Dave Cochrum was the artist. Chris Clairmont was the writer.

Oh well I feel silly...  I had all this time thought wrong...

Guess I should have goggled it first... for the Wiki...

Claremont introduced new supporting characters to the X-Men series including Moira MacTaggert in issue #96[20] and Lilandra Neramani in #97.[21] Jean Grey a.k.a. Marvel Girl, one of Marvel's first female heroes, underwent a huge transformation into the omnipotent Phoenix.[22] Issue #107 (Oct. 1977) saw the introduction of the Starjammers[23] as well as the departure of artist Dave Cockrum. Claremont began his collaboration with artist John Byrne in the following issue.

Looks like I fail at 101 comic geekdom... how embarrassing... Sad

I thought the poll was intended as a joke, so I didn't respond. That being the case, it would be more interesting to get an illustration from Chris Claremont for the novelty, since he is not an illustrator.

Also, Dave Cockrum passed away a while back.

What's strange is you're not the first person I know who's had this wrong.

Well, Byrne draws stiff figures and swipes from himself over and over, (you could have a spot-the-pose drinking game and be drunk in minutes), and all his characters have the same handful of faces and body types, so I'll pass on him.  Haven't seen Claremont's artwork but it has to be interesting by comparison.

(Lee sucked eggs and still does. I often wonder if he has studied anatomy at all as it doesn't show in his art. Looks like he learned the human body from comic books. Not a good thing.)

I'll take Cockrum.

Well, Claremont's not an artist, so there's hardly any comparison there.

I guess different strokes and all.  To me Byrne gets an A and Lee an A-, while Cockrum's more a D+.  I do agree that all Byrne's female faces are identical, and I think he was far better back in the day (now his stuff seems more rushed and sketchy).

My first issue of the X-Men was #146, and I remember liking the way Cockrum drew Angel and Nightcrawler in particular at the time. As I started buying back issues soon afterward, I remember thinking at first that Byrne's renditions of those two characters seemed unusually angular. That's no longer my impression, but it was how I felt 35 years ago.

One of the dividing lines between Byrne and Perez, for example, is that Byrne has relied on more detectable "templates" when drawing characters. Jean Grey and Wasp and Invisible Girl look about the same, just with different hair colors/styles. Aurora broke from this mold. (But is it just me, or does Byrne's Aururo look like Daphne from Scooby Doo died her hair black?)

We both started around the same time, polarboy.  The first X-Men comic I purchased when it was on newsstands was #150, also by Cockrum.

I enjoyed reading that issue, with Cyclops free of his optic-blasts and the merry mutants left relying on their skills instead of their powers.

Oh wow.  My first X-men was #149.

As for artist - give me Alan Davis.  I prefer thick, bold lines.  He made me fall in love with Rachel as the Phoenix.  And he gave Kurt the sex appeal he is often described as having but rarely drawn showing off.
