Four-Color Powers

This thread is meant for powers that don't make a lot of sense under scrutiny but that have appeared a lot in cartoons or perhaps elsewhere.

Speed Bonus Device: The grappling line allows the character to swing through the air at the usual speed of 1d10 x 10" per turn. But the grappling line doesn't actually have to make contact with anything to work. The character just has to throw the line upward toward the sky to swing from Point A to Point B.

Here is a one-shot invention popularized mainly by Scooby Doo and Mission:Impossible ...

Rubber Mask: The invented mask has the exact facial appearance a specific individual. The disguise works even of the person wearing the mask is the opposite sex or up to 50+ lbs. larger or smaller than the real individual. The person wearing the mask can even convincingly imitate the voice of the real individual.

And another idea, best known from the 1960s live-action Batman TV series ...

Natural Weaponry: In addition to the typical HTH bonus, this skill includes a Sonic carrier attack for an additional 1d12 damage accompanied by a sound effect like KA-POW or BAM! or ZAP!

To simulate action movies where an attack is so awesome it gets multiple shots from different views (I would attach this as a bonus power to natural weaponry).

Awesome Attack of Repetition:  When the character rolls maximum damage on their melee attack, they get to repeat the damage roll and add the damage together.  If the repeat roll is max damage as well, repeat the process. Continue repeating until max damage is not rolled.

Heightened Senses (variation): A character with this power automatically detects the location of any unoccupied telephone booth, restroom stall, or similar vestibule within a radius equal to the character's ground movement rate x 2. Additionally, the character is effectively undetectable to others while entering and changing into costume within this confined space.

Here's another invention based on the live-action Batman TV series ...

Wardrobe Poles: Sliding down one of these poles automatically changes the hero from street/civilian clothes into the appropriate superhero costume. Note: If other people such as nosy neighbors or criminal intruders accidentally slide down the pole by mistake, they remain in their ordinary clothes and do not change into costume.

Here's one. I won't write it up as fancy as the examples above but:

Closed Captioning of the Mind: When someone with mind control, or similar mind altering power, successfully hits there is a percent chance that anything the subject is thinking will show up in caption bubbles above his/her head for all to see.  This includes how they are planning to attack etc. so the proper pluses and minuses should be applied as seen fit by the GM. The caption bubbles are invisible to the subject only.

Here's one inspired by many comics, cartoons, and movies. As a rule of thumb, only supervillains can use this power.

Psionics: Attacks as Mind Control, radius = Charisma. Everyone effected within earshot loses all actions for the next 15 phases or until the end of the turn (whichever comes first) so long as the villain speaks honestly and accurately about his origin story (including a his secret identity or a relevant weakness) or discloses his master plan (including any significant hole in the plan). PR = O.

Inspired by everyone from Dagwood to Shaggy to Jughead ...

Body Power: The character can consume large amounts of even semi-edible food very quickly. Requires one action plus 1" per every pound of food eaten. PR = 1 per pound consumed.

Characters with this ability often eat until fatigued.

These are a lot of fun!

Speed Bonus: The character can get instantaneously from one place to another (within their ground movement rate), but before they do, for approximately 5 phases, there is a circular swirl of wind-like air that coalesces around their legs/feet, accompanied by a drum-like sound effect.

Inspired by the Bat Signal ....

Special Weapon: Insignia Spotlight. This upturned spotlight projects the hero's insignia on clouds. Turning on the light coincidentally activates a specialized Weather Control Device that ensures there are cloudy weather conditions outdoors.

Inspired by Wile E. Coyote ...

Willpower B: The character's power of concentration (or rather preoccupation) is so strong that it allows him to ignore gravity by unintentionally stepping off a cliff/ledge and yet continuing to walk horizontally across the air at ground movement rate. A successful Det. Danger roll between turns alerts the character that there is no solid ground beneath his feet and causes him to fall. PR = 0.

Body Power: The character can maintain her or his balance while striking uber-exaggerated sexually provocative poses that distort their body in bizarrely convoluted ways. PR = 0.

The Animated Servant that is an actual servant. For instance ...

Animated Servant A: Rosie the robot maid from the Jetsons or the J.A.R.V.I.S. personal assistant to Tony Stark in the Iron Man films.

Animated Servant B: The ghost of butler Alfred Pennyworth in Superman & Batman Generations. (Lurch, the butler from the Addams Family, might count too.)

Mutant Power: The character has an inexplicable ability to be in the right place at the right time (or the wrong place at the wrong time) to gain a new set of powers every week.

Think Jimmy Olsen in the Silver Age.

Speed Bonus (variation): The character has heightened typing skills, adding d10 times 10 words per minute to her or his typing speed.

This skill was commonplace among Golden Age heroines who worked as secretaries during the day, as well as all the super-types with newspaper careers.

Body Power (Hot Headed): Requires one action to activate when angry. As the character's face turns fiery red and steam emits from his ears, the character defends as Flame Power against any attacks to the character's head. PR = 1 to activate.

These are great, Baretta.  Excellent summaries of so many 'old skool' tropes and abilities seen in the comics of yesteryear (or TV shows and the like).

Reminds me of what one of my players used to do (from our V&V high school days).  He used to list himself occasionally, giving himself a whole range of Powers and Weaknesses with really mundane things, like:

Body Power: Can burp for a really long time

or

Vulnerability: Toes susceptible to Athlete's Foot

or similar (I don't honestly remember any of them, but he had something like 8-10 of them).

Special Weapon: Cigar. By spending one action per turn to keep the lit cigar in his mouth, the character defends as Willpower. PR = 0.

Body Power: Baldness. Lack of hair on the top of his or her head gives the character Heightened Intelligence or Telepathy or other Psionics.

Body Power: Bouncing. Defends as Stretching Powers, PR = 1 per use. Bouncing allows the character to add [Strength + Endurance] x 3 inches to their ground movement rate, and bounce a height = to Strength inches. Takes no damage from falls.

Transformation: Weaker Form. The character can appear at times and from certain angles to have pointed ears or other benign monster-like or animal-like physical features (depending on the artist who might be drawing the character at the time).

Gotta agree.  It's nice to see actual game mechanics for villain monologuing!  The Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game has a way of incorporating them as well (though not as smooth as the above).

Body Power: Fastest Man Alive. The character holds the title of the the fastest person in the campaign universe. Even if someone else's running or flying speed increases through training or an invention, the character with the power "fastest man alive" automatically ties the challenger in any race.
