Captain Kirk wasn't just the captain of the Enterprise, he was the captain of the show.

When I was younger, I liked Spock.  I appreciated the dual nature and the attempt to keep the side he was 'ashamed of' under wraps.

As I got older and came out, I switched to McCoy.  He speaks his mind, and is hard as nails, but has a compassion under it all.  He's the embodiment of Tough Love.  He is Kirk's conscience and Spock's foil, and keeps their little throuple going strong.

McCoy. He reminded me of my own Doctor (who was from Georgia and sounded just like him) when I was a kid.

In rethinking this, I want to change my vote to Montgomery Scott.  The toughest character in all of science fiction.

My evidence? He wore a Red Shirt in all 79 episodes and survived to retirement age.....

I'll bet Roddenberry would pick Chapel, or maybe the original Number One as his favorite.
Just sayin'

Ok, that's excellent logic. Kudos.

That's right. Even Uhura initially wore yellow instead of red.

I selected Lt Cdr Montgomery Scott. He was kinds rough around the edges but always got the ship moving when it needed to move. Without Scotty, everyone else would have been dead pretty early on - especially with that hot-dog Kirk running the show. What put him over was the book "Kobayashi Maru" - he kicked Klingon @$$, and then designed the irrigation system for his sister's colony. Not bad.

Of course this was a really hard choice. After all, Kirk was "da man!" - no limp wristed Janeway diplomacy here. Spock was intelligent, but distant, very restrained - He is a very close second. McCoy, the cranky doctor from Texas was always an excellent counter to Spock. Sulu DROVE A STARSHIP!!! He DROVE a STARSHIP, people! He's also part of the reason I took up fencing - although I never looked as good with my shirt off  Grin (but I looked better than Kirk). Chekov was just a hoot - all things good came from Russia. Then there is Uhura. I would be calling the Enterprise seven times a day just to hear that lovely voice! She was a pretty tough gal, and I always figured she was on the bridge partly to keep the boys in line. I would love to have seen "Captain Uhura" get her own ship - like Sulu did.

One little correction, Ypsilanti: McCoy was from Georgia, not Texas.

My daughter got to meet Nichelle Nichols at last year's Enerald City Comicon (and got an autographed picture); still beautiful, even as she has aged.

And I was only a few feet away from Walter Koenig at a recent Star Trek convention a few months ago; that man is tiny!  Shocked

Check out the animated episode title "The Lorelei Signal" (in which Uhura takes command of the ship).

Ezzakly! Not her own ship, but pretty cool all the same.

Regarding red shirts, it's worth noting that the vast majority of "red shirts" who died were security officers not technical officers, who also wore that color (e.g. engineer Scott, and communications officer Uhura).

OT: For all the hype, I found John Scalzi's book Redshirts disappointing.

I'll bet you tell kids that lollipops cause cavities, too..

So, it is also worth noting Uhura never wore a red shirt.

I don't follow the lollipop remark. As for Uhura, I don't remember saying she wore a red shirt, just that she (usually) wore red, the same color as the "red shirt" security officers.
