Published Hero Stats: Deconstructed
Nov 16th, 2009 at 10:03pm
Print Post
As a point of comparison, I decided to deconstruct the published stats for 23 costumed V&V heroes who are presented as peers and likely allies to the player characters. These include the Crusaders (as they first appeared in the Crisis module), new heroes from the V&V comic book, the heroes from the Dragon magazine ads, the Rookies (Pre-Emptive Strike), the Valiants (Great Iridium Con), Rising Sun (In Search for the Sensei), and the heroes from Devil's Domain.

This sample does not include NPC heroes designed to potentially battle the player characters, or characters who were created as sidekicks, or NPCs with powers who do not identify as costumed heroes.

WEIGHT
Females
110 lbs. Hummingbird
120 lbs. Dreamweaver
120 lbs. Telecom
130 lbs. Evergreen
130 lbs. Kali
130 lbs. Serena
AVERAGE: 123 lbs. (compared with the 125 lbs. for a randomly generated female, using 5d4 x10)

Males
120 lbs. Nomad
130 lbs. Lightning-Fist
130 lbs. Rising Sun
140 lbs. Epsilon
145 lbs. Shatterman
140 lbs. Imperial
150 lbs. Laserfire
160 lbs. Magnetor
160 lbs. Powerpath
170 lbs. Enforcer
170 lbs. Katana
170 lbs. Skyhawk
180 lbs. Manta-Man
180 lbs. (x 4 = 720 lbs. with robotic body) Meganaut
190 lbs. Blizzard
200 lbs. Condor
220 lbs. Conductor
AVERAGE: 162 lbs. (compared with the 175 lbs. for a randomly generated male, using 5d6 x10)

HIT POINTS
3. Rising Sun
3. Serena
4. Powerpath
7. Nomad
8. Katana
8. Laserfire
9. Kali
9. Magnetor
11. Dreamweaver
11. Evergreen
12. Telecom
13. Enforcer
13. Blizzard
16. Manta-Man
18. Shatterman
19. Skyhawk
20. Epsilon
20. Hummingbird
23. Condor
24. Lightning-Fist
47. Imperial
91. Conductor
125. Meganaut
AVERAGE HIT POINTS: just above 22
  • Drop the two lowest and two highest numbers. AVERAGE HITS: just above 15
  • Drop the three lowest and three highest numbers. AVERAGE HITS: just above 14

I've deconstructed the SEAIC stats to show how the scores would appear without modifications due to weight, heightened powers, reduced weaknesses, and adjustments based on wings and animal/plant powers.

Because the average hero in this sample is just above 3rd level (enough to raise two SEAI stats one point), I rounded down those scores when displaying averages. That way the "average" number in those rows approximates the average hero's stats as they would appear at first level, before determining super powers.

These next two characters have super skills/powers but are introduced as trainees in need of the player-characters' protection (not as heroic equals).

Sin-Ting Kenokogi, 15-year-old daughter (Search for the Sensei)
Weight: 100 lbs.
Strength: 11
Endurance: 9 (H. + 7 = 16)
Agility: 10 (Mod. + 2 = 12)
Intelligence: 10
Charisma: 13 (2nd level)
Hit Points: 5

Wonder Boy, 13-years-old (Super-Crooks & Criminals)
Weight: 95 lbs.
Strength: 8
Endurance: 7
Agility: 6 (Ag. Mod. + 2 = 8)
Intelligence: 11
Charisma: 16 (1st level)
Hit Points: 1

The Secret in the Swamp did not publish stats for John Croaker, the 13-year-old mutant who is resistant to mind control (and who might become a superhero when he is older and his psionic abilities develop).

Yes, very good stuff, PB!

Interesting that the average of each of the physical basic characteristics is 12, while the average of both of the mental (social/spiritual/non-physical) ones is 14.

Yes, I noticed that as well. It appears to echo a point of view that the game expects superheroes to think intelligently and act with good intentions (independent of heightened ability mods). Cerebral stats may be more important than physique in determining who becomes a superhero.

A SPOILER ALERT may be in order, as this next selection of 23 characters includes good/neutral super-powered characters who are brainwashed or under orders to attack the player-characters in published adventures (including the Crimson Guard and the heroes of Syn Tech), as well as good-aligned characters who act like villains, evil-characters who were once good heroes (and now are villains), and non-costumed good/neutral NPCs with super powers who could assist the player-characters from several published sourcebooks and adventures.

This sample of arms-length allies and potential opponents is tougher than the peer-heroes in the initial post. They average 4th level, with more hit points than the original group, and average 13 (instead of 12) in their deconstructed SEA scores. Their un-powered IC scores average to 14 (like the original sample).

polarboy,

If you ever find the time, it would be really cool if you could post a list of ALL the "superheroes" that are shown from the various published sources (at least the 2nd Edition ones).

In other words, even the ones that we only know names for (no stats).

Thanks so much for compiling this stuff all the time!

Do you mean like the heroes Magnetic Man, Raven, Avenger, Micro Girl and Morningstar from Death Duel with the Destroyers? That kind of stuff?

Here is some information I've gathered about unpictured tertiary characters named within the body text of many published materials.

Freedom Eagle: the first superhero (now deceased), according to the write-ups for Shatterman and Condor in the V&V comic. His powers included Armor B (ADR 48), Natural Weaponry Device: +3 to hit, +6 damage, Heightened Strength Device + 12, Wings Device (88 mph), and Heightened Senses Device: x4 det. hidden/danger.

Silver Shrike: a flying hero with an anti-gravity belt. Died fighting two burglars. One of the burglars also died. The other became the villain Blackjack (Super-Crooks).

Diana Glenn: the Psychic who assisted police and appeared on the shows "That's Amazing" and "Do You Believe?" She died as a result of the villain Oracle (Super-Crooks).

Two superheroes were murdered by Headhunter. He wears their skulls on his belt (Most Wanted Vol. 3).
Masher: Vigilante with Heightened Strength B (+25) and Heightened Endurance B x2 (+42).
Pulsar: Vigilante with Power Blast, Flight, and Invisibility.

Cyberwoman: the deceased wife of the hero Epsilon (Great Iridium Con).

The hero Epislon (character sheet in Great Iridium Con) once belonged to The Ring of Saturn (p. 18). Epsilon's former associates included: Carver, Actor, Masochist, Corona, and Felix (Great Iridium Con, p. 4).

Mythryl: a dimension-hopping being who is said to have inspired tales of Merlin. Discovered the Primevil dimension later used as a prison (Pre-Emptive Strike, p. 11).

Excalibur: a British weather-controller during WWII. He's the father of the villain Stormlord (There's a Crisis at Crusader Citadel). He may be the hero pictured on pp. 19-20 of the rules.

Tiger Man: pocketed $10,000 for a television commercial promoting Jungle Life After Shave (revised rulebook, p. 39)

The Pentacle Plot references two heroes as examples, to illustrate combat dynamics (p. 11).
Power Guy:  Power Blast, and a Strength, Endurance, and Intelligence over twenty.
The Ghoul: Flame Powers, flight, and a Strength of twenty-plus.

fyi, The character on pp. 19-20 of the 2nd edition rules also appears on p. 32, where he's called "Stormy."

Here's another unpictured hero, another heroic casualty.

Gravitron: a Soviet hero with gravity powers who dies in Part One of Devil's Domain.

No problem at all - just the list you added above is a huge help!   Cheesy

My son was recently asking what other "super hero teams" are in our campaign, and it's something I've been meaning to do (compile a list of who's out there in our world).  We've used most of the ones shown in the published modules, so for example I know that in Canada there's the Crimson Guard (from This Empress Earth).

The lists above will help out a lot in allowing me to figure out who else is out there.  So thanks to all (especially polarboy) for all the helpful lists!    Smiley

Majestic,
Do you mean like the heroes Magnetic Man, Raven, Avenger, Micro Girl and Morningstar from Death Duel with the Destroyers? That kind of stuff?

Yeah, that's what I was meaning.  I remember the "Force" modules specifically (both FORCE and Assassin) showing us four different heroes (they may not have given them names, but I think we went with Archangel, Knight, etc.) in a lot of the drawings within the adventure itself.  They even often gave you markers of these characters.

With all of polarboys wonderful lists, I was wondering if he had compiled a list of these characters too.

One more thing: I want to apologize to polarboy for miscommunicating my earlier intent.

My intention was to see if - in his many thorough and accurate research/compilations - he had formulated a list of the "superhero" (i.e., non-adversary) characters shown in the published supplements.  Unfortunately, I think it came across like I was expecting him to do my own personal research for me.

So for that I apologize.  I appreciate all the hard work he's done and the efforts he's taken to share all of that info with us here, which I think really benefits the whole community.

Thanks, polarboy!    Smiley

I have nowhere near the collection of modules that polarboy has, but here are some more named, unstatted heroes:

Death Duel with the Destroyers:
Magnetic Man: Namesake power and maybe heightened strength or endurance to look at him.
Raven: Swings in on a cable and kicks Electrocutioner.
Avenger: No sense of his power. He's just seen on the cover with a tiny nuclear explosion coming off his chin, thanks to Behemoth's fist.
Micro Girl: Size change smaller and heightened strength, she explains on the back cover.
Morningstar: Looks like the prototype for Morningstar of Comico's Elementals, to John's point on the other thread.

Island of Doctor Apocalypse:
Action Man: same guys who appears in the 2nd edition rules.
Raven: Again. Here he can't keep up with Action Man's pace.

Force/Assassin:
Archangel: Wings and a sword
Empress: Same character from the 2nd edition rules. Flame powers are revealed in the Force comic page.
Blue Knight: Armor device and flight
Captain Cold: Ice powers

PS:
And of course in the front of the 2nd edition rules there's a bunch of named, unstatted heroes in the Dedication section and the Copyright notice.

Yes, one of our GMs ended up using some of them (one of these teams - the Guardians - had the same name as our team, so he went with a "70's Guardians" team for our campaign), and it took me a long time to figure out that this is where he drew them from.  I'll give some more details about that later.

Here are some more notes about unpictured heroes:

Blitzkrieg: a Germany who was on pursuit of Psi-Prime before his appearance in The Secret in the Swamp.

Mean Kathleen: her stats appear in the first-edition module Three Kilometer Island. She could be a hero or a villain. GM's choice.

The original edition rulebook includes stats for Volcanic Man (posted in the original edition thread on this site), and uses Balloon Man and Ring Master as possible examples of characters with the gimmick power.

Amos Jackson: a charismatic private eye with the ability to dection others with psionics. He is leader of the organization PSI in the original rulebook. He's Level 10.

Several more heroes are pictured and named in the original rules.

Here's the summaries from some early issues of the Guardians, where one of our player/GMs decided to use those character from page 1 of the rulebook.  You'll note quite a few familiar names.  We assumed the picture on p.5 was of Flying Cobra, and there is an image of Action Man on p. 6.

#50 – The Siberian Incident – A world-class threat is assessed, and C.H.E.S.S. King Homer Grimsby gives a briefing at Guardians headquarters about the Protocista parasite. Straasha, a hero missing for over 14 years, has resurfaced in Siberia and the Russians have lost contact with a secret paranormal research center. A group of C.H.E.S.S. Knights has secured the base, but reports a hostage situation and asks for the Guardians. Dr. Desist joins Action Man, Black Glove, and Flying Cobra of the 70’s Guardians team in forming Smoke unit, while Entropy, Crocodile, Quiasar, Shadow Knight, White Leopard, Firemist, and Flaming Star make up Fire unit. The Smoke unit jet develops engine problems and is diverted, while Fire unit lands at the hanger. Two impassive Knights meet the team and take them to see Straasha, but the heroes spot an ambush. The group battles Dragon, Snowball, Backfire, Cold Warrior, Straasha androids, and controlled Knights in an epic confrontation. Quiasar goes down, then Flaming Star, and the odds look bleak for the Guardians.

#51 – The Protocista – Quiasar is revived and the squad makes a comeback. The androids fall, but the others escape. Scouting missions reveal missiles ready to be fired, so they disable them. They invade the control center, where the main panel is protected by a force screen. As the team battles more Straasha androids, Dragon, Heater, Snowstorm, and Backfire, the tide starts to turn against the Guardians. Quiasar uses explosives against the force screen, which knocks out the missile control and fries Dragon. He barely maintains his own force field, containing the now active Protocista Collective!

#52 – Something Old and Something New – The true Straasha joins the fray and the battle continues with the plasmodia stage of the Protocista and those under it’s control. Flaming Star and Quiasar use flame to push the organism back, eventually destroying it in the blaze. The team retreats and Firemist falls. Smoke unit, minus a controlled Action Man, join them, and together they attack the remaining missiles. The villains mount one last stand, but the heroes have superior numbers and prove victorious. Although they are triumphant, the victors find they have suffered major losses. Cold Warrior and Snowstorm got away, Flaming Star is comatose, and Firemist’s body cannot be found.

Here are two more characters mentioned only in sections that describe new rules.

Kodiak can throw a punch that does 9 points of damage. Mentioned in a section about Zero-G conditions in Battle Above the Earth.

Power Woman weights 120 lbs. (3 basic hits) and no invulnerability or armor. She is still conscious after losing 22 hit points in a section on rules variants in Super-Crooks.
