Nokter the Despised founded the Undying Faith during the height of the power and splendor of Mu. The Ancient Worlds were harsh places to live, especially for those forbidden to learn the Language of Creation.  Nokter promised a life of strength.  He promised freedom from death.  He promised that the faithful would always survive.   His zeal and his new god, Orcus, performed miracles.  He could heal the wounded and he could even raise the dead. But unlike the haughty Magi, he promised to share the secrets he learned.
People flocked to hear him speak.  His power and influence grew.   The magicians of Mu had to accept him into the council of the wise.  The common man was now represented.  It seemed that a new era was on the cusp.  That is, until the plague came.

When whole families were destroyed from sickness, the people turned on Nokter.   He promised them undying life.   Clearly this was a lie.   Nokter had to flee and hide or the wraith of the people would surely be his undoing.

He hid in a sewer for three days.   In total darkness, eating only offal, Nokter was visited by his god.  Orcus spoke to him from the corpse of a bloated rat.   The rat told him how to finally achieve undying life.    And with that, the first life of Nokter ended.

His body was found by a simple cleaner.  He didn’t recognize the corpse.  The cleaner was a simple man, a good man.  A man who loved and feared the old gods.  He gathered his family and they pulled the body from the waters and cleaned it.   They dressed it in yellow, as was the custom, and buried the body in a field.

But Nokter knew secrets.  He knew how to arise again, with a second, undying life.  He tore himself from the ground.  He sought out his followers and they saw that he was undying.  They saw that he could not get sick.  They saw he could be pierced by brass swords.  They saw he could float.   They begged his forgiveness for their lack of faith.  And Nokter forgave them.

In a mass during the next new moon, during the blackest of night, Nokter called forth Orcus.   And the people screamed in terror.  Orcus took the form of a hoard of locus.   Each faithful, as they screamed, took into their mouths, and into their throats, and down into their bellies, their new god Orcus.  And so ended the first life of the faithful.

The Faithful rose three days later, and screamed.  They raged.  The pain of rebirth drove many into madness.    And in their madness they flew into the sky.  Many burnt when they flew into the east and into the rising sun.   Many tore apart their neighbors as they raged in pain.   Many fled to parts unknown.

Those that survived cursed Nokter.  They were now undying.  They were free of plagues.  They were free of kings and Magi.  But they were enslaved by thirst and rage.    They thirsted for blood.

The good people of Mu shunned the Undying.   They called them the cursed.  The despised.  They build wards to keep them away.  They burnt pyres to light up the night.   They buried the idols of the new god Orcus and punished any who offered him praise.   The Undying scattered to uncivilized lands.   Always hungry always in pain, and forbidden to die.  The name of Nokter became anathema.  The name of Nokter could cause milk to sour and cheese to spoil.  The undying still hide, rage and feed, forever, without end.
