New V&V Fanzine?
Jul 21st, 2010 at 6:05pm
Print Post
I’m wondering if anyone here would be interested in possibly helping to produce a new V&V fanzine. It’d be a quarterly mag, produced as a PDF, and it’d contain contributions from fans.

I would definitely contribute.  I've thought of putting one out myself, but just don't know where I'd find the time (too much other stuff on my plate right now).

I'd glady contribute!    Smiley

I'm thinking each quarterly issue would be 12-16 pages in length, as I know most of us have full time gigs and/or families that consume a large portion of our time. limited the size, and number of issues, would allow plenty of lead time.

Each issue would contain a variety of material. Write-ups for characters, organizations, locals, equipment, vehicles, etc. Artwork, fan fiction, mini-scenarios. Advice for GMs, new players, etc. Alternate rules, letters (you remember them don't you?), interviews with the creators of the various products, etc.

Sound good?

Some suggestions,  first I volunteered  Sylver Nightwind to proof read.  She is good at that, and she said yes.  ( I will have to pay her in coffee coolattas!)

Here are some suggestions for articles;  Conversion Corner; we take turns picking a theme and everyone converts a characer.  Say one month is Golden Age Marvel, another is Halloween characters for October,  Myths,  Giant Monsters, etc...

Another article;  The Power Station;  each month we have an indepth discusion about power, or we do a write up on a new power.

the obligitory interview with  Jeff Dee and Jack Herman, if they are willing.

Character of the month,  somoene submits a new character, complete with artwork every issue.

And "Dropping A Line"  where we offer a short plot line for an adventure; a sort of mini module.

What do you think.

And I would love if all the character converstions and write ups followed Black Bolt's  wonderful X Men write ups!

I am scary, very, very scary.

Here's what I've worked up so far.

The Tower of Babble - Incoherent ramblings from the Editor (me)
In the Spotlight - Interviews/Bios with various V&V creators (I've already sent out the first batch of questions to Stephen Dedman)
The Rouges Gallery - Villain Writeups
Up Coming Events - People can pimp any upcoming V&V con events.
New Product Showcase - Highlighting the latest V&V offerings.
Miniature Showcase - People can show off their Miniatures work. The guys at Team Frog (the people who make the V&V miniatures have offered to sponsor a miniatures competition), the Mini of the Month.

Actually, I like the name Dropping a Line for a letters section, as that was one thing I used to love about my monthly comics haul.

And Conversion Corner sounds good too, as well as the Power Station, so both of them will be making an appearance.  Plus, you just gave me an idea, in addition to discussing existing powers, it can also be used to highlight homebrew powers, and show them being used in an example of play.

And for the plot seed section, I think I'll keep it simple, and call it the GM's Corner. Sound good?

Don't worry about the PDF, I can do the conversion myself. I need articles (hint, hint) artists, proof readers, and someone who can work with Photoshop. And a name for it. Right now I'm leaning toward Vigilance Quarterly, or simply Vigilance Magazine: The Official V&V Fanzine.

Yep, with her and Majestic, that's two proof readers, and I've got someone who's volunteered to help with the magazine layout.

It's sounding fantastic!  All great ideas.  I'd stay away from having "Quarterly" in the title, just in case it gets a little behind down the road (it's easy with real life intruding).  Simply having issue numbers should be enough for people to know which one to reference.

If you get a chance, Dom, check out these fan-made zines:

http://home.mchsi.com/~gandalfofborg/

Click on the site and then check out the "Fan Material" for both Lord of the Rings (the Hall of Fire) and Star Trek (Beyond the Final Frontier).

The quality on them is outstanding, and it just gives some ideas and inspiration on what can be done!

A lot of those links look broken.  Try this one, as I know you can view the Trek zines here.

For the LotR ones, anyone here feel free to shoot me a private email (dougred4@gmail.com) and I'll send you one.

I'm looking for mini-scenarios (4-6 pages max), character conversions, artwork, fan fiction (try to keep it and any artwork family friendly and no more than 4-6 pages). New villains (try to keep it to one page); optional rules; new powers; etc. All submissions should be in MS Word, as that's what I'm most familiar with. Images should be gif or jpeg.

If someone commits to submitting an article, I want it no later than 15 days prior to the issue going out, as I'd need to to get everything together. The goal is to get the fist issue out by the second week of Sept. and then, every three months after that (so the 2nd issue would hit the 2nd week of Dec.

While I know photoshop, I am no digital artist, I just use it for my photography. One of the many talented artists on this forum, the yahoo group, or the MHG forum would be best for a logo. I do volunteer my services for miniature reviews and possibly painting tips? I will try and take a lot of photos of the V&V/LL mini's in the various stages as I get them done.

Actually that's exactly what Paul is looking for. He wants pictures of minis as you work your way to a finished product. So anything you wend along would be great.

I can throw in a never-before-seen-villain for use in anyone's campaigns (the art/concept/write-up itself will be copyright 2010 to myself), but if you want it, it's something, PM me let me know.

Fan Fiction, Artwork, mini-scenarios, optional rules, new powers, devices, etc. Odds are, if it interests you, someone else may want to read about it.

I will do an optional rule article.

Dom, did you ever get a chance to check out one of those CODA system zines ("Hall of Fire" for Lord of the Rings or "Beyond the Final Frontier" for Star Trek)?

I've only read over the Star Trek one so far. I've got a rough idea of what I want the layout to look like, but I need to holler at Paul Lidberg about it, as he's volunteered to do the actual magazine layout.

Cool.  I wasn't at all suggesting that you ape either of their layouts.  I just think they're excellent examples of how professional a free PDF can be with today's tools.    Smiley

I have the six-page mini-adventure exclusively made (on behalf of FGU) for the fanzine's inaugural issue READY TO GO! Two new villains, a new fun organization, and some maps and counters. It is considered an official product by FGU, but will only be available in this fanzine to enhance its collectibility.

This assumes that it even gets into the fanzine given the clearly stated policy of the legitimate copyright and trademark owners under which permission for the fanzine was given.
