Inquiry: Interest in Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG?
Jun 22nd, 2020 at 12:12am
Print Post
As I side project, I've been developing guidelines to relatively easily convert V&V characters into the Marvel Super Heroes RPG that was also popular during the 1980s. Those were the only two game systems that I've ever played regularly. If there is interest, here, I could post those guidelines on this forum as a series of posts within a thread in the days ahead.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Popularity
Reply #2 - Jun 22nd, 2020 at 11:29pm
Print Post
Since the revised edition of Villains & Vigilantes and the original Marvel Super Heroes RPG were popular around the same time, let's begin by determining a character's Popularity score before moving to the FASERIP abilities and super powers.

POPULARITY
For V&V heroes, start with the character's Reaction from Good modifier (which is usually a positive number) and add the character's Level. Multiply that total by 2.

For villains, start with the character's Reaction from Good modifier (which will usually be a negative number) and then subtract the character's Level. Multiply that total by 2.

EXAMPLES
Manta-Man, the heroic leader of the Crusaders, has Reactions from Good: +3. He is 6th Level. In MSH, Manta-Man has Popularity 18

Temper, a member of the evil Crusaders, has Reactions from Good: - . He is 1st Level. In MSH, Temper has Popularity -1.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Fighting
Reply #3 - Jun 22nd, 2020 at 11:58pm

FIGHTING
To determine a V&V character's Fighting rank in Marvel Super Heroes, look at their Accuracy Modifier on their V&V character sheet, along with bonuses to hit from Natural Weaponry (which also counts as either the power Claws or the talent Martial Arts).

-8/-6 = FEEBLE
-4/-2 = POOR
- = TYPICAL
+1 = TYPICAL
+2 = GOOD
+3 = GOOD
+4 = EXCELLENT
+5 = EXCELLENT
+6 = REMARKABLE
+7 = REMARKABLE
+8 = INCREDIBLE
+9 = INCREDIBLE
+10 = AMAZING
+11 = AMAZING
+12 = MONSTROUS
+13 = MONSTROUS
+14 = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLE
The V&V hero Lightning-Fist has Accuracy: +4, as well as +2 to hit with Natural Weaponry (for a total of +6). When converting Lightning-Fist to Marvel Super Heroes, his Fighting rank becomes REMARKABLE, with the talent Martial Arts.

With this conversion method, the V&V skill Heightened Expertise does not directly increase the character's Fighting rank but instead becomes a talent in the equivalent fighting method, such as Wrestling, Bows, or Thrown Weapons.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Agility
Reply #4 - Jun 23rd, 2020 at 1:48am

AGILITY
Villains & Vigilantes and the Marvel Super Heroes RPG both use an ability score called Agility. I suggest these guidelines when converting an Agility score from V&V into an Agility rank in MSH.

0-5 = FEEBLE
6 -8 = POOR
9-11 = TYPICAL
12-14 = GOOD
15-20 = EXCELLENT
21-32 = REMARKABLE
33-47 = INCREDIBLE
48-65 = AMAZING
66-86 = MONSTROUS
87+ = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLE
The V&V character Skyhawk has Agility: 18. Converted into Marvel Super Heroes, Skyhawk has an EXCELLENT rank in Agility.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Strength
Reply #5 - Jun 23rd, 2020 at 11:55am

STRENGTH
The chart in the V&V revised rulebook showing Carrying Capacity in Pounds and Basic HTH Damage maps reasonably well to power ranks in Marvel Super Heroes. To capture the spirit of each system, I suggest using the following guidelines to convert a V&V character's Carrying Capacity into their Strength rank in MHS. These guidelines also work when setting the MSH rank for V&V powers that work in a similar way.

1-30 lbs. (1 point) = FEEBLE
31-60 lbs. (1d2) = FEEBLE
61-120 lbs. (1d3) = POOR
121-240 lbs. (1d4) = TYPICAL
241-480 lbs. (1d6) = GOOD
481-960 lbs. (1d8) = EXCELLENT
961-1920 lbs. (1d10) = REMARKABLE
1921-3840 lbs. (1d12) = REMARKABLE
3841-7680 lbs. (2d8) = REMARKABLE
7681-15,360 lbs. (2d10) = INCREDIBLE
15,361-30,720 lbs. (3d10) = INCREDIBLE
30,721- 61,440 lbs. (4d10) = AMAZING
61,441-122,880 lbs. (5d10) = AMAZING
122,881-245,760 lbs. (6d10) = UNEARTHLY
245,761-491,520 (7d10) = SHIFT X

EXAMPLE
The hero Magnetor has a Carrying Capacity of 330 lbs. In MSH,  Magnetor has a Strength rank of GOOD.

The hero's Magentic Powers Device has magnetic capacity of 4200 lbs. The MHS power rank is REMARKABLE.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Endurance
Reply #6 - Jun 23rd, 2020 at 4:04pm

ENDURANCE
Villains & Vigilantes and Marvel Super Heroes both use an ability called Endurance. After a close review of each game system, however, I recommend using the Healing Rate from a V&V character sheet to determine that character's Endurance rank in MSH.

0.1-0.3 = FEEBLE
0.4-0.6 = POOR
0.7-1.1 = TYPICAL
1.2-1.5 = GOOD
1.6-2.3 = EXCELLENT
2.4-5.9 = REMARKABLE
6.0-11.9 = INCREDIBLE
12.0-23.9 = AMAZING
24.0-47.9 = MONSTROUS
48.0+ = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLES
The V&V outlaw Mammoth has a Healing Rate of 4.8, while his hired stooge 'Heater' Jenkins has a Healing Rate of 1. Converted into Marvel Super Heroes, Mammoth has an Endurance rank of REMARKABLE and Jenkins has an Endurance rank of TYPICAL.

REASON
A V&V character's Intelligence approximates the ability Reason in Marvel Super Heroes. Here are my suggestions for converting a V&V character into MSH.

0-5 = FEEBLE
6 -8 = POOR
9-11 = TYPICAL
12-14 = GOOD
15-20 = EXCELLENT
21-32 = REMARKABLE
33-47 = INCREDIBLE
48-65 = AMAZING
66-86 = MONSTROUS
87+ = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLE
The legendary Dr. Apocalypse has an Intelligence score of 50 in V&V. Converted to Marvel Super Heroes, Dr. Apocalypse has a Reason rank of AMAZING.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: Intuition
Reply #8 - Jun 23rd, 2020 at 6:31pm
Print Post
INTUITION
When converting a character across game systems, determine the Intuition rank in Marvel Super Heroes by looking at the V&V character's Detect Danger % (including modifications from powers and weaknesses). If a V&V character's Detect Hidden % is higher, use that number instead.

0-5% = FEEBLE
6-11% = POOR
12-15% =  TYPICAL
16-19% =  GOOD
20-32% =  EXCELLENT
33-48% =  REMARKABLE
49-64% =  INCREDIBLE
65-80% =  AMAZING
81-96% =  MONSTROUS
97% +  = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLE
Prince Kalm of the Aquin underwater kingdom has a 16% to Detect Danger in V&V. When converted to MSH, Prince Kalm has an Intuition rank of GOOD.

ANIMAL STATS
Prince Kalm also has the mutant power to communicate with oceanic animals, which brings me to an important note about the different approaches to animal stats across systems.  In V&V, animals and other creatures with the an Intelligence score of zero have a 0% to Detect Hidden and 30% chance to Detect Danger. When converted to the MSH system, wild animals default to a FEEBLE rank in Reason, Intuition and Psyche. Super-pets trained in scouting, on the other hand, sometimes have an Intuition rank as high as REMARKABLE.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: Psyche
Reply #9 - Jun 23rd, 2020 at 6:42pm

PSYCHE
I recommend adding a V&V character's Intelligence score and Charisma score to determine that character's Psyche rank in MSH, following the chart below.

0-11 = FEEBLE
12-17  = POOR
18-25  = TYPICAL
26-35 = GOOD
36-45  = EXCELLENT
46-55  = REMARKABLE
56-65  = INCREDIBLE
66 80 = AMAZING
81-100 = MONSTROUS
100 + = UNEARTHLY

EXAMPLE
Motivator, the most powerful and Most Wanted telepath in all of V&V, has an Intelligence score of 55 and a Charisma score of 35 (for a total of 90). When converted to Marvel Super Heroes, she has a MONSTROUS rank for Psyche.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: Resources
Reply #10 - Jun 24th, 2020 at 1:51am

RESOURCES
The Villains & Vigilantes revised rulebook has a formula to calculate a character's annual income and available cash, including the possibility of an inheritance. Instead of using that precise system to determine what a V&V character's Resources rank would be in Marvel Super Heroes, I think it works best to make a judgment call based on the character's background information. When in doubt, assign the rank TYPICAL.

Example
Sandra Montuori , a.k.a. Shapeshifter of the Destroyers, owns one of the world's largest trade and industrial corporations. The Destroyers' headquarters is located in the top three floors of the Montuori Traade and Industries Building, a 40 story skyscraper.

Shapeshifter's wealth seems to match the MSH description of the Resources rank INCREDIBLE (large corporation).

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: Body Armor
Reply #11 - Jun 24th, 2020 at 10:59am

BODY ARMOR
Here are my suggestions for converting the maximum Armor Defense Rating for a V&V character with the natural or technological Armor into a consistent Body Armor rank in Marvel Super Heroes.

30 = FEEBLE
31-40 = POOR
41-54 = TYPICAL
55-70 = GOOD
71-85 = EXCELLENT
86-100 = REMARKABLE
101-115 = INCREDIBLE
116-130 = AMAZING
131+ = MONSTROUS

Example
The Gnome, a V&V character from the Sub-Realm, has a Body Power that works like natural Armor, with a maximum Armor Defense Rating of 60. When converted into MSH, the Gnome has Body Armor with GOOD protection in MSH.

Converting V&V Characters into Marvel Super Hero RPG: Teleportation
Reply #12 - Jun 24th, 2020 at 5:29pm

TELEPORTATION

Villains & Vigilantes has a complex system for determining the distance a character can teleport, based on the character's current Power score and the set PR cost for that power. When converting a V&V character into Marvel Super Heroes, my recommendation is to assign the character a consistent Teleportation rank in MSH based on the character's PR cost for teleportation in V&V.

PR 1 = FEEBLE (2 areas)
PR 2 = GOOD (10 areas)
PR 3 = UNEARTHLY (100 areas)
PR 4 = CLASS 1000 (1000 areas)
PR 5 = CLASS 5000 (5000 areas)

Converting V&V into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: Inches to Areas
Reply #14 - Jun 30th, 2020 at 12:22am
Print Post
Although the exact distance of an "area" in the Marvel Super Heroes RPG is relative, with areas of terrain on game maps taking up less space indoors or in cluttered environments than outdoors, most of the MSH city maps show a typical city block at 2 areas long, with 1 area for the large intersection between blocks. If we average 12 blocks per mile, that gives us an average mile has 36 inches. With 5280 feet in one mile, one MSH area measures a length of 146.67 feet.

V&V, on the other hand, uses the term inch (often abbreviated ") to represent 5 feet. That means that  29" in V&V maps to approximately 1 area in MHS.

Converting V&V into Marvel Super Heroes RPG: FEAT Rolls
Reply #15 - Jul 3rd, 2020 at 7:44pm
Print Post
Some powers in V&V, and some challenges described in the published adventures, require characters to make a saving roll. Based on game mechanics of each systems, here are my suggestions for converting V&V saving rolls into Marvel Super Heroes FEAT rolls.

V&V saving rolls vs. Agility Strength or Endurance directly map to MSH FEATs for Agility, Strength or Endurance.

V&V rolls vs. Intelligence map to the MSH attribute Reason when intellect, memory or mechanical thinking is involved. Use the MSH attribute Psyche, however, when strength of will is needed (such as saving vs. Mind Control).

V&V rolls vs. Charisma typically map to the MSH attribute Psyche (such as saving vs. Emotion Control). In instances when a character's reputation is measured, however, use the MSH attribute Popularity.

Detection rolls in V&V map to the MHS attribute Intuition.

When V&V asks for a roll d20, a Green FEAT roll is needed in MSH.

When V&V asks for a roll d100, a Red FEAT roll is needed in MSH.

When a V&V adventure asks for a roll on 3d10 or thereabouts, a Yellow FEAT roll is needed in MHS.
