Lucy Douglas* was an "ordinary" teenage girl who excelled in school.  She also excelled at fencing because her mother had insisted she take lessons as far back as she could remember.  She was friends with nearly everyone she met (except a few jealous rivals here and there.)  She was easy to talk to and always seemed to know which boy liked which girl.  She could even tell a friend how to approach a particular boy they were interested in.  She was the ultimate matchmaker!

And then one day she met a strange man at the library (not her college dorm; that's just creepy.)  He introduced himself as Mr. Noman.  She was impressed with his knowledge of the arcane and he even offered to do a reading for her with his Tarot cards.  As he laid out the cards, he expressed amazement at her potential and informed her that she had great powers!?  Fascinated in spite of herself, she accepted his offer to explore her potential.  Over the next few weeks, he would meet her in the library and perform a series of tests (think: Ghostbusters at the beginning of the movie with Bill Murray and the hot chick.)  Her busy schedule only allowed her to see him once a week, but her success with the tests he gave her caused them both to realize that she must have psychic abilities!?  Upon realizing this, Lucy asked Mr. Noman if it would be possible to use her powers for the greater good...?  After a moment's thought, Mr. Noman suggested that it would certainly be possible but only if she were to train with a heavier weapon.

At no time did it occur to Lucy to scan his thoughts or perform a Mind Probe.  After all, he was helping her!  Right...?
