The Fantastic Four: Super Heroes, explorers, and a family. When written right, they are the best comics have to offer. When Tom Defalco writes them, they suck. By far my favorite super hero comic, team, and characters. Without this comic, super hero comics may have gone out to pasture decades ago.
The Avengers: They are the standard for all other super teams, comic book wise and role playing wise. I am sure the teams you guys play at home are somewhat modelled after this team. You even pick your teammates based on the Avenger's line up. You look for the heavy hitter, the strategist, the energy projector the wild card. The Avengers did it first. Hell, I bet your team has a big round table with chairs with your symbols on them.
The Justice League: Come on, this team is on everyone's list. If it isn't, erase the Champions and put this one on. This team is as close to a modern day Olympians as you are going to get. And it should always be the big seven, with a few b listers tossed in. THAT is the Justice League. Vixen is a fine character, but she does not make the League the league, Superman and Green Lantern do that.
X Men: From 94 to about 200 this team was firing on all cylindars. Great art, great characterisation, the best costumes to date and surpises and things out of left field. Then all they did was fight amongst themselves and never reslove a plot thread.
The Nobles: From the Excellent comic Noble Causes: Imagine a disfunctional Fantastic Four. A great read about a super family with secrets upon secrets. Affairs, time travel, super science and bastard children all while saving the earth. Too bad the writer got a better job in television.
SHEILD This is the prototype super spy agency. From them we get CHESS, and I am sure CHESS is a big deal in all our games.
The Marvel Family: Three teenagers given the powers of the gods. They have an extradimensional home with access to all time and space, AND a device that allows them to see anyware. This is awsome! Too bad DC hasn't caught on how awsome this is. Hell, they should let me write this team.
Teen Titans: A team of side kicks is a cool idea. And when Marv and George were at the wheel they could do no wrong. It was the best selling comic along with the X men during my teen years, and it hit its decline with the introduction of Jericho, the boy no one knew what to do with.
The Legion of Super Heroes: The Avengers meets Star Trek. Such a great concept it succeeds even though DC has tried to assassinate them time and time again. This is the third comic in the Teen Titans/X Men/ Triumvirate. Don't believe me, check out how many people still talk about the Great Darkness Saga.
The Justice Society: There is something about the brown pants, yellow shirt on the Atom with the lavendar cape and green pants on the Green Lantern. Horribly ugly costumes and ill defined powers and yet it works. The first super team still holds a place in my heart. I hope DC finally lets them go with some semblence of dignity.
