Neither...Claremont is awful and repetitious. All his characters speak/think the same way in the same phrases.  And in his later years he couldn't resolve a story to save his life. Byrne, on the other hand, seems to have a desperate need to prove how clever he is, even if it means running roughshod over prior stories by other writers.

How about we get a good writer like Roger Stern instead?

While the Byrne/Claremont X-Men run is one of my favorite series of comic books, I have to agree with Matt that Claremont is absolutely awful.

He's so bad that - recently - I found myself throwing up in my mouth when I tried to read his latest X-Men.  He just regurgitates the same bad clichés ("the focused totality" of Psylocke's psychic powers", "with a speed that belied his massive bulk", "I'm the best there is at what I do!", etc., etc.) [You can see these referenced on Claremont's TV Tropes page]  It was so bad I had to immediately cancel the title.

I'm with Matt on neither.

I'm still impressed with Busiek and Brubaker. Kurt tends to set the bar extremely high, and Ed can make even outright crap entertaining (Time bullets anyone?).
