Hey all! Kanonfodder and I just finished this one up. We did a few things a little differently, nothing insane - just a few touches here and there.

Hope you like it! Tell us what you think.

It's "Marie La Rouge" - just click on it and have fun.

How did you calculate her experience points?  The 13,381, I mean.  I'm just wondering in case I modified her level.

Looks like Red Fury the super-crook.

  • Both have Red/Rouge in the name.

  • Both have a high-powered cutlass.

  • Both have a flying pirate ship.

I definitely plan on borrowing this for my WWII campaign. I see the team running into an Atlantean high-tech ship of warrior women. Oh the agony the horror. LOL

Thank you.

I create my characters using a spreadsheet to do all the math and extract data from all the tables. I roll 1d10 for the character's level and put it in the "Level" block. The spreadsheet then selects a random number with the range of that level.

I just found "Red Fury" on the net. I'll admit that they are similar, but they don't look much alike Smiley  The similarity really is just a coincidence, I assure you. Red Fury has a much larger ship and her crew is all stinky guys. Marie has Pirate gals and an expensive Italian-made pleasure yacht with techno-wings   Wink

So, what do you all think of the "odd" format (listing all the training, EXP value and EXP points, etc...) Is it helpful or just distracting?

I have learned that the hardest part of writing for V&V is not all the math and coming up with new characters, and writing the whole adventure. The really (really, really, really, really) hard part is catching all the mistakes you guys find so easily!

DSUMNER, RANGER, and MAJESTIC - you are VERY welcome. Making Marie was a BLAST! (a frustrating blast, but a blast none the less).

Now... how do I top her?  Huh

Any chance you'd be willing to share that spreadsheet?  Years ago I was going to toy around with that in order to make the quick generation of villains possible, but just dont have the time.

If you are uncomfortable sharing I would completely understand.

I could make a really crude comment right now, but I'll restrain myself. I like the layout, as I enjoy seeing what other people can come up with, and wouldn't mind seeing it in the future.

1) Showing an NPC's exp points isn't necessary, 'cuz NPC levels are assigned by the GM.
2) Experience awards can be listed in a table for all NPCs at the end of each chapter (just like the adventure ALways Outnumbered)
3) Showing the training is fine, but it should probably be moved to the end of the character sheet.  Also, if a GM has to adjust the NPC's level, then the training list might become useless.

Speaking of experience award tables, it would kinda cool if the table accounted for the GM changing a NPC's level.

I didn't realize you were referring to a V&V character.  This is kind of related to the continuity problems that V&V has had in the past.  Contributors unfamiliar with existing product...

DN: Thank you for noticing this. To help the GM, I listed suggested Experience Point rewards for all of the opponents in the V&V adventures I wrote: Enter the Gene Pool; Escape from the Micro-Universe (including the bonus sequel Return to the Micro-Universe); and the solo adventures in Always Outnumbered.

The only classic-era adventure to list the Experience value for opponents was The Great Iridium Con. I remember liking the idea so much as a GM that I made sure to include a similar list when I submitted my manuscript for Enter the Gene Pool at the beginning of 2010.

so, how does this girl's mutant power work? +1 inventing point per level and +1% inventing roll per level?

Well...Normally a character gets INT/10 inventing points per EXP level, Marie gets (INT/10)+EXP level. For percent, a normal character gets INTx3%, Marie gets (INT/3%)+Exp Level %.

So, Marie has an INT of 36. She would normally get 3.6 inventing points at every time she levels up, but her mutant power adds on more Inventing point for each level of experience she has. When she reached level 4, she received 3.6 + 4 (or 7.6) inventing points. Her base inventing percent is 108 (36 x .03 = 108%) +4 for her exp level gives her an INV% of 112%. At level five she'll receive 8.6 inv points and have a 113% chance of inventing.

It should be noted that she burned up a lot of her inventing points on weapons, her boat (which does not count against her points as it is a power, but still...), clever clothing, and so forth. Also, some of her inventions were at first level, some at second, some at third, and some at fourth, so saying "At level four she would have 24.4 INV points, she has seven inventions listed, so she should have 17.4" does not work out correctly. In upcoming works, I list what invention was created at which level to help clarify this.

I also didn't change the INV% in her stats to reflect her heightened ability. I figured if I put 112% in there, too many guys would add her EXP level to that and come up with 116% - not that it really matters, it's still over 100%...

Also, her inventions may be up to 1/2 as powerful as true "powers", this is up from the VV2 rule book's 1/4 to 1/3.

To confirm that my spreadsheet has done everything correctly, I have a consolidated chart of all the basic stats and their Hit mods, Acc, dmg, Healing Factor, etc... I use that, and a solar calculator I bough in 1986 to confirm the math done in the spreadsheet. The characters are rolled on dice given to me by a friend in 1982. I have no idea how old my pencil is...

Oh... I only saved the spreadsheet to .XLS for convenience, most of my work is actually done in OpenOffice - free office suite www.openoffice.org

cripes. that seems a bit excessive. i mean, if her inventing is that high, why add to the percentage? also, her inventing point total is bad enough now, but think what happens when she, say, goes from 9th to 10th level and picks up like 13 inventing pts?

I know, I went over the top on her INV % and MAYBE her points, but... Even less intelligent characters can use the power.

This is one of those instances when you start with art and develop a character around it - then add more art, which required more powers...

Still, Marie and her crew are fun. Kinda like a cute Forge (from X-men).

Well, it's not like we're required to use her in a game, so I say what the heck, give her what you want. And we always modify if we think it's too much. Stats don't interest me nearly as much as a good motivation.

Smart characters rarely use up all of their Inventing Points anyway.  At least that's been my experience over the years.  So her having a bunch more doesn't seem very problematic to me (and is fine being as it fits the theme and concept of the character).

i guess so Kap, but stats are also an important part of gaming. especially a villain supplement. It is a handy idea for the power, of course, I think the actual game mechanic to represent it may need balancing to prevent abuse if used for a PC etc

It is, a "Mutant Power" (not a "NEW POWER") and may work differently for other characters (as the GM sees fit). For me, Most Wanteds (and Great Bridges) don't really present characters that "You can use in your campaign". They have always been more of a "Here's what you can do with the system" sort of thing.

She's an NPC, so her inventing is up to the GM. If a Player made a similar PC, the GM would have to find a way to balance her out. V&V will not work wth out a good GM...

What I do find odd is that there has been much more forum traffic for this on free character than for any of the other 30-something characters I have made for V&V...

simple: free villains get your work out where EVERYONE can see it immediately and provide immediate feedback, just like we would for a character anyone else posted. Im not downing your work, Im examining it and attempting to give constructive feedback. I dig what you are doing with her Mutant power, I was just wondering if there were a simpler way of accomplishing the same thing. maybe an extra (level/2) Inventing points each level? Or even have her actual Intelligence increase by 1pt per level as part of the Mutant Power. Thatll keep her Inventing% and Inventing Points on the rise (HP too) even if she "Trains" in something else. or if she trains her Intelligence as well, thatll add up quickly... but not to the equivalent of 3 powers worth of inventions each level.

I've always seen the "Most Wanted" type books of being a collection of villains that one could introduce right into their campaigns.  Of course GMs can modify or change any of them to suit their tastes, but it's nice to have characters that are already made up, especially when one is pressed for time.

I'm with you.

Frankly I think most NPCs don't even need stats if the GM is really on the ball.

I can go with that too. Just Powers, Power, and HP are all a GM really needs. Bad guys fail or make saves depending on drama or game flow. I can also see Majestic's point. It is nice to have a Villain to just grab and drop.

Basically - as long as we're all having fun, it's all good!

Great stuff!  (and nice artwork additions, too).

One thing that could potentially be added to the last entry (for Willpower) would be Scorpio's ability to resist poisons (from Signs of the Zodiac).

I just got done playing that module, and at the climax of the adventure the only standing PC made his first attack (ever) with Poison/Venom, and she laughed in his face (he was quite disillusioned with his power, since this was - at the time - the only time he'd used it!)  Grin
