Which original-edition origin is the best?

The 1979 version of the game had eight initial origin types (plus two more that were available to NPCs). For those unfamiliar, here's an abridged version of what they mean.

Mutant: born with uncanny DNA that gives you powers, like many of the X-Men

Designed: acquired devices/powers from someone else (with no stings attached). The original android Human Torch comes to mind.

Sponsored: acquired devices/powers with an obligation to serve a specific organization. Green Lantern is the best example I can think of here.

Homemade: self-trained and invented and powers/gadgets they might use. Batman and Iron Man fit this bill.

Accidental Scientific: The Fantastic Four. Spider-Man. The Incredible Hulk. The Flash.

Supernatural: everyone from magicians like Dr. Strange to inherently mystical beings (perhaps like Evergreen of the Crusaders).

Accidental Supernatural: a magical mistake or stroke of luck gives the character powers. An example that comes to mind is Captain Marvel (Shazam!)

Charismatic Involvement: the character is well-liked friends with super-types and might gain a power as a result. Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen is a good example.

The other two options for NPCs were …

Extraterrestrial: also includes off-shoot "races" on earth. Aquaman would fit. So would the Inhumans.

Nonpowered Adventurer: heightened abilities and a chance of being from another time/location. Kind of like Buck Rogers.

I don't really see how or why one is "best."

Do you mean "which is your favorite"? I like Accidental Scientific.

Accidental Scientific is easy to be creative with.
Mutant is lazy lol but can be fun to roleplay.
Accidental Supernatural brings in magic to the game, like it or not.
Sponsored/Designed, unless it's a device, it's kinda creepy.  Custom DNA, hybridization - it all rubs me the wrong way.  I love Captain America, but his origin is just unnatural lol.

You don't like magic in V&V?  I didn't think of the Sponsored as "creepy" until you mentioned it, but I agree!

I voted accidental supernatural because I hardly ever see it.  I think Doctor Doom had this origin, didn't he?

Not a huge fan of magic in V&V, probably from playing so much D&D - just colored my perceptions.

I try to keep magic either absent or minimal in super hero games as well. For me it opens too many cans of worms. Also don't use time travel or dimensional travel/alternate dimensions. Just not my bag: I like more grounded super hero stuff like classic Spider-Man.

I tend to keep magic and super-naturals out of my games as well.  Both just seem to introduce elements that do not mix well with the main premise. Its probably because I was never a fan of those characters. If a player really wants to have a character like that, I allow it and tend to view it as a psychosis more than an actual origin.  It also imposes strict guideline for the player to remain in character though or suffer extreme penalties.

Under this system there is no room for Alien, which I think might work in a category similar to Mutant. Aquaman fits in there somewhere.

Spider-Man FTW Smiley
