Hi all,

Wondered what everybody used for their VnV character portraits ?

I did some by hand in the beginning and switched to HeroMachine (faster but the end result is not always exactly what you want nor hot looking either  Roll Eyes).

Now i've remade my old PCs using the character creator in Champions Online which produces really great looking results  Cheesy

We've used combinations, I have a cousin that used to draw all of our characters.  Sometimes we made up characters to match uniforms he had drawn.

I've used Hero Maker, City of Heroes character designer, and some of G7's are more recently.  There are some great character shots on this site.

I am so tempted to create a City of Heroes account just to use their heromaker.

I know there was a hacked version of the HeroMaker a few years back, but it involved really screwing the pooch with the application and it wasn't all that usable.. Do you still have to buy CoH _and_ have an account to use it? can you make a character offline?

I got that after some searching on the web and some hassle to make it work, but it's way less easy to use than CO's and nowhere near as pretty.

There was a stand-alonish version of the CO character creator made available for some costume contest but i don't know if it's still available. Was a big file though (2G Embarrassed).

We used to just describe the costume.  One of the occasional players was artistically inclined, so his heroes were all looking sweet.  Rest of us, not so much.

I stick with using descriptions for the most part, rather than drawing.

There was, a few years back, the Korean City of Heroes character generator.  All language in Korean, but supposedly there was a hack that changed it to English.  I never got the hack to work, and since I had a CoH account, it wasn't a problem.

There is also the alternate / competitor to Heromachine, drawing characters more in the style of the Justice League cartoon (big chest, square jaw) rather than the slimmer Heromachine style.  Don't have a link to it here.

That's what I used.. the Korean version. The switch to English was a simple registry hack and it worked. You had to do a few odd things first like start the software and stop it (not so easy when you can't read korean). Then you could hack the registry, otherwise it would get over written.

I vaguely remember it.

Most of us just drew the characters or had a friend do it. I am hoping that G7 will help re-draw some art for me

Fábrica de Heróis is a Portuguese site that may help.  There is an English setting on it.

We've usually just found cool images from elsewhere - comics, supplements, the web, etc.  Back in the day I had my original PC - Nightstalker - drawn professionally a number of times.  Among others, Mike Grell and Bill Willingham did awesome renditions of him (and loved and complimented his costume and look!).  I can draw pretty well, but have very rarely done entire characters, preferring to do markers only (which are smaller and simpler).  A few of our players have used HeroMaker and like systems as well.

Yeah, I've done it a few times.

Back in the day we would often have a professional artist do up a picture for one of our characters at Cons and the like.  I had my first character Nightcrawler drawn by Bill Willingham, Mike Grell, and some other guy whose name escapes me (did some RPG work, I think, but was never huge in comics).

Those same guys (Willingham and Grell) did some of our other PCs as well.

More recently (nearly a decade ago), I had a friend - who does an independent online comic - do up a group portrait for us with the original 6 long-time members of the Guardians.  We've used those images on character sheets, markers, and other stuff for years.

Mostly we just find cool images and use those anymore, instead of commisioning artists.

Alas, I wish I still had them.  I no longer have my PCs Willingham image, though I have one of my friend's PC.  I still have the Mike Grell image of my character, though.

If I had a time machine, that Willingham picture would probably be the item I would be most interested in getting my hands on again!    Smiley

Here's Mike Grell's rendition of my first PC, Nightstalker.  Willingham's drawing was even cooler, and I think he put a note on it about how cool the costume was!  The Willingham drawing showed him facing you, holding his grappling cable (I think), slightly crouched over and looking menacing.  It's honestly one of the coolest images I've ever seen (of course I'm biased).   Smiley

For some reason it's not allowing me to modify my original drawing (just made a scan that's a little straighter than the one I posted).

Here's a few more PCs we had drawn for us.  These next two are Sabre, my buddy's PC.  His Strength was 134, he hit you for 8d10 HtH (and he almost never missed, as his base to hit was 18); Jack Herman wrote on one character sheet that "HOO BOY! THIS GUY LOOKS TOUGH!"

That last one was Sabre as drawn by Bill Willingham; this one is Sabre as drawn by Mike Grell (both colored by my friend Greg Chastain).

I like to draw myself and usually hand draw all NPC, but it's actually really fun to hash out your characters with something like City of Heroes or Champion's Online. Here's a pic from CoH of my Agent Canada namesake, complete with Mountie.

I don't usually wear earmuffs and Santa boots they were holiday accessories, Canada's not that cold.

John, you can download a free trial of CoH, 14 days I think and play around with the creator. While not one hundred percent costumizable, you can create some pretty good likeness'

While it doesn't really replace role-playing, it can be fun on those days you just can't get a group together.

Very cool!  Nightstalker is one of my all-time favorite PCs, and I still play him from time to time (like in one-shots at Cons).  If the Dark Warrior looks like Nightstalker, then I'm a fan now as well!    Smiley

I, uhm (sheepish grin, looks down and shuffles feet), use Slik (Slick... not Silk) Slander as my alter ego since it was my main ring gimmick during my brief 2-3 year period in indy pro wrestling... I basically just recycle old photos since I've long since gotten rid of most the outfit components except for most of my masks and a few spiked wristbands.
