It's a great story seed, but it outlines why I think iflscience is generally full of $#!+. It's no great mystery as to what happened, the ships were scavenged by grave robbers looking for cheap pre-trinity steel. They eventually get to that point, but they had to have a click-bait headline (which has been all over social media).
