I just bought the boardgame Arkham Horror.   I am giving an open invite to anyone who wants to come  next Friday to play.   Oni, its a board game so if your wife and daughter want to come, its ok.  Elle will play too.

Mike, you and the future Mrs Strong are also invited.

You too Paul, kids, wife  and everything!  No dog, as my cats will eat him.

I bought all the minis for this game  but alas, some key monsters have not been made in minature.  So  we will use the cardboard counters for them if they come up.

I spent alot of money on this game, but I am geeking out over it, so its cool.  I hope this isn't just a one time thing, as there are a few expansion packs.

One, The Dunwhich Horror Expansion,  has a whole new board, that you play.   You add a location to the old board which is a trainstation and then you go to the other board.  How imaginative is that?

Just played a game with Oni's clan ( the wife and offspring).   My wife and I made chili for the nights horrific festivities.    It was fun, but we called it a night when my character was devoured by a mi go.  Ithaqua was only a few gates  from being awaken, so maybe it was for the best.

Yes a good time was had by all.  Except for the Shoggoth that became my pet when I was able to take one from the board  Smiley  Mister Shoggoth was NOT a happy monster.

It's a long game though.  We started about 7:30 and stopped at 11:30 and it wasn't even close to being finished.

Oni and I just finished playing.   We closed all the gates, but we then drew another mythos card, and a new gate appeared.  It all went to hell after that.

Monsters, monsters, monsters.  We couldn't keep up.

We ended up throwing in the towel.

BUT,  I just re read the rules.  We won the game when the last gate was closed.  So there is that.  Lets pretend that  everything after that was a hallucination, cause when we closed the gate, we both ended up insane.

Why are even my Characters in a Board Game Insane???

John,

Should we use this thread to post Strategy ideas and things we picked up on during play???

Like becoming a Deputy for one as well as spreading the characters out around the board to get to the gates quicker. Things like that.

Ok  Things I re read.

Everytime the Terror Level increases, all the monsters in the Outskirts return to the "monster cup."

If a gate suddenly opens under and investigator, they fall through it ( before being attacked by what ever monster may apear) and are delayed in the other world.

There can only be one deputy at a time, for for there to be another deputy,  the current one needs to die to free up that card.  That card can not be lost  when Lost in Time and Space and injured or etc...

I just finished playing a solo game.  I picked a good invesitgator, drew a rifle and was kicking monster ass.  I became the deputy and was going about closing gates and collecting monster trophies when the game got mad at me.
I drew a card that pretty much made two gates open per turn instead of one, and it went down hill fast after that.  I was finally devoured by Nyarlothotep.

There is a house rule on the Arkham Forum that I like.   Everyone, including the creators of the game, agree that spells are too weak.  So they suggest that you only pay the sanity penalty if you fail to cast the spell.

I think that works well.

A fun game was had.   Of course we were all devoured by the Great Old One, but before that, we managed to kill the Dunwich Horror, and fight off a crap load of monsters.

We came up with a house rule on the fly, that makes some sense.

If you join the Sheldon Gang, then  when you have an encounter with them, they don't beat up up ( unless you try to steal a shot gun).

I saw another group's house rule, and I think it has merit.  Jimmy, since you are the only one who has played this game other than me, tell me what you think.

If you find a spell book ( something we all seem to not use, and just give them up when the game calls for us to loose something) instead of giving you a one shot or sometimes two shot spell,  you can always use that spell, as long as you have that book?  It makes sense.

You still lose sanity for reading the book, that fits in with Lovecraft, but the pay off is that you can cast the spells it gives you when ever you need them.  And tied in with the other house rule that spells only affect your sanity if you fail to cast them,  this makes the tomes something you would want, rather than something you discard at the first chance.

It makes sense. They seemed more like Scrolls when you just used them and then tossed them back in the pile.

Hey what's a little Sanity loss???

I get it.  And it's true... our pets are judging us and have come to the conclusion, us humans are quite stupid.  However, since you have dogs, they might just be thinking... "they're alright, these humans things."

Our cats however think, "silly humans.  Feed us, house us, scoop our poop and let us finish our explorations here on this little planet called Earth."

I just re read the rules, some minor things we were doing wrong.

If you get an injury or madness card instead of going to zero stamina/sanity you still go to the hospital or asylum.   The advantage is you don't loose half your stuff and you get healed to max.

Second thing, if you get arrested, you also lose half your money.

Third, if you go insane or uncounsious you lose have your items, AND clues, rounded down.  So if you have five things, discard two.

Played a game with Oni and Stormdance.  Fun and madness was had by all.

We had a good plan, and all was working out well, untill it didn't.   The Great Old One rose really quick and devoured us all.

Ok  I printed up some spell books  and we tried them out. I like them better than the cards.  But I only printed up one of each, so the first to draw them gets the book,  each one after gets the card.

And spells cost sanity, but you get a clue token for each sanity lose due to spell casting.

Gerry and I played two games.  The first we were doing pretty good,  had things under control and sealed three gates when Abhoth awoke and ate us rather quickly.

The second game, I got my ass kicked repeatedly, got wounded, went insane while Arkham was stuck in a snow bank that limited movement.   Hastur awoke rather quick as neither of us closed any gates.  But then the unthinkable happened.  We kicked Hastur's ass and saved the world.

I had 2 unique items. both of which were magic weapons. They gave me a total of +9 to my combat roll. After taking out the minus from Hastur, I was rolling 11 dice each time.

Also, John realized he had calculated hp for the big bad previously, so they actually had less. So there wasn't as much damage to do, and while John's guy went insane, I was able to finally defeat it. Plus, he arrived real, real early. The Terror track was only on two.

Of course in the first game, my character could do nothing to Abhoth, so I died real fast

Lets play some Arkham Horror this Friday the 24th.  All are welcome.   We will use the Innsmouth Expansion, so be prepared for some Deep One invasion.   Hell, be prepared to become a Deep One!

Heads Up. If I leave the office at 5:30 instead of 7:00 and drive back home first to take care of the Beasts I figure I should make it sometime between 8PM and 8:30pm.

Mike, Jimmy and my self  teamed up against Nyarlathotep.   We used both the Dunwich Horror and Innsmouth expansions.   We also used the Lurker in the Threshold Herald.

We were doing pretty good,  but I, despite being a physical ass kicker, kept getting beaten up by monsters do to poor rolling!

The GOO woke up, devouring Mike and Jimmy right away, leaving me to fight alone.  I was kicking ass.   However, I was devoured but Nyarlothotep only had one hit point left!   So close.

The wife and I just played a fun game of Arkham Horror.   We were doing well, and all sorts of interesting cards were played.  We solved two rumors, which is amazing, and had no problems clearning off monsters.  But  El was devoured by the Lurker in the Threshold even though she didn't make a pact with him.
She drew another investigator and then we fought the great old one, Ghatanhoa.   We fought well, but succumbed to his petrifying gaze.

Oni came over and we played a two man game of Arkham Horror.

Jimmy drew Dexter Drake, and I Diana Stanley.   I started off strong, kicking monster ass and closing gates right away, while Jimmy Started off cursed and just having bad luck.

We seemed to have the monsters undercontrol, and I was closing gates, but  then the Doom track laughed at us and filled up while we were eating Roast Pork Buns.

Abhoth rose from his slumber and dissolved us into goo.      We had no chance.

Just finished up.  We played all the board expanisons, Dunwich, Innsmouth and Kingsport.  I thought it was fun.  We had a groove going, and managed to seal six gates, thus winning the game.   Poor Yig didn't have a chance.

One of my favorite games so far, as we all got to do something.     Seems like we beat it just in time, as those damn Deep Ones were one token away from calling up Yig.

I played three games with my nieces and  nephews.   We won 2 out of three.

The first I was turned into a Deep One and then set off the Great Old One to attack.  My niece's then kicked Ithiqua's ass.

The second game, with only one gate open, on my first move, I drew a card that allowed me to close a gate.  We one.   Fastest game ever.

The third game, after 6 hours of play, and my neice turning into a Deep One,  three of us were killed when Nyarlathotep awoke and then killed the remaining player.

The Horror of Arkham Horror.

My wife, daughter and I plyed last night for 4 hours. Basically until I was exhausted. We could not finish but we had all the gate matkers that Yig initiallyn had on his board removed because we permantly sealed 5 gates.

My wife was sealing gates along with me while my daughter laid waste to anything she got near. Magic word and also a few weapons like a rifle and dynamaite twice.

Everything was goimng great until my wife decided to replace some of the monster counters with tiny stuffed animals.

The Terror track was up to 8 so we were getting into trouble

Just played a game  with Oni and Jennifer, a friend of Jimmy and I from grade school that we had not seen in decades.

She battled cosmic horror,  cat dander, and Queen's parking.   We had to keep Azathoth from awakening, cause if he does, he destroys all of existence!

We sealed 5 gates,  six are needed to win, but then the sleepy fella awoke, and we all got snuffed.

Of couse things like flying monsters, snow drifts and lack of clues prevented us from being the heroes that we all know we are.

I enjoyed the game, as new cards were drawn,  the first corruption card was issued to Jimmy.  He drew some fun enounters in the Church, a place largely neglected in other games.  He was even nearly drowned by the priest, then kicked out of the place by God himself!

Jennifer was a shirtless pirate.  She played a shirtless pirate.  She, unfortunately, wore a shirt and spent a lot of time in visiting the nice inbreed hick town of Dunwich.

I had fun closing Rifts in Kingsport and I really wanted to try to get the White Ship or climb the Kingsport Head.  Maybe next time.

Hey Jimmy, I just reread about the corruption cards.  We played it wrong.

Quote:
When a player is instructed to draw a Corruption card, he or she draws the top card of the Corruption deck and places it near his or her investigator sheet. An investigator may have more than one Corruption card at a time.

Every Corruption card has an effect that is triggered whenever a particular monster movement dimension symbol appears on a mythos card during the Mythos Phase. There are two versions of every Corruption card in the deck: one with a dimension symbol on a white background and one with a dimension symbol on a black background. Effects on Corruption cards do not trigger unless both the symbol and the colored background on the Corruption card matches those of the mythos card drawn during the Mythos Phase. Triggering a Corruption card ability is not optional.

Corruption cards are resolved immediately after monster movement during step 3 of resolving a mythos card. Some Corruption cards also have passive abilities that are always in effect. For example, the card 'Endless Greed' has both a passive effect and a triggered effect. The passive effect of 'Endless Greed' (the text that appears above the monster movement dimension symbol) is always in effect as long as the investigator has that particular card.

When a gate is closed, all Corruption cards in play that match the closed gate's dimension symbol are discarded. Certain card effects may also instruct a player to discard cards off the top of the Corruption deck. Discarded Corruption cards are placed in a discard pile and are considered removed from the game. The Corruption deck is never reshuffled.

If a player is instructed to draw a Corruption card, but there are no cards available to draw, the Ancient One immediately awakens.

Good to know for next time. I don't think it made a difference in this case. Need to have players visit the Church more often.

PS.

Cthulhu and Pumpkin Juice were a HUGE Hit when I got home.

Someone is corrupting the little one I think.
