feel free to fudge a few rolls if you think something cool needs to happen. The biggest reason for the GM screen is to hide the GM's notes and die rolls from the players. The information on them is just a bonus.

{Blush}.. hehe...sorry most of what I posted was an excerpt from the After mission Assessment e-mail I sent to Yad of my play-tested observations after my party played the scenario.  So.. I probably should have cut a but more of what I pasted... snicker.

It might be nice.. since Majestic is a long-time poster here if I could just send him the play test assessment notes of how our run through the scenario went... but, I'd have to ask YOU Ironnerd to ask Yad if that would be ok?  I was told to keep the lid on what we were testing and technically that info belongs to Yad alone... but I think Majestic would get a kick out of reading how our run of the scenario went!  Grin

@ Majestic - Oh.. my players were all 6th to 8th level heroes so the fight was a bit more cinematic... though it was STILL a grueling hard battle... and the Kaiser STILL got away anyways!!

'Curses... Foiled by these upstarts! Mark my Words NEW GUARDIANS... I the DIVINE Albreck will have My REVENGE! You have not seen the last of the 4th Reich!!!'  Cheesy

@ Ironnerd - An.. just noticed something..heh.. makes even MORE sense now..even though I did not know it before...

Marie LeRouge... her original Solar Sail ship design.. boat and all was STOLEN by GreenFuture...!!! All the more reason for her to be present as I used her in our run of the scenario! Cute and Sweet.. Yahar!

FWIW, there is a $3 shipping charge on every order. Each order is actually processed individually by Scott live, and if the order is only PDFs he manually removes the shipping charge before processing your card. This is how the shopping cart has always been due to the web designer not writing a script that can distinguish the difference between product types.

I'd forgotten about that $3 refund; it's been awhile since I'd done an order.

@Ironnerd: I'm cool with GMs who do fudge numbers, if that's their style, but I don't use a GM screen (hardly ever have), and so roll everything right out there where the players can see.  Makes things a bit more random, but the players can always know that they truly overcame the obstacles based on their own wits and skills (or those of their characters).

I accept that I am something of an oddball when it comes to GMing (and writing adventures). I appreciate the value of rolling everything out in the open so the players can see the results, but that can also lead to problems. Problems like the main bad guy getting KO'd in the first phase because the GM rolled 01 on the Knock-Out roll, or all of the villain's minions losing their moral and running away from the Vigilantes when what really should happen is a cool battle. You can't take it back, because everyone saw it.

I roll behind a screen to make sure the die rolls fit the story and don't cause undo damage to the player-characters. About 90% of the rolls are left "un-fudged". The rolls that actually get massaged are altered only to increase player enjoyment or proper story-telling.

We're well into topic drift at this point, so I'll mention the $3 refunds. I chatted with one of the web guys last night. He's not aware of why the PDF's are being charged shipping when there is an option on the new site for "Downloadable" files.

For those who have already downloaded a PDF from the new site, please check your credit card statements to see how much you actually paid. You can PM me with the total.

I'm pretty sure the PDF's are $4 each (I got City Under Siege for free...), if you were charged $7 initially, then shipping is still being included, and that needs to be addressed. If you were charged $4, then the site is functioning properly, and the $3 refund is a different issue which the web team needs to track down.

Yes, it IS available at Drive-thru... and I already have a super-great comment posted for the book (see pic).

I dunno if Chris D is in this forum. I would like to thank him for the comment, and for calling me and the owner of FGU "Criminals". The comment is so poorly written that most people who read it will thing that I am the criminal in question.  Of course I can't leave comments on my own work at Drive Thru (because I would look like a ever-lovin' jack-wagon), so I had to contact the humans that run Drive thru and ask that the comment be removed. No word back as yet.

Annnnd that comment is Liable no matter whom he is referring to. As there have been no criminal charges levied against anyone working for or with FGU.

BUT thats not what this thread is about. Back on Centerville Under Siege… anyone have the chance to play/read/flip through/lick/fondle the adventure yet?

Well, it was really just a random customer who has sympathies for Mr. Dee and Mr. Herman. DriveThru had nothing to do with the content of the post, but they did resolve the issue quickly. I just don't think that was the proper venue for the statement.

In other news... PLEASE post your positive reviews of the adventure on DriveThru RPG! It helps my sales, and all sales of V&V stuff (both FGU and MHG).

...if there are positive reviews that is... (fishing for a compliment here guys... don't leave me hanging...)

Ironnerd,

Just read through City Under Siege. Excellent job and Kanonfodder did an outstanding job with the art.

I normally don't care for magic and mysticism (in this game anyway) but it made sense with the whole steampunk feel and it was a major part of the story.  I like the fact it is also a potential trap, though.

Very nicely done. You're inspiring me to get off my dead ass and polish my stuff for submission.

Got my copy of Giant #10 today - looks like some great work! Congrats to JPA and Yad for more quality work!

AND... correct me if I'm wrong, but Department 88 is the first book devoted to an organization that has been produced for V&V. Sure we've had adventures that introduced a group - heck, I've written a few, but this is all about the group. Great job! I'm sure many enterprising authors (like me) will try to emulate this new and compelling  style of book!
