Have any of you given thought to how old age would affect a character's stats? Namely things like STR, END, AGL? I've got a few notes I jotted down at work the other day, I'll post them in a bit to see what you think.

I haven't really done it other than figure out lifespans.

I figured you add a zero to the endurance and that is the age of your last decade.  So if your endurance is 9, you will live to 90.  Then each year you roll a d20 and if you roll under a nine, you live another year.

This has never came into play, just one of those things I waste my time thinking about.

A number of games have this, but I've never done anything with it for V&V.  Most characters are younger, and for our campaign the ones that have aged quite a bit over the course of a long career usually retire.  Those that don't have alien blood or something else that would likely mitigate any negatives.

Here's the chart for AD&D (translated to V&V):

Young adult: 14 - 20 (E+1, I-1)

Mature: 21-40 (S+1, I+1)

Middle Aged: 41-60 (S-1, E-1, I+2)

Old: 61-90 (S-2, E-1, A-2, I+1)

Venerable: 91-120 (S-1, E-1, A-1, I+2)

I'm just spit balling, but at the moment I'm thinking something like this.

50-60: -1 STR, END, AGL
60-65: -1 STR, END, AGL
65-70: -1 STR, END, AGL, INT
70-75: -1 STR, END, AGL, INT
75-85: -2 STR, -1 END; AGL, INT
85-90: -2 STR, END; -1 AGL, INT
etc.

You could train to fight off the effects. Sound reasonable?

Why do you start the age modification at 50?  Golden Age and Silver Age heroes?

Are these adjustments cumulative? For example, do you lose 1 point of Strength at age 50 and then another point at 60 and another at 65, and another at 70, and then two more at 75, and then another two more at 85?

Personally I think the drop off is a little more severe... at 39 years of age it is hard to imagine me getting even close to winnning a race when I was in my twenties... physically and mentally we all hit our peak at age 25 or so... we will never have the same sense of hearing strength or healing as we are capable of when we are in our early 20's... while wisdom does not go down as you age, int does.  you think slower as you get older but that would not be noticible until you are much older..

So I would say that no stat changes until 30 and then drop  point of str agi end every 5 years and one point of int every 10 years.   Training can reverse this as people will gain levels naturally if they work at it.

I think most men strength peaks in their thirties. Matter of fact many world powerlifting records are set by men of about forty years of age ... and while it's not the same thing I am pretty sure this same trend applies to bodybuilders.

Natures way of making up for a reduced level in speed and reflexes I suppose Smiley

On a side note ... and I'm sure Dom might have a better knowledge of this than I do, but I'm pretty sure a large portion your top special op teams are also in their thirties. This obviously is a matter of experience but I think in V&V could relate to a Charisma/Cool/Willpower bonus.

Just a thought

I know professional atheletes hit their peak at around the age of 30.

As far as doing penalties for V&V, I think it's important to remember that we're simulating comics.  And so, even though it's not very realistic at all, characters in their 40's (and sometimes even their 50's) don't seem to have any appreciable decline.

So I guess it comes down to whether you want to be more 'realistic' or not for supers.

So true. I say no penalties for supers, including self-trained heroes like Batman. Penalties should happen only when heroes officially retire and get out of the game.

Or just have them apply to NPCs.

I am off the opinion that  player characters shouldn't be affected to aging.   This is due to their constant training.

BUT if the GM wants to  for story reasons, go ahead.
