A Tale Fire and Ice

A solar flare touched down in the Congo.  The jet of plasma incinerates everything for miles.  Fortunately it was a sparsely populated area.  The heat was so intense that everything was reduced to ashes, and the ashes were burnt to glass.
A reporter Rajah Jones was caught up in the events.  She found Apex, of the Top Five, burnt nearly to death.  The heat from his body was melting even the earth into lava.   Before he passed out he whispered, “Surtur has come.”

The world governments put the news on black out.  All that the world new was that a solar flare started a fire.   Surtur began to walk due north.   He was intercepted by Peacekeeper.     The super hero was defeated by the fire giant’s sword.   Next came Captain Atlas.

The earth’s mightiest hero was beaten down and left for dead.   So far he has been left in a boiling crater of molten rock.  He is still too hot to approach.
With the heaviest of hitters beaten, another direction was tried.   Doc Thunder and the Mighty Seven studied the creature.  Scientists from all over the globe determined that Surtur is a walking 100 foot tall star!   How does he retain his shape?  Something doesn’t add up.

The Russian have declared that they will launch a preemptive strike when he reaches an uninhabited area of the Sahara.   So the clock is ticking.
The NSA pulls together a collection of thinkers to brainstorm.  The fore most occult specialist in government, Sally Nile, informed the assemblage that Surtur is a primordial force of destruction.   He cannot be reasoned with, negotiated with, or defeated.   He plans to plunge his sword into the North Pole and destroy the earth.
This did not sit well with anyone.

Around the room suggestions were offered.   Harold Krogan, aka Haywire, suggested using Thrym’s axe.  All eyes turned on him.    Rond Thursgood, the head of Norse Mythology at the university of Oslo, and rumor has it an actual mythological dwarf, said this might work.
He said that Thrym was the embodiment of Entropy and Surtur the embodiment of Order.  One Ice one Fire.   They may just cancel each other out.   The only problem, Mindgames sent Thrym’s axe into space in the Orb’s ship.

Singularity and Sleetstorm figured that the ship would be just inside the orbit of Neptune by now.  Airforce General Simms offered a captured Moevian scout ship to anyone brave enough to fly it.
Six heroes volunteered; Skip Tracer, Haywire, Shimmer, Honeybadger, and pilots Sleetstorm and Singularity.
They launched and all systems worked.  They flew for nearly a day when they were captured by a Moevian cruiser.

They over rode the scout’s controls and boarded.  The heroes easily defeated the Moevians.   They tried to send in a giant alien brute, but the six rushed out and fought off the creature AND the 20 Moevian’s in the dock.
The leaders responded by opening the airlock.  The heroes made it to their ship which was ejected into space.   However the controls were still not responding.

They saw from the cockpit window that a missile was launched heading directly towards them.

Starting thinking that our characters aren't really superheros but little kids playing pretend. Just imagine a bunch of 5 year olds(?) in a room with a giant red doll or stuffed animal on top of a pile of toys. 'He's burning everthing, we need to stop him'. 'How, he's too strong?' 'I know, the ice axe, but we sent it to space.' 'Oh yeah, we have to get it.' Then they pretend to fly in space when they get attacked by imaginary aliens. Then an actual kitten comes near. You can hear the cries of 'Kitty!', when one of them, a little girl, runs up and plays with it. 'She's stopping the giant alien, we can beat them.' They continue playing until it's time to leave, all happy to see their friends.

This story is about to go from cute to dark, so don't continue if you don't want to be emotionally compromised.

So the reason they play together is because they are all in the same pediatric rehabilitation. They are all ill from different diseases. And their superheros are based on them, and their sickness. I did think of a real condition for every kid which is possible and somewhat matches, but I won't say it here. If someone in the group wants to know it, I'll tell them for their character only. As example, my character, Sleetstorm, is actually a little boy with a condition (not saying what) that requires treatment several times a week. Afterwards it makes him feel cold. He doesn't like the cold but knows it means he's getting better.  And like many kids, he gets a treat for being well behaved. It would be ice cream but he can't have dairy. So he gets a snow cone instead. Of course he doesn't eat it right away, too cold, but saves it for later. Plus he likes it when it melts a bit. All the melted ice and syrup mixed together is like soda. When he started going to the rehab and playing superheroes, he picked ice powers, because cold means getting better / stronger. While playing he gets hungry and eats the snow cone, which he tries to share but it's mostly melted by then. That's why Sleetstorm likes making snow cones, to share with his friends.

P.S. the cat is a therapy pet to help the kids with stress / keep clam.

They looked out of the view screen to see a huge, red, hand grab the missile.

They were sheilded from the explosion by Red Giant, a metahuman they came to learn was one of The Astro Irregulars, the surivivors of The Gilgamesh, long thought lost in space.

Red Giant was mortally wounded by the blast and their ship was severly damaged.

Next thing they knew a woman materialized into their ship.  She called herself Anomolie. She was also an Astro Irregular.  She boosted the ship's power and brough them closer to where Thrymm's axe should be.

They found that The Orb's ship was captured by a Moveian base ship, and the entire ship was frozen solild.  They found that the nearly omnipotent Anomoly grew more unstable and more incoherient the more she used her powers.  Warned by the Alpha Centurian, another Astro Irregular, that she already used too much of her power and feared teh consquences if she was to use any more.

Alpha Centurian used his stellar powers to heat the ship so they could board the Movian ship.  Skip Tracer and Haywire stayed to protect their shuttle.

Inside Will Powers, Singularity, Sleetstorm and Honey Badger fought off frozen zombie Movians, strange blob like creatures, and prehensile brain alien.

They Honey Badger lost her temper, and ripped her own DNA a few links.  She learned she can channel her rage and become stronger, tougher, but dumber.  This proved handy battling the aleins.

Alpha Centurian cut into the ORB's craft, and Will Powers grabbed Thrymm's axe once again.   They fled to the outside of the ship to the saftey of their own shuttle.

But it was gone....

Meanwhile  Haywire and Skip Tracer fought off a few invading Movian scouts.  This lead them away from the massive base ship.

Their space battle led them dangerously close to a rough comet.  The great ball of ice and methane started to crack.   It was an ancient egg, and the newly born creature called itself  Yigg Snorttle Yigg.  It was a spherical creature with four massive tentacles and a giant central eye.  It imprinted on Haywire and smashed more Movian ships.

The creature towed their shuttle back to their friends, and the Alpha Centurion towed the Metaforce back to Earth.

Following the destruction of Surtur was easy.   The primordial being left a path of lava, glass, and fire.

Alpha Centurion and Singularty launced Will Powers, still weidling Thrymm's axe at Surtur.

And Sutur did something he never did before.  He noticed something...

The fire giant turned and swung his sword.

The next thing the heroes remember was waking up in a hospital.  Everyone was covered in radiation burns and massive blunt force trauma.   Two things were obvious;  Sutur, his sword and Thrymm's axe were destroyed.

And Will Powers was killed.  Total destruction.
