I just got around to reading issue one of Marvel's Mystery Men.  Wow.   It blew me away.     It was that good.  I hope the other four are just as good.
Its set in  the late 30's New York and has a nice noir feel to it.   I don't want to give any spoilers but the first issue got me to think about a new V&V Senario.
I know, my poor players have been going crazy with super heroes, cowboys, vigilantes, and now pirates, but I think this could work.

Here is the set up.

A Mysterious Benifactor has offered to fund a small group of engineers with their inventions.   After they have succesfully created them, he then says that its time to pay him back.  He doesn't want any money, just help.  He says that he needs them to go on search and discover mission in Asia.  After that,  the debt is even.

For my players who are interested,   make up your character using my NORMALS rule ( everything is the same but roll 10+1d8 for each stat)  and then PICK one invention.

Keep in mind that it is set in Manhattan 1935 of my normal story.    Post your characters here and one of these days will  get around to actually playing it out.

Oh and the comic that inspired this is also drawn by V&V's own Patric Zircher!   BONUS!

I am scary, very, very scary.

Any Invention?? This is going to take some thought as to what would be the most interesting for the 1930's.

When I mean one invention, I meant one power from the devices table.  You invented that device.

It figures.  I just finished issue number two, and they introduced the same character I wanted to make up for this story.   The only difference the comic character is a woman...   Just another example of comics stealing MY ideas... Wink

Color me intrigued!  Based on your recommendation (and helped by the Patrick Zircher art), I'll probably go pick this one up!

Here's a little preview for those who'd like to see more.

I also found an older article (from February) that suggested there was some legal wrangling over the name (being the same as the comic and movie starring Ben Stiller, William Macy, Hank Azaria, and others).

OK. Low Powered.

The Helmet: Heightened Senses

Sky Man: Flight Device (Formerly known as Air Male)

Zero G: Gravity Powers but only by a Factor of 1

My personal favorite. "The Void". I have no idea yet what his device is.

Sounds Good, and Evil.

So are we limited to not use any particular power from the device table?? I am liking this whole 30's thing and want to work on some ideas.

I forgot about The Leaper: Speed Bonus

I was going another way with The Void initially. Modified Vibratory powers but the defense only. Except whatever struck did not go through but instead went somewhere else. Someplace very, very cold.

Sky Man: Flight Device (Formerly known as Air Male)

Funny enough, there was an actual hero in the Golden Age named Air Male. Obviously, he could fly, but that was basically it.

Some ideas of my own:

The Dark: gun toting avenger of the night with a darkness control device.

Sky Marshal: My own take on a jet pack wearing hero:

The Wraith: another detective type (and legacy style hero). Wouldn't work for this as he technically has 3 gadgets (gas mask, swing line gun and a gas gun ala sandman):

Mordecai the Magnificent: Stage Magician and detective. Would either have a device that allows him to create realistic illusions, or a hypnosis (aka mind control) device.

I also have an old villain who could be a pulp style hero named Mr. Dread. He wears a suit, cape and skull face mask, and basically has death touch (which in this case would be a device built into his gloves).

I love the Sky Marshal, and the  Wraith would work as none of those devices are too overpowering.

Like if you wanted a dark bomb ( darkness control), I don't think night vision glassess would push it too much.

Sky Marshal and Wraith are some original Golden Age heroes I created for one shot games. Sky Marshal has the jet pack and a ray gun taken from an alien bad guy who invaded earth. In my background, he's actually a U.S. Marshal, and part of a special branch that deals with aerial crimes. The unit has a rocket ship called The Wyatt Earp, which Sky Marshal sometimes flies around in:

Damn Gerry!! Pictures and everything. Now I'm really going to have to come up with a good idea. Which I am not too good at. So is this evolving into a low power campaign then???

well, I had those pictures for something else, but they're adaptable to this campaign concept, so why not reuse them?  Smiley

If you wanted to use the jet pack guy for your idea, feel free. I could always use the Wraith for my guy. Or come up with another one.

I finished all five issues.  I loved it and I would purchase another series.   This, Sheild, and Agents of Atlas were the few comics I really got excited about in the past few years, and all by Marvel.

I found four of the five issues at a comic shop a few days ago, but I think I'm going to hold off until it comes out in a trade.  It does look good, but I didn't want to be missing an issue (plus each copy of #1 had a bit of damage to it).

btw John,

not sure if you ever check out the superbuddies forum, but awhile back, one of the admins, Kardiac, did his own take on The Avengers, but with more of a Pulp vibe. I figured I'd cross post the images, as they'd give more Mystery Men inspiration for a game:

Captain America:

Ms. Marvel & Thor, Dog of Thunder:

The Falcon:

Marc Spector, Moon Knight:

Yellowjacket:

Tony Stark, Man of Iron:

The Vision:

Group Shot:

The Bad Guy: Kang and M.O.D.O.K.

If anyone wants to read the backgrounds and such, Captain America starts it off on page 9 of the thread, right about here

I completely forgot about this.

Outside of the 1930's it is similar to what we were going to do with Villains
