She was a walking contradiction, disparate parts coming together to form an unlikely whole.  Forensics major, gymnastics scholarship.  Hated the attention, loved the competition.  Incredibly charming, often detached.  It was all a means to an end for her, a way to keep driving forward with a single-minded intensity that left more than one person washed up and broken in the wake of her ambition.  Everything was planned, everything carefully orchestrated to maneuver her into the best position for the next move.

It really should have been no surprise when CHESS approached her.

CHESS became her life, attaining the rank of Pawn through her work in her precinct’s forensics department. Her specialty became misdirection, always on alert for a CHESS tag found in a crime scene so she could make sure the evidence told the story they needed.  The work suited her, maintaining an impeccable face to the rest of her colleagues while she worked to her own ends under the table.  With that, she was probably the least prepared when CHESS dissolved, leaving her at loose ends.

The next step was probably the hardest.  The top brass had all vanished, gone to live new lives under new cover.  She didn’t have that luxury, but she did have the one final cover she could use – normalcy.  For the first time in her life, she tried to just be normal.  No games, no manipulation, just life.  Worked hard at her job for the sake of the job, got engaged to a man who worked with kids and loved to cook.

It almost worked.

When she got the call, it was two in the morning.  Antonio had been killed, thrown off a building by a teenager high on Cape when he was trying to talk him down from the ledge.  She reacted appropriately to the authorities, sobbing and reaching for him when she went to identify the body, but inside, that careful life was already shattering into jagged shards.  She was almost there!  She was almost out!    But it looks like normalcy just was never in the cards for her after all.

She immediately started hunting the source of the drug that got her fiancé killed, her nights spent on rooftops as she chases down lead after lead.  If that’s how this is going to be played, fine.  It’s her game, now.  And sooner or later, it’s going to be Checkmate.
