And now for something completely different...

One of the things that Masked Marvel and I did to give our universe a little more "reality" was to create monthly comic checklists for all of our heroes' titles. Many of these were handwritten and have since disappeared, but I found one recently and thought that I would share with everyone. Comments are welcomed, and if you've ever done anything similar, I'd love to hear about it!

All of the characters mentioned below are actual characters from our campaign. Purple Heart, Masked Marvel, and Cat Lord are major players (being the heroic incarnations of my wife, my best friend, and myself, respectively), while Morganna and the Druid are NPCs who make frequent appearances. Anyone else is a minor or supporting character.

Cat Lord had four titles: Cat Lord was his primary comic and featured new adventures each month in a four-color style. Cat Tales reprinted stories from other comics that had Cat Lord adventures. Eye of the Cat was a more gritty comic that often featured Cat Lord's encounters with non-super, but no less dangerous, foes. Cat Lord's Crime Files often featured stories about Cat Lord's personal life, or special issues dedicated to his friends, foe, history, or gear.

Legion of Justice was divided into four titles: East Coast, West Coast, North, and South. These were the four divisions created when the team became too large for one headquarters. West Coast was headed up by Cat Lord and based in Los Angeles. North was headed up by Purple Heart, and was based in Chicago. East Coast was under the jurisdiction of Masked Marvel and was based in Metro City. South was based in New Orleans under the leadership of Arachnoid.

Purple Heart had two titles of her own: Purple Heart was her primary title and like Cat Lord, it showcased her super-heroic adventures in a four-color style. Heartbeat was more of a "romance" comic, sort of a western shoujo manga, and often featured stories of Purple Heart and Cat Lord in their civilian identities. Many times, an entire issue would pass without a costume ever being shown.

The Druid and Morganna each had their own title, though strangely, Morganna's comic was always known as Morganna's Tales of Magic, rather than simply, Morganna. Heroic Tales was an older title that featured team-ups between heroes, most often Cat Lord and Masked Marvel.

This list was created while I was on a four-month tour of duty in Honduras with the Air Force. Judgment Day was our universe's answer to Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was meant to end our campaign and start a new one, but it didn't quite work out that way. In the end, we decided to keep it going, though that meant retrofitting some events that had occurred and fudging a few things. But that's comics!

If you're wondering why you don't see Masked Marvel or Legion of Justice: South or East Coast titles on this list, it's because those are the responsibility of Masked Marvel's player and I don't have a copy of the list he made for this time period.

Purple Heart's stats are not up yet, but I'll try to get them done this week. Morganna's stats should also be up within the next week, and I'll try to get The Druid done after that.

THE MINOR PLAYERS
This is a rundown of the minor characters mentioned above, in case anyone is interested.

Kitten bears a strong similarity to Black Cat (from the pages of Spider-Man), with a dash of Catwoman thrown in for good measure. Katherine Page is a skill-based vigilante (she began as a villainess, but became a semi-hero over time) with no real super-powers, just a lot of training.

Catnip was Kevin Greene, Cat Lord's sidekick (of whom the later wanted no part). He was a kid with a homemade costume, whose only real powers were a small degree of athletic ability and a spring-loaded tail on his costume. He served primarily as a comic-relief in Cat Lord's early adventures. Ironically, he would later grow up to abandon his Catnip identity, only to be involved in a freak (aren't they all?) lab accident and become Claw, a man who can transform into a cat/man hybrid beast.

Warhammer is Karl Ostrem, a native of Bergen, Norway. As a youth, he found that he had strength and endurance superior to his friends. As he grew older, so too did his physical stature, and by the time he was 17 years old, he was a staggering 8 feet in height and could easily heft a small car over his head. Recognizing that he had a gift, Karl took up a two-handed maul and began a heroic career as Warhammer. His activities were at first confined to the Nordic countries, but he soon found that crime was relatively low compared to other countries, such as the United States. Having heard of the Legion of Justice, he traveled to the U.S. to inquire about joining and was readily accepted.

Enveloper is Karen Windham, who has the mutant ability to generate force fields around herself or others. Her degree of control is such that she can actually shape the fields into forms such as simple levers or weapons, and can maintain them so long as she has power reserves to do so.

The Elementals are exactly what they sound like; four elemental beings composed of (and with control over) earth, air, fire, and water. The Druid was chosen by Gaia to serve as her protector, but the job proved difficult for just one man (even one empowered with control over all living things). The Druid petitioned the entity for aid, and she responded by choosing four humans to receive the powers of the elements; The Elementals.

Mystina is Tina Prince, a young woman who once worked as an assistant to Balkazar, a master illusionist. After his untimely death (he was killed in a failed robbery attempt), she found an old book among his possessions. It was a book of magical spells; he was far more than a simple stage magician! Tina studied the book until she was able to master some of the more basic spells and, combined with her knowledge of gadgetry and illusion, swore to avenge her mentor as Mystina.

Angel's origin is as much a mystery to her as anyone else, but she has proven herself as worthy as any who call themselves hero. She possesses a majestic (and fully functional) pair of angelic wings that project from between her shoulder blades, as well as enhanced strength, speed, and charisma. What is known is that she is a synthetic being (she has no navel and is sexually sterile, though fully capable), genetically engineered and enhanced with cybernetic implants.

Spirit is an alien being from another dimension. Years ago, a vessel she was piloting shifted between dimensions and crash-landed. She was rescued from the crash by Cat Lord and nursed back to health. As she grew stronger, she found that she could become both invisible and intangible at will. Under Cat Lord's tutelage, she learned more about the customs, history, and traditions of Earth and the United States and became Spirit. Externally, she is identical to humans, though an internal examination will show differences in organ placement. Her native name is unpronounceable by humans, so she generally goes by Spirit or, more recently, Sylia.

The Pixie is Jeanette Hauser, who had always been small. But one day, she noticed with alarm that she was shrinking at an increased pace, to the point where she actually losing pounds and inches at the rate of several per day! Doctors could offer no explanation and the woman continued to grow smaller. Fortunately, her shrinking stopped at a height of six inches, and seems to have stabilized there. Shortly after her shrinking stopped, she endured several days of tremendous pain as a pair of butterfly-like wings emerged from between her shoulder blades and her ears reshaped themselves. When the transformation was complete, she had the appearance of a tiny winged elf; a pixie. Distraught at the thought that she could never live a normal life, she considered suicide, but before she could act on the thought, she encountered Angel of Legion of Justice: West Coast, who shared her own story with the young woman. Jeanette was moved by Angel's tale and asked if the LOJ could find a place for her in their ranks. After being accepted, Jeanette (now calling herself The Pixie) was given a magical bag of dust by Morganna. The dust can have one of three effects on those who breathe it; causing a deep sleep, placing them into a trance-like state, or causing vivid hallucinations. The bag is enchanted so as to never run short of dust.

White Knight is actually Jacob Gregory. As a teen, Jacob was obsessed with medieval life and fantasy role-playing games. He spent a lot of time at SCA events and Renaissance Fairs and eventually learned the basics of blacksmithing. By the time he was 17, he had a small forge in his backyard and was producing functional weapons and suits of armor. In school, he excelled in electronics and soon began modifying his armor and weapons to take advantage of modern technology. Donning a suit of enhanced plate mail and carrying a broadsword, he became White Knight. His armor and weapons have been tweaked over the years, as he is constantly making refinements and taking advantage of new technology.

Tantilizer's alter ego is Jessica Hart, who developed the ability to instill strong emotions of love in others during her early teens. As she has refined her powers, she can vary the amount of emotion they feel from an overwhelming lust to a gentle tug on the heartstrings, directed towards the individual of her choosing. Being a black belt in karate and aikido helps her defend herself if things get physical.

THE BAD GUYS
Because a hero is nothing without someone to do battle with, here are the basics for the villains mentioned above.

Gataleon is a woman whose powers are almost identical to those of Cat Lord. She even impersonated him at one point, resulting in his being wanted until he could clear his name. She was given her powers by a different cat-goddess and wished to eliminate Cat Lord and instill herself as the avatar of cat-kind.

Gangland is the alter ago of Tye Jefferson, a man who grew up on the mean streets of Los Angeles. He began as a gang-banger and rose to the status of a minor warlord, with several gangs under his control. He is a very skilled street fighter, though lacking in super-powers.

Crimelord, along with Greywulf, is one of Cat Lord's oldest foes. Crimelord, whose real name is Maximilian Bennet, is a non-super figurehead for a massive criminal empire that spans much of the United States. His primary threat to Cat Lord comes not from meta-human abilities, but rather from the fact that he can call upon nearly limitless goons and technologies.

Greywulff, possibly Cat Lord's greatest foe, is Prince Heinrich von Greywulff, ancestral ruler of the eastern European country of Teravania. Greywulff is a man doubly-cursed. Like his father before him, Greywulff is a lycanthrope. When the moon is full, he takes the form of a savage man-wolf, and he had learned over the years to control the ability to the point where he can change regardless of the phase of the moon or the time of day, though a full moon will always trigger a change. When he was 20 years old, he was caught after dark on an extended hunting expedition. He had been tracking a prize deer and soon found himself far from home and on a moonless night. In the darkness, something attacked him, tearing his throat out. Three days later, Greywulff returned to his home, bearing no scars from his encounter and with only a hazy memory of what had happened. He would later discover that he had been slain by a vampire. The creature that created him sought to bring him under its control, but it did not know of Greywulff's other affliction and was caught off-guard when he transformed and killed his would-be master. Since that time, Greywulff has ruled Teravania with an iron-clad fist. It was a missing American diplomat that first brought him face-to-face with Cat Lord and sparked a lifelong feud between the two.

Twilight is Jonathon Trask, a second-rate villain with a device that grants him the ability to lessen light and increase shadows in a given area. He is primarily a corporate raider, specializing in breaking into corporate offices and stealing secrets, which he then offers to the highest bidder on the black market.

Earthdragon is an ancient evil imprisoned by Gaia in the bowels of the Earth some 5 million years ago. A weakening in the stability of nature caused by the events surrounding Judgment Day resulted in his being freed from his prison and he promptly sought to avenge himself upon mankind, whom he saw as an infestation.

D.E.A.T.H. stands for Diabolical Ensemble of Arcane Terrorist Headmasters, a convocation of magical evildoers with many fingers deeply embedded in illicit projects. Their structure is similar to that of C.H.E.S.S. in many ways, but with a more magical bent.

The Zodiac is a group of twelve villains whose powers are each based on the astrological signs of the same name. They are led by Scorpio, a mysterious figure who is seldom seen and never directly involves himself in missions, but sends his robotic minions to aid his companions.

Morgan Le Fay is the same person described in Arthurian legend. Juliette Morgan, a modern descendant of Morgan Le Fay, found a shard of the Orb of Merlin, a powerful magical artifact crafted by the master mage himself. It awakened the spirit of her ancestor within her and brought her inherent magical abilities to the surface. Originally, Morgan Le Fay could only occasionally summon the energies necessary to take control of Juliette's body and use it to her own ends, but since Judgment Day, she has somehow managed to free her spirit and possess others, which makes her far more dangerous.

Whew! So there you go, more than you probably ever wanted to know about our campaign. If there are any other blanks I can fill in, I would be happy to do so. Of course, this is just a small sampling of the heroes and villains in our library.

Great stuff, Cat Lord!  Reminds me somewhat of what I've done, putting our sessions into somewhat of a comic format.  But you took things a few steps further (with special crossovers, annuals, tie-ins, etc.).  And I love how they're written in the style seen so often in comics!    Cheesy

Were the Elementals mentioned above the same team that we saw in the pages of the Comico comic?

Thank you for the kind words! No, actually, I had never heard of The Elementals at the time this was written. I know very little about Bill's creation. My version are humans that were essentially turned into elementals courtesy of Gaia.

Although, I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and it seems that I need to get myself over to Ebay and see if anyone has back issues for sale! I appear to have missed a classic!

It is good stuff. I never really realized how it also was early in the "gritty" comics movement (which I don't really care for, but I LOVE the Elementals, go figure).

You really do.  It's probably the best run of comics out there, in the opinion of many of us.

The fact that they were created by a V&V enthusiast and have main adversaries that are V&V villains doesn't hurt!   Smiley

Another interesting factoid is that Gaia is one of the main adversaries (well, an emissary of Gaia, anyway) in the new "Into the Sub-Realm" (the new adventure that was just released).
