A Glaring commentary

Print Post
Hello,

My name is Eric Palond. My father Thomas was the head of Weapons development for Phillip Manning. I also work for Manning. My father and I developed a suit of powered armor that manipulates light particles in it's various forms. It was a pet project, part of our Father/Son bonding. We never showed it to Manning, and built it ourselves on our own time. Shortly after the suit was completed, my father disappeared. Fearing Manning had a hand in this, I went to CHESS.

Now, I work for CHESS as a Rook, spying on Manning, because CHESS suspects he has sinister machinations. Since I brought the armor with me, they've also assigned me to work with a group of heroes. Not being used to the super hero business, I chose the not so glamorous code name of Glare. Yeah, it's cheesy, but I think it helps make potential enemies underestimate me. Which is good, cause I'm still wet behind the ears.

My first mission: In space, no one can hear you piss yourself

My first official mission was going with Dark Warrior, Elusion, Marshal Strong and Modi into space. We were going to the Gilgamesh, which had been missing for months. To say I was nervous was an understatement. I mean, I'm in the presence of heroes who in some cases, are literally gods. I'm just a spoiled rich kid with a super IQ and a high tech suit that allows me to control light. Some of these guys scare the shit out of me. Dark Warrior seems particularly ominous, and Modi with his Hammer worries me. It doesn't look that bad at first sight, but I know now that it can pry my suit open like a freaking tin can.

Marshal Strong seems ok, but he likes to throw punches pretty quick when things don't seem to go his way. Elusion seems the most laid back of the bunch; our both being scientists likely makes us both more analytical in certain situations.

Anyway, when we got to the ship, we find out the captain has seemingly been killed, and the rest of the crew have been turned into some kind of cybernetic beings. They refused to follow our orders, and we ended up in a fight with the two that were conscious.

I was all ready nervous seeing Dark Warrior go into a rage, and attack a freaking asteroid! Granted, it had robot spiders coming out of it, but still, it was a scary sight.

Being nervous, I screwed up my targeting sight, and accidentally hit Modi in the back of the head with a low yield laser blast. The look on his face when he turned to me made me almost piss myself. I was sweating bullets; I need to add more cooling units to the internal part of the armor!

These cyborgs were tough, and I held back, mostly out of fear of being in the way. I was able to blind one of them, but the bulk of the fighting was Modi, Strong and Warrior against them. Elusion was accessing the ship's computers, and he was able to get some info.

After ejecting both cyborgs into space, Strong ran into some kind of alien life form. We left the Gilgamesh, and destroyed it from a distance.

I can't believe I came out of that fight without a scratch. I still get the shakes when I think about it. If I wasn't as smart as I am, I'd probably be stupid enough to become an alcoholic like that comic book character did.

I saw Manning and his son get into it today. Looks like the kid wants nothing to do with his father. I need to see if I can exploit that to dig up some dirt for CHESS.

Some loser villain named Ray took on a new identity. He faked his own death in order to get to Black Mesa, and kill some heroes. Calling himself Death Ray, he went after Black Warrior. I tried to laser him, but he was in some kind of ghost form. He was scared when I tried to blind him, but in the end, Dark Warrior went into the same ghostly form, and kicked him in the nuts.

We had to take him back to Deep Six. It was pretty boring. this guy is kind of challenged, so he kept watching cartoons on the trip. turns out he really likes the Smurfs.

On the way back, we got a distress call that a cruise ship was being attacked by a giant squid. I accessed satellite info, and we saw it was being controlled by the Sub Human. This guy was a hero who went MIA 2 years ago. I'm pretty sure he's gone insane, which means if we don't stop him fast, the Moevians will. He also had some servants that looked like those sea monkey things they used to advertise in the back of comic books.

Dark Warrior flew Modi and I with him (as he flies faster than my armor does). DW went right after the squid after throwing Modi at Sub Human. What I saw next scared me worse than our mission in space.

Modi literally took off Sub Human's right arm with his hammer! I almost threw up in the armor, but I had to save his trident. It might be of use, so I wanted to save it. I did, but had to get the arm off it. Gross.

Warrior was going toe to toe with the squid. Not sure what to do, I set off a wide range flash of light, affecting the Squid and the monkey things. The monkey things jumped off the ship, which meant the passengers and crew would be ok.

Though blinded, the squid got the upper hand on Warrior. I charged it, and stabbed it's closed eye with the trident, but don't know if it did much. I kept hearing Modi and Sub Human fighting (they had crashed into the ship through it's deck while brawling).

Warrior came back at the Squid, and knocked it up out of the water. I fired off a series of laser beams, cutting off 4 of it's tentacles. It fell back into the water, and appeared to be dead.

One of the monkey people waved at me. I approached him, but he spoke to me in German! I don't know German, so I didn't know what to do. Warrior showed up, and used some kind of mind communication with the thing. I touched him, joining in. turns out these monkey people were transformed by Sub Human, and used to be german citizens. This is bad. This guy is nuts, and can transform people and sea life into monsters. I am so out of my depth here (no pun intended)

Modi and Sub Human are in the water now, and a giant wave is approaching. I'm trying to get the people on the ship organized, but they're in a panic about the giant wave. Except it's not a wave. It's a whale larger than the cruise ship! Trying not to hyperventilate, I try and come up with a plan of action.

Modi is on the surface, and he's beating the whale with his hammer. I go for a blinding flash on it, but this thing is so huge. I'm contemplating a suicide run into it's mouth, and just firing lasers at it's inside. I might do some damage before I die.

Warrior actually thought of something I should have. He mentally connected with the whale, and convinced it to leave. Thank god! Even Modi was hardly doing anything with his hammer of doom!

The ship is damaged though, and we need to evacuate everyone. Over a hundred passengers and crew died when the whale struck the side of the ship with it's massive fin though. I call our sub, and instruct them to organize a massive rescue operation. With Warrior's aid, we get Johan (the sea monkey who spoke to us) to have the sea monkey people help save everyone.

Sub Human got away, but he lost an arm, and Modi says he broke the other one, and part of his leg. I hope he doesn't come back. That whale could have killed all of us.

Now we need to find a way to help Johan and his fellow sea monkeys. They were people once; can they be so again? And is this trident just plain old coral, or something more?

I still feel out of my league, but my confidence is growing. I still think I need to try and figure out how to replicate Dark Warrior's Omni Wave though. If he ever turns crazy like Sub Human did, it might be the only way of stopping him. I know my armor alone wouldn't last five seconds against him.

Still, I'm starting to realize that even though I rely on my armor, I'm possibly the only one who won't go insane some day. Which means I may be the only one who may have to stop my team mates if they go over the edge. I don't stand a chance in hell, but I still have to prepare myself to try.

Seeing what he can do, and seeing him lose it on the first mission scared the shit out of Glare. Seeing what happened to Sub Human, and how powerful he was as a lunatic, also made him realize that one day, his team mates might go that same route.

so he figures that even though he likely has no chance in hell, he needs to at least make some preparations. Kind of like Iron Man with his Hulkbuster/Thorbuster armor, I need a Dark Warrior buster armor  Tongue

Carter Manning approached me outside the offices where I work for his father. He wanted me to help him with a secret project that isn't connected to his father's business. Curious, I heard him out. He showed me designs for some kind of suit. Not like mine though. This one is for use underwater, with a bit of a manta ray look. I told him I would, and we shook hands.

First chance I got, I contacted my superior at CHESS. I don't know what Carter wants to use the suit for, but if he plans on using it for evil, CHESS can confiscate it, and give it to someone to use for good. Either way, I plan on building a fail safe into it, so if he does use it for evil, I can shut it down from my own armored suit.

We got together today, and were working on the suit. He has some interesting ideas for it; I didn't think Carter was that technically inclined, even though his father is. I started working on the failsafe, secretly working it into the components were were building.

I got back to Black Mesa late, and learned that Colonel Strong and Elusion had gotten into a battle with a woman claiming to be the daughter of the Wargod, an old foe they had faced before. Strong was wounded, and Elusion is reported killed in action. This saddens me. He was the most stable of the heroes I'm working with, and was far more intelligent than I am. He knew the Omni Wave device inside and out which means I may never figure out how to replicate it now.  Where the hell were Dark Warrior and Modi while this was going down? From the description of this woman Sera, Modi would have loved shattering her limbs with that hammer of his.

Thew world has just become a little bit darker.

Rumor has it they were together, in the darkest room of the dark mesa, if you catch my drift.

Yes Elusion is dead. Very sad day but what can you do.

I think Glare would have died last night then. He hasn't been in a straight up fight yet, and I bet those grenades would have torn through his armor from what Paul said the die results were. Guess not feeling well saved my character for one more adventure  Tongue

[Glare is seen sitting in front of a TV, watching a video of Modi, Wally and himself sitting at a table. Modi is pointing to where Glare's laser had sheared his hair on their first mission together. Glare is seen on screen apologizing to Modi for doing that, but Modi just laughs, and slaps Glare on the back. They raise their tankards together, then drink. Glare shuts the tv off]

I still can't believe they're gone. Wally and Modi were the two most powerful beings I've ever met. Sure, they were both unstable, and one day I may have had to try and take them down. Still, they were good people. I regret that this mission involving Carter Manning kept me from fighting beside them the last time anyone say them. A part of me feels like I let them down. Wally supposedly gave his life to save the universe (or so the report I read states), and it's possible whatever he did caused the White Event. With Elusion dead and Marshal Strong on a long term assignment, it's just me now.

I don't know if I can do this alone. I'm still a rookie, but now I find myself the most experienced "hero" working for Chess at Black Mesa. What a joke! I'm no hero! I'm some guy who built a suit of powered armor modeled on a comic book character I read as a kid. I don't have real powers.  I've been on two real missions, and both times, Dark Warrior & Modi did the bulk of the fighting. Hell, Elusion did more than I did. The CHESS brass tell me that I'm important to rebuilding the team; they must be crazy. How do you replace such powerful beings? I just don't know if I'm cut out for this.

At least the Moevians are gone from our solar system. I hope they never come back. I feel they are one of the reasons Wally's dead, and Modi is gone.

Work with Carter on this suit of his is progressing. I've bugged his lab with cameras, so I can record everything. I've also figured out how to work a secret kill switch into the suit in case he plans on using it for criminal purposes. I don't think he is, but better safe than sorry.

I need to build the kill switch in my lab back at Science City. Guess I'll head over there tomorrow.

Thanks! I was kind of motivated to have him show his mixed feelings. Even though Modi and Wally scared the shit out of him, he respected them for using their powers to help others, and not just themselves. I also like playing him as this scared, unsure person.

Yeah, that comment didn't come out the way I intended. I was writing that stuff before I forgot the ideas I wanted to convey, and I was pretty tired when I did it.

Elusion was probably the one guy Glare respected the most, since he seemed the most sane. Even Marshal Strong made him nervous, since he tended to hit things when non violence might have been an option  Tongue

Thanks Hawk! I haven't played too many sessions so far, but I'm enjoying the camaraderie of John's group. Even when the characters fight and bicker amongst themselves, the players are just having fun.

Having not had a regular group to play in for a few years now, it's good to join a group like this, and I appreciate how they've accepted me. It's giving me a lot of inspiration for these journals.

Things are really getting crazy. I didn't sleep well the night before. Had some weird dreams I can't fully recall, but I know they were bad, cause I woke up sweating. I was working on that kill switch in my lab, when Dr. Robson came in. It appears that Dr Yurt, who designed Science City, appeared in the morgue on the first floor of the complex.

Dr. Yurt went a little bonkers when Manning didn't follow his designs on how the city was supposed to be built, and kept claiming there was something wrong with its symmetry.

Robson asked me to suit up as Glare, and accompany security to the morgue. I did so, and saw that one of the guards was no a metahuman, obviously changed by the White Event. He kind of reminded me of that Elric character whose stories I read as a kid. He seemed a bit paranoid, as he was keeping his distance from me. He wouldn't walk in front of me, so I just ignored him. I did contact CHESS with my communicator, and inform them that an unknown Metahuman was in the research complex.

When we got to the morgue, the guards started cocking their weapons, because Yurt wasn't alone. One of his two companions was a Moevian! What the hell was he doing here? I thought all of them were gone! CHESS needs to know that they left someone behind! I tried to get the guards to lower their weapons so I could question the Moevian, but that albino dude blasted Dr. Yurt. All hell broke loose as the guards opened fire. I blasted their weapons, but Yurt's other companion started to fight with the albino. The Moevian brought us all together telepathically, and we all learned that Robson was a metahuman himself!

Seems that CHESS was right about covert experiments. Robson was calling something called "Zomborgs". I tried to blind everyone to stop the fighting, but then some weird fog rolled in from the street. I got blasted by the albino, which damaged my armor. Another blast of something hit me, but I didn't really hurt me. I started calling CHESS for an assault team, because I was in way over my head!

The Moevian knocked Robson out around the same time, then warned us that the Zomborgs were coming. Sure enough, these men with cybernetics were coming down the hall at us. They looked dead, and appeared to be drooling. I fired a blast at one, but as I was freaking out, I missed, and blew a gas line. The explosion knocked me out.

When I woke up a little while later, it seems all the new metahumans were fighting these zomborgs together. Through the mindlink the Moevian had with all of us, I learned that someone on the floor above knew one of us was a CHESS agent, and that they wanted to use us as guinea pigs for an experiment. I almost threw up at that point, because I suspected they wanted to make us into zomborgs.

I blinded the ones attacking us, and albino guy and someone who was apparently invisible took them out. Yurt was up, looking pretty beat up, and motioning for us to go through some door. More importantly, there was this humanoid frog thing in the morgue. It had been autopsied, but was now sitting up, pulling pins out of it's body!

Figuring this was some experiment they did, I wanted to take it with me. However, the albino turned it into mush with a blast of energy. Seeing Robson unconscious nearby, I grabbed him, and went to escape with Yurt. The Moevian and his companion joined me. Albino and this other person (who may have been the invisible attacker from earlier) hesitated, but then joined us. Now we're in these tunnels underneath Science City, running for our lives. I hope that CHESS team arrives soon. Robson is proof that Manning is doing something. If we can survive long enough to meet up with them, I'll have accomplished the mission CHESS recruited me for. Maybe Robson knows what happened to my dad. If he wakes up, I might just have to "ask" him about that.

As scared as I am, I have to get Robson to CHESS. Nothing else matters right now.

What I like about Glare, is that he does what a hero should do.  His first attack was to disarm the mercenaries, without attacking them.   He then blinded everyone and stopped the fight.   He then tried his best to help the Dead Frog.

I forget,  Gerry, did you get the Hero Bonus? If not, you should have.

Well, I look at Glare from the aspect of him being a scientist first. So he's not a really violent person by nature. Then add in his insecurity, and he tends to be cautious with his attacks. Blinding people means they can't see him to hurt him, and well, he usually has comrades to take them down after he blinds them.

He targeted the mercs because he didn't want anyone hurt from bullets flying everywhere in such close quarters. Blinding everyone was to stop the fight, because he didn't really know what else to do. Helping the frog man was more self serving, since he considered the Frog Man proof that Manning was conducting illegal experiments (which is why CHESS recruited him, to find proof Manning isn't the good person he appears to be).

It's a stark contrast from how I usually play heroes. I like it though. It's been giving me good inspiration for these journals!

No, because when we discussed it, it was kind of agreed that no one was being particularly heroic during the main fight. I didn't feel that Glare's actions really did a good job of stopping the fight (considering Deacon being blinded caused a guard to die when his mind control flubbed!), I didn't think Glare did something that heroic  Embarrassed

Even with the bonus, I still need over 7,000 to get to the next level. Unlike previous adventures where I got a lot of xp (cause I was low level, and everyone else was higher), I don't see that happening anytime soon. Which is fine by me, because I jumped up to this level in 2 adventures. Now I really have to earn the next one  Wink

No new journal entry, as Glare is currently unconscious in a tunnel underneath Science City. However, I have something to share. I'm working on a potential villains book for various supers systems (possibly V&V among them). My artist, Kris Smith did a sketch for a yet to be named villain in a suit of powered armor. The same image is going to be for Glare's suit, just in a different color. He sent me a sketch for approval on Saturday, so I thought I'd throw it up on Photobucket, so people can at least see the design of Glare's armored suit. It should look cooler when it's colored in. The inspiration for the armor was a cross between the Crimson Dynamo from the Marvel Universe, and the Spitfire armor from New Universe's Spitfire & The Troubleshooters/Codename Spitfire.

Those were some very nicely written Journal Entries for your character of Glare, Gerry.
He came across very believable in a fantastic world.

Is Carter Manning in this story a young man? and his inspiration to build the suit isn't the death of his wife?

G7,

John can answer those questions, as he started that sub plot for my character. I only know that Carter doesn't get along with his father, and his father might be a bad guy (or at the very least, very misguided)

[Continued from last time...]

In the tunnels, something caused me to lose consciousness. When I awoke, I was strapped to something, along with Dr Yurt and 2 people I didn't recognize. One was a woman wearing a lab coat (and apparently nothing else), and a young man wearing some kind of high tech gauntlets. Robson was making some grandoise speech about something called The Octagon, then he pulled a lever, and I felt my stomach lurch.

Next thing I know, the four of us are in the same lab, but everything looks like it's made of some kind of black material. Yurt claims we're in some sort of shadow realm that is connected to our world. After some searching, we come to the conclusion this is the shadow realm's Science City. We head out of the building and into the city, hoping to find a way back to our world.

I learn the man and woman are called Nemesis Kid and Startide. I don't have time to learn how they got involved in this mess before some kind of shadow being attacks the Kid from behind. I blast it with a laser, and it's hurt. Startide causes Kid and herself to move up into the air. She's spotted by that Moevian I met in the Manning building when all this craziness started. He contacts her telepathically, and she lets me know of that. Telling Yurt to hold on, I fly up to her, and with her holding onto my leg, fly all of us over to where he is. He's with some woman named Anodyne (who I don't know), some guy who is out cold, and another guy in a soviet era military uniform.

Warlock informs us that the Slaad (the name for the frog people, one of whom we ran into in the Morgue back on earth) are invading this world due to the imbalance in Science City. Anodyne heals Kid, but he acts high as a kite. He sees something, and while no one else believes him, I get the feeling even in his state of mind, it's worth checking out.

As we fly up, I see Slaad climbing down the Colossus. As we get near to the torch, I get this vibe I shouldn't go any higher. I stop, and Kid (who seems ok now) asks why. Before I can reply, a Slaad leaps down on us, and his clawed hand ignores my armor, and almost gouges out my freaking eyes! Kid pummels him with his gauntlets, and I laser the bastard for good measure. I then tell Kid to close his eyes, and let out a blinding flash before heading down. That does the trick, as the Slaad all scream, and some shadow beings yell "Smee!" as well.

The Slaad almost nails Yurt, but doesn't. We find some piece of tech in it's remains. Taking it with us, we head to where the soldier's camp is. Turns out he and some others were stranded here years ago, while flying an experimental rocket. I suspect there's more to this than meets the eye, so I hope I can see what's left of it.

The Russian, Pavel, takes us to the camp with him and his surviving crew members. They all look like Holocaust victims. I need to make sure they all get back to Earth with us. They believe they are in Hell. Who can blame them? The captain is a bizarre one. Warlock says his mind isn't singular, which I take to mean the guy is schizo. Better keep an eye on him.

[Continued....]

After letting Anodyne heal me (and going through feeling like I've taken a hit of acid), we learn about the Slaad building some device in the desert. I also inquire about the ship the Russians were in when they got here. Pavel agrees to show it to us, as I tell him we might be able to take them home.

First we go to an area with some dark ectoplasm that can be shaped like anything: Food, clothing (which the Kid and Startide both use to fashion costumes, since they had none. Especially Startide, who revealed a little too much when she negated gravity to save Kid from that Smee), even photos. While some partake of this shadow food, I don't. Warlock was able to read the Russian captain wanting us to eat this stuff a bit too much before his mind was closed off. I'm starving, but I try and suck it up.

After we rest awhile, Pavel and the others take us to the ship. It looks like a kind of space shuttle. However, once I really examine it, I can tell there is no standard propulsion on this vehicle. It can't fly. However, i find what appears to be a drive that, if I'm right, will allow the ship to breach the dimensional barrier. It's not working, but if I can find something to power it with, I might be able to repair it. I'm no expert on Dimensional Physics (which is more theoretical than what I know), but I know enough of the basics that I might be able to save us all. I wish Elusion were here; if he was alive, he'd have figured this out in less than 5 minutes. As much as I'm feeling out of my depth here, I realize I'm the only one who has any chance to get us home.

It's bizarre to think that only a few months ago, i was the rookie hero. Now I'm the most experienced one here. While no one is in charge, i can see most of them look to me for guidance. I can't let them down. Not just for our own sakes. I have to warn CHESS about the Slaad, and about Robson and this Octagon group.

My armor is slightly damaged, and my power cells are only half charged. I guess now I'll see if I really do have what it takes to be a hero.....

Once I stopped letting my insecurity get the better of me, Pavel took us towards the Slaad device. Along the way, a Slaad jumped us, but he gets eliminated quickly. He did come up out of the sand, all ninja like. That worries me.

Later on, we get attacked by more of them, and while we prevail. The Kid is hurt again (and not just regular wounds; he got poisoned too). Anodyne heals him, but I worry about her. It's like she takes on the wounds of the person she heals, and it knocks her out.

When we finally arrive at the device, there's one Slaad there. But it's one big fucking Slaad. I try and blind it, but it has no effect. Startide does something to the gravity around it, and no effect. Warlock can only read that it must protect "the portal". It makes an attempt to hurt my mind, but fails. Kid attacks it, and actually makes it move. I blast it once with a laser, but Startide shows some creativity, making the gravity around it's body split between low gravity around it's upper body, and high body around it's lower body. Finally, it's out.

I inspect the device (later realizing not as much as I should have, as I was nervous about my power cells being almost depleted).  There's cables leading from it to boxes. Some I learn are power cells; the rest are controllers of some sort. I want to take them all and destroy the device, but the others convince me not to do so, as we might need it if I can't get the ship to warp back to our world. As much as I hate to admit it, they have a point.

We make it back to the ship, and after Startide gets it level, I set to work jury rigging the dimensional warp drive. Once I feel I've done all I can to get it working, we all strap in, and I attempt to get us home. It's not an easy trip; the ship feels like it's in the middle of a major earthquake. Pretty much everyone vomits (though I actually remain fine). We make it back to what appears to be our world. To make sure, I try my CHESS communicator. I get a response from them, and I silently thank God we made it. I tell them we need a pick up, and inquire on the team I requested back in Science City. I'm told they are still there, so I inform them they need to arrest Dr Robson, and that the torch on the Colossus in the center of the city needs to be dismantled ASAP.

Suddenly, Pavel and the other Russians start to scream. Parts of their skin turn black and fall off. All but one of them dies, and while Anodyne tries to heal him, her power doesn't work. The guy is in bad shape, and now so is Anodyne. My gut clenches. I failed to save these men, even though they dug their own graves years ago. I just hope their deaths aren't in vain.

As I wait for the pickup to arrive, I realize that I never did inspect that device as well as I should have. if it was a portal, is it one that leads to our world, or somewhere else? The Slaad pose a threat to our world, and need to be stopped. At least I now know how to control this dimension drive, so if I can build a new, better model, we can go back to the Shadow Realm, and hopefully destroy that gate. That's if CHESS will allow it. Then again, can I trust CHESS with the ability to travel to other dimensions? The Russians had the tech, and Robson's machine must be based on it. It's all ready out there, so I guess keeping it from CHESS isn't really going to stop others from using it.

I need a hot bath, and more importantly, a good meal. I wonder if Modi's old quarters still has any of that mead he used to brew left. Cause I really need a drink right now. After that, i need to repair and recharge my armor. I'm sure the world will still be here tomorrow. I'm done playing hero for today.

[The end for now]

Oh, and as an alternative to the suit in that sketch, I was wondering what people think of another image I have for Glare. It's an image I commissioned for a villain I call Lighthouse, which was drawn by Dan Houser (who does all the art for the ICONS rpg). I really like the image, and given the suit having a more retro (imho) look, might fit better for the concept.

What did you think of the other image I posted? I'm torn over which one might actually be used for his suit now

Paul,

Since I work from 11 PM to 7:30 Am every week, I'm used to being up that late. Plus we didn't finish until about 1:50, and I didn't home until close to 3 (cause I had to wait for a bus, then walk from the closest stop).

I'm typing this on my laptop from the infirmary at Black Mesa. A lot has happened since my last entry.

After getting most of us back from the Shadow Dimension, I called CHESS for a pick up. A transport chopper arrived with some Knights, along with a man we call "The Octopus". Why is he called that? Well, he kind of looks like Doctor Octopus from the Spiderman comic books, without the metallic tentacles. He's an autistic genius who builds most of the hi tech weapons and other equipment CHESS uses. He's far more intelligent than I am. He's off putting, but the man is one of the greatest scientific minds I know.

Anyway, he detects radiation on all of us, so we're ordered to stay by the vehicle. The Moevian does something shortly after (or at least it looked like he did; I didn't ask), and suddenly, the radiation is gone. The Knights ferry us back to Black Mesa, and I learn warped back somewhere in Utah.

I check in on whether Robson was taken into custody, and find out he got away before they could grab him. I'm convinced we have a mole in CHESS (again!). This is not good.

When we get back to Black Mesa, I exit my armor, and send it to my lab, so I can prep it for repairs. It took a slight beating when we fought the zomborgs, and the power cells are kind of low. After that, we're all taken to be examined, while Yuri (the last Russian we met in the Shadow Realm) and Startide are rushed to be treated for whatever killed Pavel and the Captain.

They run all kinds of routine tests on us, but the Moevian isn't being that cooperative. He keeps asking to be taken to his embassy, and like I did before, the medics tell him there is none. How does he not know all his people left Earth after the White Event?

I contact the liaison for the team I was once part of, but he's giving me the cold shoulder. I don't think they believe me when I tell them about the Slaad. While I'm on the phone with him, Amazon and Lamplighter show up. They're two more experienced metahumans working for CHESS. Amazon convinces the Moevian to go into quarantine, since he won't let them take his blood for testing. They leave afterwards, which is good cause Lamplighter freaks me out. As much as I sometimes envy those who have internal powers, I'm glad mine come from the armor. I'd rather be a human in a tin can that someone who looks like a human shaped amoeba wearing a green cloak!

The Octopus comes in as well, and tells me my armor will be fully repaired in about an hour or so. That guy is real creepy, but damn is he efficient!

Sometime later, a cook comes in, asking us what we want to eat. I decide on the Venison Meatloaf, when the cook starts suggesting we all try the Chili. For some reason, I start liking that idea, and Nemesis Kid is so excited, he goes to hi five the cook. Before he does, the Moevian yells out a warning, and Kid pulls back. The cook is acting strangely, trying to touch kid's face. Kid hits him, and shit hits the fan.

While Kid and the other guy (who I later learn calls himself Stormbringer) deal with the cook, I run out of the room, and get the guards. Except things turn for the worse because Kid and bringer have KILLED the fucking cook! Shit! This is bad. The guards are pointing their guns at them, and Kid pulls some crazy stunt you see in a kung fu movie, side stepping the Knight, and punching the butt of his rifle into his face, knocking him out. The other guard starts acting like the cook, and bringer goes invisible, and disarms him. He then shoots the Knight in the knee.

At this point, I hit the alarm, and go running to get my armor. I encounter Amazon and Lamplighter on the way, and try and tell them what is going on, but they ignore me. I get halfway to my armor when I'm telepathically contacted by Nexus, the powerful Psionic who works for CHESS. he orders me back to the lab without my armor, because he feels I can keep everyone calm. Yeah right, like that worked when i called in the knights! Still, he out ranks me, so I turn around, and head back the way I came.

I find Kid staggering in the hall, acting doped up. Anodyne must have healed him, which means he was hurt. I slap him a few times to get him out of it. Lamplighter staggers out of the room too, his inner light very dim. He looks weak. I ignore him while I get Kid back to normal. I later learn that he and Amazon slugged each other unconscious. We go back into the room, and the Moevian lets us know that whatever this thing is, it's going to where Yuri is.

We run to the room they're operating on him, but get there too late. It takes over his body, and proclaims itself a god! I'm wearing those patient wraps and underwear, and we're facing off with John Carpenter's The Thing. I'm dead meat!

Kid and Bringer blast it; not sure what the Moevian does. Yuri's body contorts and as the being screams. I grab the defibrillator paddles, and shock it's head. It goes nuts, hits me, and I slam against the wall. The others attack it again, and I lunge again with the paddles. Yuri's body explodes when I touch him with the paddles, but his parts all dissipate.

The Moevian tells us that the being escaped. Great. We brought back some other dimensional, non-corporeal being back with us. I keep fucking things up. At least now my superiors are taking our story seriously, and work on getting a court order to allow us to dismantle the Orichalcum from the torch in the Colossus of Science City.

Now that CHESS is taking me seriously, they finally got a court order so we can take care of that potential gateway for the Slaad to invade from the Shadow Dimension.

Manning met us on the roof of his building. He was pretty pissed off about this, and I am sure he was miffed at me for representing CHESS. He's my boss, so I may just be out of a regular job. Not that I care right now; keeping demonic frog men from another dimension from invading Earth is more important than stroking Manning's ego. That lawyer of his is there; she's a hellion herself! Nemesis Kid ticks her off a little; he's got balls!

Anyway, Stormbringer, the Kid, the Moevian and I go to remove the stuff from the torch on the Colossus. There's only room for two of us, so Kid and I go in, as we have more practical experience with this kind of stuff. The other guys are heavy hitters, so it was a good thing we went in.

While I'm working on removing the pieces of Orikalk, something is coming up the arm. Kid spots it, and it appears to be an armored man. They tussle, and I notice it, and try blasting it. I sear through part of the armor, but it nails me back kind of hard. I get knocked out of the torch, and grab a railing so as not to fall (I could fly, but I am trying to get my bearings, as I wasn't expecting it to his hit so hard).

The four of us fight with it, and it's tough. My armor takes serious damage; worse than when we fought the zomborgs. At one point, Kid breaks the railing, saving me from getting hit by one of it's blasts! He also pushed the Moevian out of the way of one as well.

Stormbringers calls up a storm, but it does nail him, and he goes over. the Moevian gets impaled on claws that sprout from it's hands. It then targets Stormbringer and I, and I get hit with another blast that almost wrecks my armor, and knocks me out cold.

When I wake up here in the infirmary, I get the rest of the story:

Nemesis Kid did a leap off the torch, and lands on the armored man (which we find out was a robot of some kind). He's able to beat it down, but he almost passes out himself. That kid is pretty damn tough with those gauntlets. He's pretty spunky too.  Anyway, Stormbringer saves us all by manipulating the wind currents of the storm he called up to slow us down as we were all falling.

So here I am, in the infirmary. I got one nasty black eye from the demon, and my jaw hurts. I'm pretty sure I have at least 4 cracked ribs. The Moevian is looking better; I'm kind of amazed because he was impaled by both sets of claws. Stormbringer seems to be ok, and Kid's just a little worse for wear.

I don't know if Manning had a hand in that robot attacking us, or if he's really ignorant of some of the people who work for him doing illegal experiments on his dime. When I heal up, I think I need to sit down with Carter, and have a long talk about his father. While I'm at it, I should probably help him finish that suit we're working on.

As for Glare: The Octopus came to see me earlier. He handed me a set of blueprints. They look like the Glare suit, but I see he made a few improvements: more armor (which I was planning on doing anyway), and some other stuff I need to decipher.

With Elusion, Dark Warrior and Modi gone, the world is a darker place. Incorporeal Demons. Extradimensional Frog Men. Illegal experiments by corporations. Robots with high power energy weapons. The more I think about it, the more I start to realize I'm more out of my league than I first thought.

However, as much as I doubt myself, the fact remains that I'm seem to be the leader of a new team of metahumans dragged into working for CHESS. Like it or not, I have to step up. I've got plenty of doubt, and lots of regret. But I also have a lot of anger. Anger at all these inhuman things that want to harm humanity.

When I get out of here, I think I'm going to talk to The Octopus, and see if we adapt one of those Slaad power cells for my armor. And if CHESS will let me, maybe, just maybe, I'll see if I can work some of this Oricalchum into Glare MK II. These new guys are all more powerful than me, and I need an edge. I need to be ready, because it feels like a storm is coming, and I don't have a raincoat.....

Out of character note: Man, this was a rough one! With all the heavy hitters gone, Glare is finding himself actually getting hit, and more importantly, getting hurt. Before, Modi and Dark Warrior would draw most attacks, but with them gone, Glare is now one big shining metal target. My armor was wrecked, I got knocked out, and if Stormbringer hadn't done a power stunt, would likely be dead. And I loved every minute of it! I especially love all this mystical and other dimensional threats, as it allows me to play on my character feeling out of his depth (being a scientist and a high tech hero, this stuff freaks him out). He is now the expert on Dimensional Physics (Wally knew that, but he's gone, so now I'm it).

John suggested I take a weakness (I'm assuming it would be a Phobia) based around his guilt. He feels guilty about Brother Deacon dying, and not being there when Elusion died. It fits, so I'm sure we'll discuss how that will affect the character. I'm also starting to have  him go a little mad scientist, trying to find ways of making his armor more powerful, as he feels some of the threats he's run into recently require more than his armor can currently handle. Should be fun to run with that long term.

Anyway, need to get some sleep. Hope you enjoyed the new entry for our last session

IIRC, Modi went back to Asgard, and Dark Warrior basically remade the universe, dying in the process. I know Oni wrote about DW's end, and John did cover it in one of his session reports. I wasn't there when it happened, as it was around the time my dad passed away. Though Oni has jokingly told me out of character, I should design a device that will allow me to find "specks" of the Dark Warrior, as they are scattered around the universe now. Don't know what I'd do with them though Tongue

(New journal entry....)

It's been awhile since I've written anything down. Between repairing the Glare armor, dealing with the lawsuit from Manning, and writing two papers on Dimensional Physics (and the speaking engagements due to those papers, both for CHESS science staff and scientists across the world), I haven't done much field duty of late. However, I just got back from our latest mission, and felt the need to write it down.

Dr. Robson, now calling himself Dr. Robug, supposedly joined the group known as the Octagon. The others battled a giant spider-like robot in Times Square while I was away. Robug was in it, but he escaped, and landed on Island Zero. Just as I got back to Black Mesa, I learn we are going there to apprehend him.

Since my armor took a heavy beating in the Shadow Dimension, I'm tasked to be in reserve, while the rest sneak onto the island (as our going there violates the Zero Proclamation).

Shortly after they landed, I lost communication with them from the mini-sub. After a few hours, I was ordered to fly in low, locate them, and make an extraction from the island.

I flew in just above the water, avoiding radar detectors from China, Japan, Russia and the USA. As I flew deeper inland, I hit something that cause me to lose my bearings. Once I regained them, I was out of touch with the sub. I also discovered that this island was much bigger than satellite images show (I cover this in more detail in my special report for CHESS). Shortly after being disoriented, I'm attacked by some kind of robotic insect. It gives me a short struggle, but I am able to dispose of it.

My battle with the robot attracts the attention of my team mates, and the Moevian mind links me with the team. Stormbringer is missing, but they've contacted Bad Shepherd, the island's caretaker. I fly over to them, and tell them about the extraction order. They inform me that Robug has a base on the island, as well as a cadre of female metahumans he created. As much as I want to follow orders, I agree with the rest that we need to take Robug and his metahumans down first.

We start our way towards The Hive (as Robug calls his base), but are attacked by robotic ants. We're able to dispose of them. With Startide making everyone weightless, they hold onto me, and we continue on. More of the flying insectbots attack us, and I have to save Kid Nemesis from falling, while the Moevian grappled with one of them. We destroyed most of them, fighting a running battle the rest of the way to the Hive.

Once we got there, we get attacked by metahumans. Some woman with wings attacks me with clawed hands. My armors prevented her from harming me, but she caused serious damage to it. I dropped Kid, but he was able to grab onto the woman, and turned his gauntlets to phosphorous, and struck her in the face, knocking her out. While I was still recovering from her attack, Kid used her wings like a glider, and landed safely.

Startide and I flew to the top of the Hive, and encountered 4 more metahumans. Startide took one out with a Gravity Warp. I then blinded 2 others (and the remaining bot) with a blinding flash. However, things didn't go so well. One of the women had prehensile hair, and was able to find me, and she slammed me into the side of the structure. The other one created a swarm of butterflies out of nowhere, and they swarmed around Startide.

Shepherd took out the last bot with a rock, and the Moevian took out on of the 3 metahumans, and with Shepherd's help, knocked her out. Kid started to scale the side of the Hive with his gauntlets, but was attacked by an african-american woman with a whip. Kid took her out, but got knocked out in the process, and lost one of his gauntlets. I finally got free of the hair, and with Startide's help, took out the last metahuman.

(continuing journal entry...)

While Shepherd, Startide and the Moevian start to enter the Hive, I search for Kid. He's out when I find him (as I mentioned earlier in this entry), and try to wake him up. He's out real bad, and eventually the Moevian has to assist in getting him back on his feet.

Startide and Shepherd are inside causing all kind of commotion; I later learned they were confronted by more female metahumans and Dr. Robug himself). Shepherd goes right for Robug, while Startide manipulates gravity to use The Hive against his metahuman agents.

Eventually Startide is taken out by a metahuman who can turn into a gaseous form. With Kid awake, I fly into the Hive to help Startide, unaware she's out. As I head towards her, I fall prey to the same metahuman, but Startide is able to recover, and she wisks us both away.

Around this time, Stormbringer (who had some strange encounters while separated from us, hears Shepherd taking the Hive apart. He heads towards us, and encounters Go Girl, Robug's speedster minion. She has Shepherd's staff, and he takes it from her, and while she tries to take it back from him, he flies higher than she can reach, and continues towards us.

When I recover from the gas, I see some of the metahumans fleeing the Hive through a whole Shepherd made. Kid knocks one out, and I try to blind one, but her shield reflects it, and I'm blinded! Thankfully, the Moevian has us all mind linked, so I know what happened next.

Startide took out shield lady with her gravity powers, causing her to go down, and making her shield weigh so much it knocked her cold. Robug was trying to escape with Dr. Lloyd (who at the time I thought needed rescuing, but I learned otherwise later). The Moevian tracked them with his mind powers, while Stormbringer returned Shepherd's staff to him, for which he was very thankful (From what little I could glean, he uses it to control some of the creatures on the island, and Robug stole it to control them himself)

Startide turned herself intangible somehow, and went after Robug & Lloyd in the tunnels. Robug used his bowel disruptor on her, but she was able to shrug off its effects and took him out, before she was in turn taken out again by the woman with the gaseous form. The Moevian and Stormbringer went after Startide, with Stormbringer causing gale force winds. He caused the gaseous metahuman to dissapate, but not before she knocked out Lloyd, who had been turned into a metahuman by Robug (and who had his own sinister agenda it seems).

After the Hive collapsed, we regrouped with Shepherd. He helped us restrain the surviving metahumans. I learned that Kid accidentally killed one, and another died because their life span had been greatly shortened due to the process of gaining powers. Thanks to the Moevian, we learned that Robug stole the process for giving people metahuman abilities from CHESS. We also learned that Robug had been lying to the world, and had never been in touch with The Octagon, let alone join their ranks.

As for Lloyd, he planned on betraying Robug, and become Doctor Saturday, the cartoon criminal. I felt bad for Lloyd. He was autistic, but a genius, and when Robug used the metahuman process on him, it corrupted this brilliant, yet simple man into a criminal mindset. Once again something good in this world was twisted by the corruption of super powers. I had thought that the White Event changed that, but it appears I was wrong.

Shepherd gave us a plant that helped us heal a bit. He let Stormbringer have extra, as a way of thanking him for returning his staff. We learned that the island was created by a group called The Artists, who serve another group called The Elders. The Elders supposedly created all life in the universe, and that the island exists everywhere (as in every planet in the universe, and possibly in alternate ones as well), much like the mythical city of Tanelorn from the novels of Michael Moorcock. This is why it's larger when we landed on it compared to it's size from satellite images. Our satellites only pick up a small portion of the island, because that's the only part that is physically on Earth itself at this time.

He told us that these elders test every race, and that one day it will be our turn. I made sure to put in a special report to my superiors regarding this, as I have some theories I hope to work on.

Armed with this knowledge, we took our prisoners back with us, and handed them over to CHESS.

Needless to say, this last mission was very disturbing to me on a few levels. Seeing Dr. Lloyd corrupted like that saddened me. The revelation about these elders and this eventual test humanity will have to endure deeply concerns me. Hopefully I can come up with some contingency plans to make us pass the test; I just hope the upper echelons of CHESS take my concerns seriously this time. They doubted me during the Shadow Realm incident, and if not for the Slaad attempting to cross over into our world, they'd likely still be doubting me. They need to get their heads out of their asses and face facts: Earth is starting to be looked upon by powerful forces outside of our solar system, and we need to stop looking inward, and preparing for the troubles yet to come.

Damn, I wish Wally was still around. He'd understand the gravity of the situation. Elusion likely would too. Modi would just drink another mead and tell me not to worry, that we could handle any threat to Earth. If they were still around, I'd probably not worry so much. But they're not, so the burden lies on my shoulders.

I have no natural powers, just a fancy suit of armor with a bunch of high tech gizmos built in. Yet I seem to be the only person who grasps just how grave the future might be for the human race. My new team mates are powerful, but will they be enough to turn back what the future holds? I just don't know.....

(New Entry....)

It's been a week or so since we came back from Island Zero. I've been working non stop in the lab. CHESS finally gave me the green light to upgrade the Glare armor. I've increased the defensive armored layers, so it can take more damage. I also increased the battery output. Lastly, I finally installed the hologram emitters. They take a lot of power (need to work on reducing that), but now I can creating images out of light. No sound, but it should work well in tricking people. We'll see.

Now to see about finding out how to replicate the reflective properties in that Shield we recovered from the metahuman Echo.

Still no word from the higher ups about that request for funding and a lab to work on that project to breach the barrier on Island Zero. If we could really see what's there, maybe we can prepare for what's to come better.

As an aside, I've noticed that the Moevian seems restless of late. That worries me as well, but everyone else believes it's because CHESS won't let him go to the abandoned Moevian embassy on Earth.

Well, back to the lab. I want to try and increase the power output on my laser circuitry, and see if I can boost its effectiveness. Then I want to talk with the Octopus about that life support system he said I should incorporate. After that woman who could turn into ether, I think I need some kind of protection from gas attacks.

After that, I should call Carter. I haven't spoken to him in awhile, and he still hasn't responded to my last set of design modifications for that suit I was helping him make. I suspect he's angry with me when he found out I was working for CHESS. I need to have a sit down, and explain that I believe his father had a hand in, or knows something about my own father's disappearance.

So much to do, and not enough time in a day to do it.

That was a pretty funny moment last night. That's what I get for assuming someone named Echo would have sonic powers, especially when they are carrying a short, round & shiny shield!

Well, until Glare actually studies the shield, he won't know that  Grin

Of course, when he figures that out, he'll be sorely disappointed.

It's been awhile since I've written any journal entries, as I've been so busy of late.

After the events I last documented, I've spent a lot of time in the Dark Mesa engineering labs, improving on my armor. I was able to almost double the protective coating, while keeping the weight distribution the same. I also increased my power output, so my energy supply won't run low as fast. I also increased the out put of my laser blast, so that it is slightly more effective. Lastly, I was able to create a holographic emitter, so I can now create images to distract opponents with. I was trying to reduce it's power cost, but I screwed up somehow, and blew out power in the labs.

At that point, I was called in by the brass. I figured I was in deep shit over the power outage, but it turns out something else had priority. Seems my new team mates had been dispatched to deal with a threat to Prince Drakkar Island, home to the head of CHESS R&D. I'm a novice compared to this guy, except when it comes to Dimensional Physics (as I'm the one who invented the science after our incursion to the Shadow Realm).

To make sure I got there ASAP, they had my armor attached to a booster rocket, and launched me up into the Upper Atmosphere. I almost passed out from the lower level of air; I made a note to add life support systems next time I can get into the lab. Once the rocket did it's job, I engaged my internal propulsion system, and rocketed toward the island (no pun intended!)

When I got there, I found both Kid Nemesis AND Captain Atlas out cold. This kind of freaked me out, as Atlas is the strongest being on the planet! The rest filled me on the situation, and I hacked into the computer system for the island, BINARY, and got the access codes. We went inside, and using a schematic BINARY provided, took Atlas and the Kid to the medical center.

After getting them taken care of, we found where Harold Van Irye, aka the Quidnunc was. He was supposed to be alone, but when we opened a camera view, we saw some skull headed guy in pirates clothes was sawing his head off with a cutlass!

We rushed down there, and after a short fight, defeated the skull pirate (known as Jolly Rodger). Startide and Warlock took Quidnunc's head to the Null room, keeping his brain from dying.

The Ancient Mariner was also in the complex, and after trying to both gas and electrocute him using the bases defenses, we trapped him between two titanium walls.

While all this was going on, and army of Deep Ones (a race that live under the ocean) were storming the beach, supposedly summoned by a creature named Deep Blue. Startide and I activated the bases external defenses, which held them back for the time being.

(to be continued)

Warlock tried to communicate with Deep Blue via Telepathy, but she put the whammy on him, and he started to rant that he had to be with his love. Startide used a gravity warp on him, then I knocked him out with a synaptic scrambler (a weapon I had procured from the base's arsenal). Kid woke him up by splashing water on him, and Warlock seemed to have regained his senses.

While all this was going on, Stormbringer was talking to the Mariner. Mariner told him that he was a thrall of something called  "The Spirit of the Sea". This unseen force had communicated with Stormbringer before I arrived, and had told him it would enjoy eating his brain. From what I gather, some suspect it's an Illithid, which is a telepathic alien race.

Mariner demanded to be set free, and when we wouldn't, he blew his conch. He was able to regain control of Deep Blue, and along with Rock Lobster and some animated being made of seaweed, along with the Deep Ones, prepared to assault the complex again. We decided there and then to take Mariner out of the fight. Kid and I went to where he was trapped. Kid disarmed him, and I knocked him out with the scrambler.

Deep Blue, free from Mariner's control, started her singing again. Warlock, Startide and Stormbringer all heard the song, and barely resisted being lulled by it's mind controlling quality. Rock Lobster broke into the base, wanting tobacco that Mariner promised him. Kid went to fill his pipe with it, but Spirit of the Sea somehow mind controlled him, and Kid knocked the pipe out of his claw, angering the creature.

Stormbringer took Mariner's conch, and blew it, giving him control over the various creatures. He ordered them all to leave, and they did. As we knew Spirit of the Sea was still around, Startide and I searched the labs for anything that could help us locate and attack it. We found an ectoplasmic scanner, and an ectoplasmic blaster. After figuring out how they worked, we searched the base. We found Spirit (and confirmed it was an Illithid), and I blasted it with the weapon, destroying it's astral form.

Breathing a sigh of relief, we all locked down the base, and started helping the base staff with medical treatment in the medical bay, until CHESS sent reinforcements to secure the island completely.

It's sad about what happened to Quidnunc. I could learn a lot from this guy. Still, I learned about BINARY, and now know how to use the EP scanner and blaster.

Once we got back to base, I went through debrief, and filed a report for the higher ups. Then I hit the sack. I needed rest before heading back to the lab again (if they let me!)

[Sorry I took so long with this one. Been kind of busy]

In which I meet Scion, and fight my first Movian Meta

I was only able to work in the lab one day, which I got yanked for some field duty again. I was able to lower the power usage of my holograms though, so it wasn't so bad. I did learn that Modi has returned though. I wanted to see him, but they rushed me out of Black Mesa before I could welcome him back. I've still got some of that mead he gave me before he disappeared, so we'll have to sit down and have a tankard or two when this mission is over.

CHESS is launching satellites into space that will release some kind of nanonet around the planet, in the hopes that it will foil Movian cloaking tech. Captain Atlas and Powerhouse are actually lifting the satellites up by hand, and flying them into space! I'm working with Scion, whom I've never met before. She's pretty powerful from what I've read in the data files. She's pretty friendly, though she bust my chops over blasting the back of Modi's head on my first mission (god, that seems so long ago now!).

This is boring duty, but a few hours in, we get a priority alert. Some kind of possible alien craft has crashed in New Jersey, and they've requested metahuman assistance. Scion (who flies much faster than I do) grabs me, and we take off. I tap into local radio stations, and relay to her via communicator what info I can pick up. I really need to get back to the lab so I can finish that holo communications array for my armor!

Anyway, we get there in a few minutes, and it's a fucking disaster area. The ship crashed into an industrial area, and damaged a power plant. Scion goes to help with rescue operations, while I check in with the local law enforcement.
While Scion rescues some civilians, I do a fly over the craft to get a closer look. There's some weird damage to the top; it looks like something crystallized part of the hull! The dome on top has fissures in it, and I can see movement inside.

When Scion rejoins me, she moves in closer (the flames don't bother her; I really need to add that life support function ASAP!), and something inside sends her a telepathic warning. She tells me it was in English, but with a Movian accent! She grabs a girder, and starts to beat at the dome, until she finally breaks through! A Movian leaps out at her, swinging, and they start to tangle.

As I move in closer, I see another humanoid with some kind of black energy surrounding them, and another one that's definitely alien. Scion has thrown the big dude away, and is now flying into the ship. I still hover above, unsure what to do. I see her attack them with the girder, but it disintegrates when it almost touches the crackling dude. She concentrates on the alien looking one more, and it's body contorts (I later learned their bodies are malleable). The crackling dude aims at her back; I fire off four laser blasts to try and prevent him from hitting her. He hits her with his blast, but my laser blasts take him out of the fight.

I go into the ship to check on Scion when the big Movian leaps back in, swinging. He hits my armor once, and the shockwave my internal sensors register freak me out! If I had been wearing my original armor, it would have taken a nasty hit from that. Thank god I improved on that!

Scion starts slugging it out with him, so I check on crackling alien. From what I can discern, he has some kind of anti-matter field surrounding his body. I call CHESS immediately, and tell them we need an anti-matter containment unit. Since they have none, I have to tell them on the fly how to make one!

Scion has thrown the Movian away from the ship. She calls me over the comm, but at that moment, the other alien does some kind of mental attack on me. It fucking hurts, and I scream. Scion rushes back to the ship, and attacks it, but doesn't seem to affect it. I'm pissed, so I fire off four more laser blasts. The first one misses, but the other three nearly cut it in half at the waist! It collapses, and goes kind of gooey everywhere.

The Movian returns, and misses me, but hits Scion. I was going to try out my holograms on him, but Scion flew straight up, and came back down fast. She slammed into the guy, and drove him through the ship into the ground underneath! When she came back up from underneath, she was covered in dirt. I shudder to think what the other guy looks like!

I was checking out the ships systems, when Scion noticed something wrong with the crackling guy. I yelled that he was going to meltdown, so she grabbed him, and flew up towards space. She threw him into orbit, and he blew up. She caught part of the blast, but was able to make it back safely. She likely saved a good portion of the northeastern United States that day. I made sure to tell CHESS to stop making the containment chamber, as it was no longer needed.

When CHESS arrived to take over, we discovered the alien looking one escaped. I was pissed at myself for not keeping a closer eye on it.

Scion tried to tap into the ship's computers, but didn't get far. As no one has my level of skill with computers, she gave me a crash course on the Movian language for the next 2-3 days. Once I was ready, I broke through the encryption, and learned this was a Movian Scout ship. The strong guy was called Atomic Child, and the crackling guy was called Entropy. The alien looking one was called Alien Intelligence. It was from the Confederation, a coalition of alien races who had warred with the Movians in the past. Seems they are skeptical we're the threat the Movians make us out to be, so we might have blundered by attacking it.

However, the bigger discovery was what caused them to crash. They were attacked in space by a being that glowed golden. Whether it was human or Movian, I have no clue. The blast it fired caused their hyperdrive to turn to crystal! They didn't get any energy readings before they crashed; if they had, I could have built a scanner so we could locate this being. We could use an ally like this right now!

Once I got back to Black Mesa, I got a good night's sleep. Then I was back at the lab, working on the suit again. I finally got the Life Support module working. At least now, I can function in space if need be. I also worked out a way to offshoot my holo emitters into a HUD. I can use visual comms inside the armor. More importantly, I can use it to make images outside the armor, so I can share the images with my team mates.

Even better: I found a way to link my armor to all the spy satellites orbiting the planet. That's going to come in handy when we're heading on a mission, as I can get up to date imaging of where ever we have to go. That might allow us to get the drop on our enemies, and not get ambushed. It might not always work, but hey, I couldn't do that before.

I need a shower now. Then I think I'm going to find that overbearing Norse God, and drink some fucking mead. After all that's happened of late, I need a damn drink!

A new journal entry will be up this weekend, as well as the start of one for my new character, Coldsteel. In the interim, here at long last is the completed image for Glare. Everyone at the game last night liked it, and I'm pleased with how it came out:

The Movian War: First Salvo

We were called into a big planning session today, headed by Marshal Strong. Everyone was there, from Captain Atlas down to some new Metahuman named Coldsteel. We were going over plans to deal with the upcoming attack by the Movians against Earth. Captain Warlock kept trying to convince everyone that we needed to find a peaceful solution, and all Captain Atlas wanted to know was when he could smash something.

I did bring up the unknown Meta that was recorded by the Movian scout ship Scion and I encountered in NJ, and Strong confirmed him as Captain Astro, cosmic powered Meta.

I did learn that the Movian are divided into 3 main castes: The Military, the Merchants, the Church. The Military and Church want to destroy us, while the Merchants want to use us for cross breeding, as their race has stagnated, and is slowly dying out. Warlock had learned that the Merchants would attempt a snatch and grab raid to steal as many women as possible before the Military tries to destroy the sun. I also learned the Merchants do have their own cadre of Movian Metas, much like the Military has their Elites.

They also use specially bred troops called Orrush, akin to the Orcs from Tolkein's novels. They also have servants called Drow, much like the evil elves from a popular roleplaying game.

While Warlock was arguing his case for a peaceful resolution again, I got a stream from the nano-net around the planet. The Merchants raiding fleet had arrived, and were all ready engaged with The Top Five, a team of heroes (and as I later learned, Captain Astro). Within seconds, Atlas, Powerhouse & Scion flew into space to join the battle.

Strong divided the rest of us into teams, and started having Gate teleport us into the ships not under attack (and in locations provided by Looker, who can see that far into space from Mesa). I was teamed with Kid Nemesis & Modi. When it was our turn to port, Kid leaps through the gate, instead of letting Modi lead the way. Modi went in after him, and I flew in behind him.

When I got through the gate, I saw we were in a troop pod, and all these Orrush were harnessed in. Some Drow were flying around in Jet Packs, and they were engaged with Kid and Modi. I fired off a series of lasers at some of them, but my second or third shot misfired, and much like my first mission, hit Modi in the back of the head! I'm hoping that the portal threw my targeting sensors off a bit, and that it wasn't me being nervous (which I was).

One of the Drow fired at me, and my armor got peppered with heavy slugs. I actually felt the last two, and was pretty sure one of my ribs got bruised. Now I was getting nervous; I've slugged it out with Movian Elites, and some fucking stromtrooper is damaging my armor with an alien machine gun? I threw up a set of light duplicates of myself to confuse them; now was as good a time as any to try out my new holo emitters.

Modi hit some wicked move with his hammer that took out all the Orrush in their harnesses, but the Drow were unfazed. After awhile, Kid went to some hatch, and went through, trying to reach the ship's bridge. Modi followed shortly after, and I was left alone with the Drow. I blinded them with my armor flash, which caused them to drop their weapons. However, they drew these wicked looking blades, and I knew I was in trouble....

While Kid and Modi took out the ship's bridge and it's crew (including fighting a Meta), I was in a desperate battle with the five Drow. Although blinded, two of them scored hits on my armor, their blades causing damage to it. It was slowly getting wrecked, and I was in deep trouble. Modi and Kid returned to the pod once they had finished wrecking the bridge. In short order, the remaining drow fled into space with their packs.

However, Orrush from another pod were starting to enter the one we had taken out. As the ship was out of action, we decided to pull back. Gate opened a portal, and we retreated back to Black Mesa. I later learned Gate was almost sucked through her own portal to the ship, as we were fighting in a vacuum. Thankfully, Warlock saved her from being killed!

The Battle in space was still going on, but I was pretty much out of commission, as my armor was heavily damaged. An enemy ship had landed in London though, so Kid & Modi, Strong, Startide, Warlock and Coldsteel went to engage them. I got out of my armor (which was sent to the lab for repairs), and started working with Seer on coordinating things from the Mesa. I hated being out of the fight, but my armor was almost totaled.

As I watched my friend port to London, I couldn't help thinking that if these were second stringers compared to the regular Movian military, how hard was it going to be to face the real Movian forces?

I was glad to see my team mates drive the Movians out of London. The remnants of the Merchant caste fleet fled back to their homeworld. Their big snatch and grab had failed. of the 200,000 women they had wanted to abduct, the fled home with 134. That's still too many innocents to lose, but it couldn't be helped. We were caught off guard this time, but Seer assured me next time the nano-net will detect them sooner.

I need to rest now. Tomorrow I have to repair my armor again, so that I'm ready for whatever comes next.

It's been awhile since I've done a journal entry. It's taken me awhile to repair my armor after the battles with the Moevian merchant raiders. On top of that, I had to help Carter Manning finish his Manta suit. He's told me that his father is doing some illegal drilling underwater, and he's concerned that its going to damage the environment. I've agreed to help him go down to the site, and take out the drills. I don't know if anyone else on the team would help. Well, I know Modi would, but I can't say what the others would think. Or what CHESS will think either.

Most of the team was away on another mission when a breaking news story from Japan showed a half dozen Jellymen coming out of the ocean carrying a large gurney with a giant egg on it. I was sent with Magnum, and they let Captain Warlock out of incarceration to assist since he's been cooperating. I wasn't happy when I learned of his apparent betrayal on his last mission, but I've come to respect him for his past efforts with the team.

We flew to Japan, where it turns out that even though my armor looks like one of their anime mechs, Magnum is much more popular than I am! He had to convince the Japanese authorities to let us assist after the man on the comm didn't recognize me!

After a quick discussion with the authorities on scene (and having the local press in our faces), Magnum flies towards the egg, and slices it open with his blades. This gets the Jellymen moving, and they start to attack him. The egg cracks open, and this creature starts expanding. It lets out some kind of gas, and the civilians on the beach starting suffering ill effects. My armor protected me, and Warlock tried to use his TK to shield the people. Magnum was fighting the creature and the Jellymen, and I tried to assist him with the Lightning gun I had taken from the armory (we all took one, as the Jellymen are susceptible to electrical attacks).

I was able to destroy one of the Jellymen, and the rest started to attack me after Magnum flew too high for them to reach. He took them out with some phosphorus grenades, so I flew up and blinded the creature, as it had been tearing up Magnum pretty good. His attacks didn't look like it was doing much damage, so I fire some laser blasts into it's mouth. That just pissed it off, and it went to snap at me.

Magnum put a magnetic field around my armor to protect me, and threw some knockout grenades into it's mouth. It started to go down, so I backed off. I caught a brief telepathic flash from Warlock that salt was the cure for the gas the creature emitted. The creature went out, which kind of shocked me, seeing as how it was shrugging off Magnum's attacks.

Warlock informed us that the creature had come from Island Zero, and was supposed to be part of "the test" we learned about when we met The Sheppard. As it was stolen, he was angry, but told Warlock it was no longer his concern.

As the JDF moved in to assist the civilians injured by the gas. Magnum started to drag the creature into the ocean by it's tail. It woke up, and ran deeper into the ocean. Magnum let it go, as it was no longer a threat. He went to get stitched up, while I coordinated with the JDF on securing and helping the injured.

While we were both distracted, Warlock took off. When I learned this, this sudden rage came over me. I started to plan to carve him up with my lasers, and stick his organs into jars. He made a fool of both Magnum and myself, and he would pay! Then, I'd seek out the Blue Blood, and show him that I was smarter than the rest of the Octagon! I'd show all these fools that I was one of the smartest men on the planet!

As I started to formulate my revenge on Warlock, an echo of his last telepathic transmission "The cure is Salt" surfaced, and I came to my senses. I started to feel sick to my stomach. I had been told that my brain functions had entered into superhuman state, and I obviously suffered a bout of Metapsychosis. I almost threw up in armor at that point, disgusted at the thoughts that had come over me.

So this is what the Moevians feared about metahumans? This wasn't good. Somehow, Warlock's mental powers had helped me overcome succumbing to the Humaru state. As pissed as I was that he took off like a criminal, it seems I owed him one. First chance I get, I need a full physical at Black Mesa. That was a close call. Had I given in to those dark urges, I have no doubt that Magnum would have carved me to pieces.

More than ever, I'm afraid. Afraid of what I could become, but worse, of what my more powerful team mates could become. If one of them ever turns like that, how in God's name will I be able to stop them? I'm going to have to make more improvements on my armor, and just to be safe, I need to build a fail safe into it. Since I can't trust the team (being susceptible to this like I am), I'll give it to Carter. If I ever turn, he can shut my armor down so I don't kill anyone.

I feel really tired now. Bad enough that we have an alien race trying to wipe us out. Now I have to worry about turning on my own team mates. How much worse can things get?

Magnum and I got reamed for the debacle in Japan the other day. All because Warlock escaped. They were the ones who let him go with us, and without any wait of containing him if he tried a stunt like this, yet it's our faults?

To make up for our blunder, we've been assigned to investigate a Moevian sighting. After the Moevian Merchant Guild tried to steal as many women as possible, there have been Moevian sightings across the globe multiple times a day. There's a lot of Moevian tech floating around, since many ships crashed, and stuff got scavenged before CHESS or local governments could close off the crash sites.

Anyway, the reason why this sighting is considered legitimate is because a local gang has been using Moevian weapons. That gives credence to this specific sighting.

We started off undercover in a fake florist truck, but ditched it to get a closer look. We flew up to the roof. We detect a spherical object coming up the stairs to the roof, and prepare to confront it. Shortly thereafter, we're attacked by what appears to be Ether. Magnum flies upward, trying to get away, while I wait for whatever is coming up the stairs. Magnum tries to burn the gas being, but it seems unaffected by his grenades. It then attacks me, forcing me to try and elude it (as my lasers don't seem to be affecting it).

Magnum turns his attention to whatever is coming up the stairs, which turns out to be Fantasia, who was one of Dr. Robug's metahuman servants on Island Zero. He attacks her by flinging metal at her, but the sphere we detected was some kind of force field, and protected her from being hurt. Behind her was another meta, who flew over her into the air, and attacked me. He turned out to be Red Vespa, who died during the battle in the House of Wonders that led to the White Event.

While the gas being started to corrode my armor, I took out Vespa with two quick laser blasts. I kept evading the gas being, when Annihilator showed up. He's Moevian, but like Red Vespa, he died just before the White Event. I wonder if their resurrections are related to REDACTED return. Something to ponder.

He and Fantasia double teamed Magnum. I tried to blind him, but he laughed it off. I had read how powerful he was, and knew Magnum and I were in Deep Shit. My armor was getting badly damaged by the corrosive attack by the gas being, so I flew straight up, hoping to lure it into space. I considered flying close to a jet, hoping it would get sucked into a jet engine, when Annihilator knocked out Magnum.

I raced down, past the gas being, and caught him. Except my armor doesn't have strength enhancing servos, so I couldn't hold his weight. We crashed into the building, and I got pinned under Magnum. We were fucking toast!

While trapped under Magnum, the gas being returned, and changed back to human form. Not wanting to take any chances, I nailed him with 2 laser blasts, taking him out.

Annihilator kept ranting and raving about how he was claiming Earth in the name of the Moevian empire, and how we were weak, etc, etc. He was obviously delusional, and most likely had succumbed to metapsychosis. Magnum came too, and sprung to his feet, facing off with Annihilator. Fantasia used her powers to lift me off the ground, but kept me restrained. She struck me, but I didn't feel it. I blinded her again, while Magnum unleashed a torrent of attacks on Annihilator. His metal spheres kept hitting his force field, barely penetrating. His blades though, cut through; He slashed him good, and before he burst into a puddle of blood inside his own force field, he said "Not again...".

Fantasia fled, and I chased her, even though my armor was at about 20% power. I Fired a series of laser blasts at her, hitting her three times. She was still getting away. Magnum attempted to throw a fuel tanker truck at her, but misjudged his aim, and it struck the J-Train platform exploding. He was knocked out again, and the explosion caused a lot of damage. I saw a J Train coming, and debated what to do. I considered flying into it, hoping my momentum would stop it, but realized if I couldn't lift Magnum, I wouldn't do squat to the train. I flew towards Magnum, and slapped him hard with my gauntlet, waking him up. I told him he had to save the train, and he used his magnetic powers to guide if over the damaged track, so that it could continue on.

After that. we called in emergency services to help the injured, and remove the dead. Vespa and the gas dude were taken into custody. Magnum and I were treated for our wounds, and we went back to Black Mesa to file our reports. I expect we're in even more trouble than we were after Japan.

However, when we got back to Black Mesa, we didn't get called in for an ass chewing. We did our debrief, and that was it. I went to bed, because the next day, I was in the lab repairing my armor. Took me two days to get it back to full capacity.

After fighting this gaseous villain (who I found out calls himself Sublime), I decided I needed to do something about opponents who can't be affected normally. He's the third villain I've encountered who could ignore physical attacks while out of phase (Death Ray being the first, and Red Devil being the second). Since I have all the specs for the Spectral Analyzer and Ectoplasmic cannon that Quidnunc designed. Using his specs and my knowledge of Dimensional Physics, I designed and built a Phase Analyzer for my armor. Now I can detect the frequency of items, so if they're out of phase, I'll know.

Once that was done, I started work on a Phase Compensator, to allow me to modulate my suit's light blasts to affect insubstantial beings. I've got it calibrated just right; now to run a diagnostic on it. Power's on...looks good...oh crap....

Fucking classic!  Gotta love those horror roles. The 20 on the gas tanker attack was just classic. I was still laughing about it on the ride home.

[new journal entry]

As I write this, I'm lying in bed at the Black Mesa medical center. After my recent adventure, I'm in pretty bad shape. I guess I should start from the beginning.

After the Phase Modulator test went awry, I found myself still in my lab, but it was destroyed. I was unhurt, not a scratch on me. My vision was a little blurry. I went to get an extinguisher, but my hand passed through it!

I realized that I had phased out of sync with reality, but wasn't sure which sub-dimension I was in yet. I saw various creatures moving in the air around me, but they didn't seem to notice me. These Xenophasic entities, as I dubbed them, looked like mollusks, crabs, etc. I walked through the door, and saw emergency teams rushing to deal with the fire. After 1 or 2 of them went through me without any sign they noticed me, I decided to head up from the sub levels into the Mesa itself.

As I entered Black Mesa itself, I felt this urge to keep going up, and realized that in this realm, I could actually "fly". I went up, out of Black Mesa, and started going up into the sky. I saw more of these xenophasic entities, but again, they left me alone.

As I got higher into the sky, I heard a voice call out "Hey Blue! Where you going?". I turned towards the voice, and saw what appeared to be an apparition of a young boy. When he realized I wasn't this Blue, he said "You're not Blue", and and started to leave. I tried to catch up to him, but he was way too fast, and disappeared in short order. Realizing I would never catch up to him, I decided to continue upwards.

[continuing journal entry]

I kept going upwards, and I noticed some crustacean looking entity was following me. I moved towards it, and sure enough, it attacked me! I tried to avoid it, but it was too fast, and eventually some kind of feeler hit me, but didn't hurt much. I turned on it, and struck out with my fist (since I was without my armor), and it dissipated into a cloud of smoke.

Not seeing any more creatures moving to attack, I continued upwards, until I was above the clouds. I've been up here before in my armor, but without it, the view was just spectacular. I started to notice a light far above me, that seemed to be part of this dimension. I started to move towards it, but that young voice warned me not to. I turned towards it, and the young boy was hovering a distance away from me. I asked him why I shouldn't go there, and he told me because if I did, I'd never return. Obviously that was a doorway to Heaven, and not being dead, I didn't belong there.

I asked him who he was, and he told me his name was Malcolm. He had mistaken me for someone he called Blue, who he claimed was a character from a tv show. After a little coaxing, he told me Blue was Joey from the tv sitcom Friends. WTF?

After some more questions, I learned that Malcolm had gained his ability after the White Event. He can leave his body behind, and traverse this plain. He said that Blue taught him how to use his powers, and that he was his friend. They'd play games together. When I asked him what kind, he told me that Blue would tell him to go somewhere, and then tell him what he saw. When I asked him where he did this, he told me Black Mesa! This was getting interesting now!

Malcolm took me to meet Blue, and we ended up in the women's locker room. The kid thought it was cool to see female agents naked, and I told him it was wrong. he got upset, and left, and I followed him. He looks about 15, but he acts much younger.

We ended up in one of the sub levels, and there was some large, snake-like thing moving in and out of the walls in a circular motion. Malcolm warned me it was dangerous, but when I asked why, he said because Blue told him so. We went deeper into the sub levels to avoid it (as it was going up), when a man walked through the wall...

The man saw me, and looked surprised; sure enough, he looked like Matt LeBlanc from Friends. He looked at me thoughtfully, and said "So you survived"; he sounded disappointed. He told Malcolm to go home; the kid seemed unsure, but after telling him to come back later, the kid left.

"So you're Blue?" I asked him. He responded that he was, and that I was becoming a nuisance, and he was glad I was here, as he would deal with me himself. He lunged at me like he wanted to choke me. I'm not much of a fighter, but I started swinging at him. I didn't connect once, and he touched my shoulder, causing me pain.

I started to panic; whoever Blue is, he's been spying on CHESS, and no one knows about it. If I die now, the leak will never be plugged. Remembering how guys like this used to pick on me when I was in high school, I started swinging again, fueled by anger. I missed the first two times, but the other two connected. Blue's face stretched out; he was in astral form, while my body was fully in this plane.

Blue panicked, and started to flee. I chased him, but I collided with one of those snake like creatures. My mind exploded, and I realized these beings were astral projections from Nexus, the master telepath of CHESS.

I started communicating with him, and let him know what was going on. While I was doing so, Blue got away, but Nexus sent out more probes to try and find him. At the same time, he linked me with The Octopus.

I shared my knowledge with him, so that he could recreate my phase modulator, and bring me back to the material world. It took him about a week, during which I was accosted sometimes by various creatures (Nexus told me they're what we consider poltergeists in the material world)

After Octopus completed the device, I prepared to go home. He activated it, and I felt incredible pain, and felt like I was on fire. I blacked out....

And woke up two weeks later in the medical center at Black Mesa. The doctors tell me I've been burned over 90% of my body when I rematerialized. I'm in pretty bad shape, but The Octopus found a way for me to use my armor to move around. I'm now linked to the armor's life support unit; without it, I will die.

As much as that news is bad, there was some good news: CHESS believes that Blue is the Blue Blood, leader of The Octagon. A major leak has been plugged, and Nexus is prepared in case he tries to infiltrate Black Mesa. They also think he's actually someone within CHESS.

Malcolm was brought in; turns out he's autistic, which explains why he seemed so naive. I hope I can build a device to let me communicate with him in his astral state; the kid needs guidance.

I have to call Carter; we've been out of touch for more than three weeks now, and we still need to deal with that undersea facility his father built.

When I first donned the armor, I had no idea the price I would pay for becoming a hero. Now I do. My body scarred, my very life dependent on the armor to stay alive. I've almost succumbed to the Humaru state once, and aliens want to destroy the planet, and wipe out humanity.

Tomorrow, I put the armor on again. It's what I do.

[New Journal entry]

For the past week, I've had nightmares. I keep seeing that gigantic entity, the one known as Cthulhu. It towers above the Hotel California, it's hand trying to force it's way through Magnum's magnetic force field.

I wake up, my heart racing, my burned flesh covered in sweat. It's still so raw in my mind, that we faced a being out of nightmares, and lived to tell about it.

I guess I should start from the beginning. Phillip Manning was hosting a part on The Hotel California, a massive, mobile deep sea oil drilling platform. Heads of states, celebrities, and numerous super heroes were invited to the inauguration of this vessel. I knew all about it thanks to Phillips son Carter, who had brought me proof that this ship was built using shoddy materials, and skirted numerous international laws. I had spoken with some of my team mates about it, and we were prepared to shut it down. Carter was with us, and he brought his Manta suit with him at my request. Thank god he did too, as you'll soon realize.

Phillip Manning put on one hell of a party. It was excessive in the extreme. He had Blackwater doing security. They claim to be a security firm, but their nothing more than high end mercenaries.

Carter tried to approach his father repeatedly, but was intercepted by Manning's goons at every turn. He was getting real frustrated, and started to lose his temper. The team was busy mingling, and the Mighty Seven, Manning's personal team of superhumans were there.

Most of what went on was pretty boring (other than Captain Atlas & Magnum having an arm wrestling contest) until Carter finally confronted his father. Sure enough, he made Carter look like an ass, which pissed him off. He took off for his room, so I had Omega tail him to be make sure he didn't do something stupid. While Omega was in the hallway, Carter put on his Manta suit, cut a hole in the wall, and went into the water. After reporting back to me, I got Modi & Magnum together, because I knew trouble was brewing...

[Journal entry continued]

While Modi, Magnum and I were trying to decide what to do about Carter, we overheard one of the Blackwater operatives communicating with someone. We heard something about grandpa's room being discovered, and that it was time to accelerate the agenda. We grabbed the guard and questioned him. At first he tried to play dumb, but after awhile, he start to giggle, and claimed we were all going to die tonight. We gagged and tied him up, and left him in a closet.

Modi and Magnum both go into the ocean to track Manta Man. With the comments made by the Blackwater goon, they decided to destroy the oil drill once it goes online. Carter went to find a way of disabling the engines.

Magnum also was able to detect hundreds of beings in the water. They come back up so we can figure out what to do. We try contacting Nemesis Kid, but he responded that he was busy "knocking boots". Modi pointed out that Nemesis is a geek, and no way would he act that way. We brought in Captain Atlas to warn him what was going on, but he seemed skeptical that Manning was doing something wrong.

At this point, Manning announced that "The Stars are Right!". As fireworks went off, the blackwater operatives start to take off their tuxedos, revealing black robes. They, and Manning, start to chant. It took a few moments, but I realized what was going on. Everyone, especially Captain Atlas, looked at me like I was crazy. Still, my team knew something was up, and prepared to deal with it. Atlas and I had some really heated words, something I came to regret later.

Deep Ones and Ithilids start rising out of the water, preparing to attack the civilians on the ship. Omega immediately starts to attack the Blackwater guards, who don't even try and defend themselves. Magnum flies at Manning, and stabs him through the shoulder with his blades, and sending him crashing into the bandstand area.

Modi smashes through the decks, and finds Nemesis. They find a mummified body of a near human like being, and determine it is the one messing with our communications. Modi smashes the mummy through a wall, which lets in more Deep Ones and Ithilids. He tries to use the mummy to block the hole, but the creatures pull it through, and down into the water.

With the mummy out of the picture, I finally reach Black Mesa. Gate starts preparing to port over, and I tell her to bring the Conch Horn of the Ancient Mariner (as it can control Deep Ones). Mannings wife, The Wonder, attacks Magnum. From what he told me later, she didn't seem herself, and was likely being manipulated like Manning was by the Mummy.

The other members of the Mighty Seven fight the Deep Ones/Ithilids, while I try and protect the civilians (as my light powers scare them, being undersea creatures). Gate finally ports in, and Magnum throws Manning through her gate, which makes The Wonder follow through. Civilians start pouring into the gate; at least some will be saved if things go badly.

Magnum creates a magnetic force field around the deck of the Hotel California, and The Magnet reinforces it with his own magnetic powers. This keeps most of the creatures off the deck, allowing us to fight the ones that were all ready on the deck without being overwhelmed.

Things started going our way, when the ocean started churning. A gigantic being burst free from the ocean, and a being out of nightmares towered over the ship: Great Cthulhu, the Great Old One! It's might hand reached down, and connected with Magnum's force field as we all looked upon a cosmic horror beyond anything we had ever faced before....

[Journal continued...]

At Cthulhu started to press down on Magnum's magnetic shield, Modi activated the belt of strength he wears around his waist. He also went berserk (something I've only seen him do once before), and leapt at the Outer God. The Hotel California pitched, and came close to capsizing at the force of his leap! He started to batter at Cthulhu with his hammer, ignoring it's facial tentacles (which were trying to ensnare him). Captain Atlas and Magnum join him, and the three dish out damage that would destroy cities in seconds.

Cthulhu seems to shrug most of it off, and causes Modi a lot of damage. I'm worried he's going to die in his berserk state, so I try and blind it with my light blasts. It recoils at the light, but doesn't seem to be fully effected by it.

Omega and Kid Nemesis try and stem the tide of Deep Ones and Ithilids trying to enter the ship via the hull breach.

Cthulhu knocks Modi off it's body, and he crashes through the ship, and lands in the reactor core! Thankfully Carter showed some initiative, and shut it off. If he hadn't done that, the ship would have gone off like a nuke, and I wouldn't be writing this now.

Magnum and Atlas continue to batter at the Outer God, but it keeps on coming. Remembering the stories I had read, I know it's body had been trapped by something called an Elder sign. I contact Magnum, who flies into the water to try and locate it. Carter joins him, as his sonar would be useful down there.

Realizing how desperate the situation is, Captain Atlas makes a decision I wish he hadn't. He lifts Cthulhu up, and flies upward, heading into space. Tapping into the Argus Array, I see him slam the Outer God into the surface of the moon, where parts of it's flesh flies off. Atlas then lifts it up again, and starts to fly off into space. As he does, small winged beings materialize, and separate them, and take both off into the stars.

Modi collapsed, and Magnum had to do an emergency surgery on him to save his life. He's still in a coma right now.

Because so many people were at the gala (especially leaders of other nations), CHESS couldn't contain this from getting out. Now the world press covered Cthulhu's rising, and mankind is in a general state of fear as they realize aliens do exist, and they are out to get us.

Phillip Manning is in a coma as well. The cultists have confirmed he was under the control of Qam, the mummified being Nemesis and Omega fought. He's now somewhere down in the depths of the ocean, with the Deep Ones and Ithillids as company.

I'm starting to wonder if Qam's control over Phillip is tied into my dad's disappearance. Manning's really bizarre behavior started around the time Qam took control of him, and my dad went missing weeks later. I'm starting to fear the worst, that he might actually  be dead. Until Manning wakes up, I have to wait before I can ask him about it.

I feel guilty about the things I said to Captain Atlas. In the end, he proved to be the real hero, saving us all from Cthulhu's physical form. What took him, where he was taken, and what those beings are doing to him, no one knows. If not for the threat of the Moevians with their sun killers, we'd be going after Atlas right now. If it's the last thing I do, I'm going to find him after we stop the Moevian threat. That is, if I live that long.

I saw Modi in the hospital ward. He doesn't look good. I couldn't stand seeing him like that, so I went back to my lab, and tried to work on my armor. I couldn't concentrate, so I went to my new quarters, and drank some mead he gave me.

With Atlas gone and Modi incapacitated, can we still hold off the Moevians?

[New Journal Entry]

It's been a week or so since the battle with Cthulhu. Modi is still in intensive care. I've been called in by Marshal Strong to accompany him, Agent Omega and Scion to the moon. We're using the moonbase as a staging area to hit one of the Moevian sun killers, while the members of the Top Five each take on the other five ships.

Gates brought us to the Chess space station, then ported us to the moonbase. Since we had some time, I tinkered with my armor in the workshop there, and upgraded it to include my Phase Analyzer. We got an emergency warning before I could start on incorporating the compensator.

We went to the hanger area, and were informed that there were objects incoming. Next thing we know, some insect/reptillian looking being ported in. Strong attacked it, and I flew above it, and took it out with two laser blasts. Next thing I know, more beings ported in. Turns out the Moevians tried to make a pre-emptive strike on our mission!

Some Moevian with rapier like weapons attacked Scion, and cut her eyelids. She returned the favor by running him through with her own blades. So much for the so-called Poet!

2 more Moevian males, 2 females, and 2 energy like being sported in. A muscular looking Moevian (whose name I learned was Archon) attacked me. A super strong type, and fucking arrogant too. He started the same crap about staring into the heart of suns Annihilator did when I tried to both blind and blast him.

Strong used the synaptic weapon on the galaxy looking being, and it froze in place. Omega took out one of the females, but the other one started using gravity powers on us, while the other energy being went after Scion. I tried to blast it, but the lasers went right through! If only I had the Compensator on line, I'd have nailed it. This gangly looking Moevian hung back, doing nothing.

Scion got away from the other energy being, and went after the woman with gravity powers. After her attack, the woman was a bloody smear on the wall, and Archon went nuts, and pummeled Scion through the floor onto the lunar surface! He started to choke her, so Strong leapt down to assist her. Omega and I tried to deal with the gangly dude, who turned out to be able to teleport others. He sent me above Bavaria, Germany, then sent Omega to Alaska.

Scion was able to use her blades to break the chokehold, then flew up out of the crater. Strong continued to fight Archon, while Omega and I tried to coordinate with Gates to get us back to the moonbase.

Scion attacked the teleporter, and did get in some licks, but he teleported a rock inside her, taking her out of the fight. Strong literally knocked Archon's head off with a strike, so the teleporter teleported all of them (living and dead) away.

Strong had to do emergency surgery on Scion, but was able to remove the rock with little trouble.

Truth be told, we had our asses handed to us. First thing I did was go back to the workship, fix my armor, and add in the Phase Compensator to it. I also boosted my laser output, so it does more damage. I can't wait to run into that weird energy being again, and seeing if the compensator will allow me to blast it this time.

Oh, almost forgot! Some British dude kept calling Strong during the fight. During Scion's surgery, he called back, and told Strong he had something for him. Strong went to Britain, and came back with some kind of staff/wand device. He said it's linked to our sun, and is very powerful. He told us the staff warned him the sun is going to die in 24 hours. So now we have a day to stop the Moevians from making the sun go Nova, and wiping out the entire solar system.....

I'm not sure that would have helped. 2 of the Moevians were non-corporeal, so they were hard to hit (though one was affected by a synaptic weapon). The skinny guy could attack with teleporation, and took me and Jimmy out of the fight for awhile. That was pretty hard to beat. He was faster than Kid Nemesis

After Scion took out the woman with the Gravity powers, it got a little easier. Archon went after her, then Strong took him out. Those were two of the tough ones physically. Hopefully with my armor upgrades, I can affect the other two beings now. Time will tell

Yeah, I need to update this, as it has been a long time. Not too much though, as there was just the battle with the sun killers, then his short astral encounter with a Slaad then the being bringing him back

Edit: And for those who didn't see it in the other thread, here is what will hopefully be the Glare 2.0 armor:

I got a new commission of Glare from another artists, and wanted to share it with everyone. The artist goes by the name Celtic Bolt, and I found him via DeviantArt. His page there can be found here. Hope you all like it!

I bumped up Glaring Commentary. It was there but a few pages back since Gerry had not updated it in quite some time.

Now I am totally diggin the New Glare Threads!!!

He's looking mighty Buff.

Just curious how he is using the armor without a body....... Smiley

I went back like 5 or 6 pages; guess I should have gone back more  Embarrassed

This will be the new set of armor he builds after coming back from his current jaunt in the Astral Plane...

I guess the search feature doesn't work all that great lol.

Sorry Gerry, I should have scrolled through like Oni did.

Don't feel bad Paul. I scrolled back about 5 or 6 pages, and didn't see it. It was after not finding it via search that I made the assumption it was gone. Totally my fault; I should had PM'd you first. But of course, Oni, being the most dedicated of us, found it.

Gerry,

Did you ever make GLARE stand for something? I mean the Armor, not the character. We all know He stands for Truth, Justice and Pizza.

By the way. I would think at 15th level and Heightened attack he is the most powerful of the Supers right now or at least one of them. That is if he gets a solid body and remakes his Armor.

I never considered an acronym for Glare. I just gave him that name because he had light powers.

I don't think he's one of the most powerful. Marshal Strong and Modi can dish out far more damage than he can (and I suspect Scion can as well). Sure, he's up there now that Magnum, Dark Warrior and Elusion are all dead.

However, I've tended to focus more on diversifying his powers. So he can do thinks like access Seer's nanonet around the planet, as well as the Argus Array. He has a HUD communicator, and can tap into normal satellite imaging. With his Illusion Type A, he can make visual 3D images from any of those to show his team mates (besides using it to create images of various things in the visual spectrum).

And of course, thanks to his dimensional physics knowledge, he is able to detect what frequency immaterial beings are at, and then blast them thanks to the Phase Analyzer/Compensator he built (and he has a power stunt that lets him phase into the Astral Plane, but not his armor currently; I need to invent that!)

I'm actually starting to think the name Glare no longer fits, as he's so much more than he started out as. I'll keep the name for now, but if he survives awhile longer, I suspect a name change will be in order one day.

Marshal strong has no Star Rod and going through other issues. Heck, He's not even on Earth at the moment. Modi is in a Coma at the moment.

Glare of course is also screwed with no body of course but I think he is right up there with the Heavy Hitters once he is back.

Scion is tough and Star Tide is probably the most powerful of all.

I had forgotten about Star Tide, as it's been awhile since we've seen that character in the game. I still think Strong does more base damage with a gun or his fists than Glare does with his lasers.

And when Glare does get back, I plan on creating the 2.0 armor, which will include some improvements.
